2025 NFL Draft: Falcons giving up 2026 1st-round pick for James Pearce Jr. draws criticism
The Atlanta Falcons traded back into the first round for the Los Angeles Rams' pick at No. 26 and selected Tennessee edge rusher James Pearce Jr.
Yet the Falcons trading this year's second-round pick (No. 46), a seventh-rounder (No. 242) and a 2026 first-round selection to draft a player that was rated No. 37 on Yahoo Sports' consensus big board was immediately questioned. Atlanta had already drafted another edge rusher, Georgia linebacker Jalon Walker (No. 13 on the big board), with the No. 15 pick.
"To give them a first-round pick, that's ridiculous. That's stupid," Charles McDonald said on Yahoo Sports' NFL Draft Live show. "This is what the Falcons do."
Pearce compiled 7.5 sacks last season for the Volunteers with 13 tackles for loss. During his three years in Knoxville, he collected 19.5 sacks, 30 tackles for loss and 71 total tackles.
"There shouldn't be an eagerness to get rid of a future pick, a first-rounder that no matter what is going to be more valuable," added Yahoo Sports' Nate Tice. "It's just not the class to be jumping back in to get an edge rusher with questions."
Those questions were raised in Tice's pre-draft scouting report on Pearce.
"Pearce's frame and speed-only type style gives me some apprehension about how he will affect the game if he doesn't win right away, as he's not the most explosive or strongest player. This type of pass rusher profile carries risk."
The Falcons finished second-to-last in the NFL with 31 sacks. Arnold Ebiketie led the team with six sacks, followed by Matt Judon's 5.5 and five from Kaden Elliss. Atlanta's defense also allowed 4,004 yards and 34 touchdowns passing.
Pass rush was certainly a need for the team. But was Pearce worth giving up next year's first-round pick? Many draft experts and observers on social media didn't think so.
Falcons give up their #1 pick in '26... for James Pearce I've received nearly a dozen texts from guys around the league who are.... shocked

I can't believe the Falcons traded all that for James PearceWhat @DOrlandoAJC

Here's what I'm told about James Pearce Jr: 'He's exactly what Jeff Ulbrich wants in a rusher. Tall, long, explosive, fast. He will thrive in that defense.' #Falcons

The Falcons obviously had Pearce rated above other edge rushers like Mike Green and Donovan Ezeiruaku, both of whom were higher on Yahoo Sports' rankings. Atlanta also clearly felt that they would not be able to get an edge rusher at No. 46, 14 picks into the second round.
It's a decision that will be called into question next April — especially if that pick could have been used to add some help while the pass rush wasn't improved.

Former USC star pitcher Caden Aoki commits to Georgia
Former USC star pitcher Caden Aoki commits to Georgia Last week, USC baseball ace Caden Aoki made headlines when he surprisingly announced his intention to enter the transfer portal. On Monday, Aoki made his new home official: He will play for the Georgia Bulldogs in 2026. After spending his freshman year at Notre Dame in 2022, Aoki transferred to USC prior to the 2023 season. He emerged as the Trojans' top starting pitcher over the better part of the past three seasons. In 2025, he went 6-4 with a 3.99 ERA. However, it was the NCAA Tournament where Aoki forever etched himself into Trojans lore. In USC's tournament opener against TCU, Aoki allowed just one run over eight innings, throwing 114 pitches. For his performance, he was named to the all-Corvallis Regional team. Despite being a senior this past season, Aoki was granted an additional year of eligibility by the NCAA. However, it appears he will spend that year in Athens, Georgia, rather than in Los Angeles. USC's lacked significant pitching depth behind Aoki in 2025. The Trojans will need to improve on that front next year if they want to have any chance of making it further in the postseason.

Minnesota Frost lose 2 forwards in PWHL expansion draft
The back-to-back PWHL champion Minnesota Frost lost two players in Monday night's expansion draft, during which the league's two newest teams filled out their rosters. The Frost lost Brooke McQuigge and Denisa Krizova to Vancouver. The expansion team also added two former Frost players during the exclusive signing window: defenders Sophie Jaques and Claire Thompson. The Frost were allowed to protect four players from the expansion teams, choosing forwards Kendall Coyne Schofield, Taylor Heise, Britta Curl-Salemme and defender Lee Stecklein. Jaques and Thompson were the bigger losses for the Frost — they had the second- and fourth-most points on the team last season. McQuigge was tied with Curl-Salemme for fifth-most and Krizova had the eighth-most. Coyne Schofield was first and Heise was tied with Jaques. The Frost are the only champions in PWHL history, having won the Walter Cup in each of the nascent league's first two seasons. With Seattle and Vancouver joining, the PWHL now has eight teams.
