What do Pacers, Thunder have in common? Trading Paul George helped build their rosters
Who is most responsible for the Indiana Pacers and Oklahoma City Thunder reaching the 2025 NBA Finals?
There are All-Star and All-NBA players, of course. Tyrese Haliburton and Pascal Siakam are the Pacers' anchors, while the Thunder have league MVP Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Jaylen Williams.
Coaches Rick Carlisle of Indiana and Mark Daignault of OKC have made the right moves, as have roster builders Kevin Pritchard of the Pacers and Sam Presti of the Thunder.
But both teams owe a sliver of thanks to the same person: Paul George. The 35-year-old nine-time All-Star helped both franchises — by being traded away.
"I don't mean this facetiously or in a mean way: A very large part of Paul George's NBA legacy is going to be all the great teams that were created in his wake," NBA reporter Zach Lowe said this week on Bill Simmons' podcast.
The Pacers selected George 10th overall in the 2010 NBA Draft. He became a full-time starter in his second season, and earned Most Improved Player honors in his third. He made the All-Star team four times in Indiana, was voted third-team All-NBA three times and earned All-Defense honors three times.
Indiana traded him to the Thunder in 2017, getting Victor Oladipo and Domantas Sabonis in return.
The Pacers sent Sabonis to the Sacramento Kings on Feb. 8, 2022, and the key piece coming to Indiana was Tyrese Haliburton, who has two All-Star nods and two third-team All-NBA teams since. He has often been spectacular in these playoffs.
Also, draft picks that became Andrew Nembhard (31st overall, 2022) and Ben Sheppard (26th overall, 2023) came to the Pacers in deals related to Indiana's 2021 trade of Oladipo to the Houston Rockets.
George played two seasons in Oklahoma City, making the All-Star team both years, All-NBA third team in his first and All-NBA first team in his second.
In the summer of 2019, OKC sent George to the Los Angeles Clippers for a two-player, seven-draft pick package that included Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, who had just finished his rookie season. One of those draft picks, a 2022 first-rounder, yielded Jalen Williams.
SGA has led the Thunder for six years, earning All-Star berths and first-team All-NBA honors the past three. In 2024-25, he led the league in field-goal attempts (21.8), made free throws (7.9) and points (32.7) per game and was named league MVP.
In his third season, Williams was an All-Star and third-team All-NBA selection, averaging 21.6 points, 5.3 rebounds and 5.1 assists per game.
Little-used Dillon Jones also came in the George deal, along with two 2025 first-round picks and a 2026 first rounder.
The nod goes to OKC. The Thunder's move brought in their best player directly, and one indirectly with a draft pick. The Pacers needed more moves post-George to complete their Finals roster.

2025 NBA Finals: Philadelphia 76ers connections in Pacers vs. Thunder
The 2025 NBA Finals will get underway on Thursday from the Paycom Center as the Eastern Conference champion Indiana Pacers will take on the Western Conference champion Oklahoma City Thunder. The winner of these finals will win their first title in franchise history. The Thunder moved to Oklahoma City in 2008 after so many years in Seattle as the SuperSonics. The franchise won a title in Seattle in 1979, but the Thunder does not acknowledge that title as they left the history behind in Seattle. Advertisement The Philadelphia 76ers had a tough 2024-25 season as they were decimated by injuries from the jump, but there are some Sixers connections in these finals on both teams. The Pacers feature former Process champion TJ McConnell as their backup point guard and they also feature big man Tony Bradley. McConnell was an undrafted rookie who played four seasons for the Sixers while Bradley played one season for Philadelphia and has been able to establish himself as a tough and physical big man option for coach Rick Carlisle to turn to. On the Thunder side of things, they feature Philadelphia's 2020 second-round pick, Isaiah Joe. After two seasons with the Sixers, Joe was waived before catching on with the Thunder. Since then, he has morphed into a reliable role player for coach Mark Daigneault as he has shot 41.2% from deep in three seasons in Oklahoma City. Draymond Green Makes Tyrese Haliburton Statement Before NBA Finals
Draymond Green Makes Tyrese Haliburton Statement Before NBA Finals originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Indiana Pacers are going to the NBA Finals for the first time since 2000 after defeating the New York Knicks in a tough-fought Eastern Conference Finals. Advertisement There, they'll face off against the league's Most Valuable Player, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, and the Oklahoma City Thunder. The Thunder made relatively light work of the Minnesota Timberwolves, defeating them 4-1 in the Western Conference Finals. For the Thunder, it's their first trip to the NBA Finals since 2012, when they fell to the LeBron James-led Miami Heat. Golden State Warriors forward Draymond Green© Cary Edmondson-Imagn Images Draymond Green makes Tyrese Haliburton statement before NBA Finals The Golden State Warriors had NBA Finals aspirations, but an injury to Stephen Curry in Game 1 of the Western Conference semifinals against the Minnesota Timberwolves derailed them. Advertisement The Warriors had been playing do-or-die basketball essentially since they traded for Jimmy Butler. The quick turnaround from their series with the Houston Rockets to the Western Conference semifinals could be to blame. With the Warriors eliminated, Draymond Green has been watching Tyrese Haliburton and the Pacers and has been impressed with what he's seen. "They give him so much space... They don't realize he's surgical with it," Green said. "Hali's handle is very underrated and sneaky." While Pascal Siakam took home the Larry Bird Trophy for the Eastern Conference Finals MVP, Haliburton has been an integral part of what the Pacers have accomplished in these playoffs. Advertisement During the Conference Finals, Haliburton was second in points and first in rebounds, assists, steals and 3-pointers made. The Pacers will face their toughest opponent yet, as the Thunder finished with the best record in the NBA during the regular season and has coasted in these playoffs outside of their semifinals series against the Denver Nuggets. Oklahoma City is the overwhelming favorite at -700, which is an implied probability of 87.5%. The Pacers are accustomed to being underdogs, having faced off against the Cleveland Cavaliers and New York Knicks in their recent series. Trial for Tampa Bay Rays shortstop Wander Franco begins in Dominican Republic
PUERTO PLATA, Dominican Republic (AP) — The trial of Tampa Bay Rays shortstop Wander Franco started Monday in the Dominican Republic in a sexual abuse case involving a 14-year-old girl. Franco told judges he wants justice to be done. Franco has been charged in the northern province of Puerto Plata with sexually abusing a minor, sexual and commercial exploitation against a minor, and human trafficking. Prosecutors introduced documents as pieces of evidence against the 24-year-old Franco during the first hearing, and added they will call at least seven witnesses in a trial that is expected to proceed on Thursday, Friday and next Monday. Franco heard the charges against him and could be sentenced to up to 30 years in jail. 'I heard all they said, but I wanted to say that justice must be done,' Franco told the judges. Irina Ventura, one of Franco's attorneys, said part of the evidence against her client is fraudulent and illegal. Teodosio Jaquez, another member of the player's legal team, said that the underage girl denied having sexual relations with the player. Prosecutor Claudio Cordero said all the evidence 'was obtained in a lawful manner, are self-sufficient and will lead to a conviction, which is sought by the prosecutor's office.' Franco was having an All-Star season in 2023 before Dominican authorities began investigating allegations he had been in a relationship with a minor and paid her mother thousands of dollars for her consent. The trial was initially scheduled for Dec. 12, but was postponed until June. The trial could take up to eight months to conclude, based on the average duration of trials in the Dominican Republic. ___ AP MLB:
