Maha Vir Chakra awardee's kin present his medals to Garhwal Rifles Regiment

Indian Express2 days ago
In a solemn ceremony to commemorate the 60th death anniversary of Captain Chander Narain Singh who had laid down his life during the India Pakistan War of 1965, the officer's family presented his medals to the Garhwal Rifles Regiment as a tribute to his legacy.
Sukhdev Singh, brother of the late officer, handed over the Maha Vir Chakra (MVC) and other service medals to Lieutenant General DS Rana, Commander-in-Chief, Andaman and Nicobar Command (CINCAN), who received them on behalf of the Regiment.
Lt Gen DS Rana paid tributes to Captain Singh, describing him as a true symbol of bravery, leadership and patriotism. He expressed deep gratitude to the family for entrusting the Regiment with his medals and affirmed that the legacy of the officer would continue to inspire future generations of Indian soldiers.
Captain Singh was posthumously awarded the Maha Vir Chakra, India's second-highest wartime gallantry award, for his exceptional bravery and leadership during the India Pakistan War of 1965. Born on July 7, 1939 in Shikarpur, Garhwal (Uttar Pradesh), he was attached to Headquarters 120 Infantry Brigade when, on August 5, 1965, reports emerged of over 100 Pakistani infiltrators in the Brigade's Area of Responsibility.
Tasked with verifying the threat, he led a patrol to a high-altitude region comprising Chhu-i-Nar and Op Hill features. While flushing the area, his team came under heavy enemy fire and grenade attacks. Undeterred and despite being outnumbered, he chose to launch a night assault, during which his small team neutralised six enemy soldiers and injured several others, forcing the rest to retreat. Even after being hit in the head by enemy fire during a counterattack, Captain Singh continued to lead and refused evacuation, ultimately laying down his life in the line of duty.
The medals presented by the family members of the Braveheart will be preserved and displayed at the Garhwal Rifles Regimental Centre Museum in Lansdowne, Uttarakhand.

SC stays HC order asking rape accused's wife living in US to remain in India

The top court further directed the man to deposit Rs 2 lakh as surety for foreign travel. A bench of Justices Sanjay Kumar and Satish Chandra Sharma issued notice to the Rajasthan government in the matter on the appeal filed by a software engineer, accused of raping a woman on the promise of marriage. New Delhi, Aug 8 (PTI) The Supreme Court on Friday stayed an order asking a rape accused's wife, employed in the US, to remain in India as a 'collateral' if he wished to travel abroad for a job. Advocate Ashwani Dubey, appearing for the engineer, submitted that the wife was neither an accused nor a party to the case. He said no notice was issued by the Rajasthan High Court and yet it passed an order restraining the petitioner. 'The wife, who is neither accused nor heard, is restrained from travelling abroad, purely to offset a hypothetical apprehension that the husband will abscond,' Dubey argued. The plea said the high court, in a clear violation of the 'procedural impropriety' and without hearing or impleading his wife, who is currently employed in the US, and ignoring the fact that she was not a part of the criminal case, directed her to remain in India. It was further argued that the high court direction was 'erroneous' and violative of the fundamental rights under Article 21 of the Constitution. The direction was stated to suffer from procedural irregularity and legal perversity, having been passed without affording a hearing to the person affected. 'The petitioner is an Indian passport holder and an Indian citizen and not the citizen of any other country and he will be under the control of Consulate General at USA and there are no chances of his absconding as he is willing to go abroad to earn his livelihood on work visa and therefore, there is no question of his absconding,' the plea said. The bench was informed that the petitioner would travel for a specific period and ready to state on oath that he would be available for trial as and when directed. 'There is no question of delay in trial and also there is no question of his absconding,' the plea added. The man was booked on rape charges by the Christianganj Police Station in Ajmer after it was alleged that he met a woman on a matrimonial website and maintained a close acquaintance with her for four years on the promise of marriage. Section 69 of BNS deals with the offence of 'sexual intercourse by employing deceitful means, etc.', and defines deceitful means to include 'false promise of employment or promotion, inducement or marring after suppressing identity'. Apprehending arrest, he moved an anticipatory bail application, which was allowed. He then moved an application before the trial court to allow him to go abroad for a job. The trial court dismissed his plea following which he challenged it before the high court. The high court allowed him to go abroad but imposed a condition that his wife must remain in India. Kapil Sharma's Surrey cafe shot at for 2nd time in a month; staff left shaken

Toronto: As a cafe owned by Indian comedian Kapil Sharma was targeted by unknown persons in Canada, for the second time within a month, police said the episode had left staff shaken and created a sense of anxiety among other businesses and residents in the area. Kap's Cafe in Surrey, British Columbia, which was fired at by unknown persons in the early hours of Thursday. (Sameer Kaushal/NewsDerby) Around 4.40 am, on Thursday, Surrey Police Service (SPS) officers responded to a report of 'shots fired' at Kaps Cafe. 'Numerous SPS police resources and Delta Police Department units responded and while it appears multiple shots caused damage to the windows and building, fortunately the staff on premises were uninjured,' a release stated. However, SPS spokesperson Staff Sgt Lindsey Houghton told local media later in the day that staff inside the cafe were 'quite understandably shaken' by the incidents, which create a 'significant amount of anxiety' for other businesses in the area and residents of apartments on the upper floors of the building, according to the outlet Vancouver Sun. Houghton also said that what appeared to a Molotov cocktail, an incendiary device, was found at the scene. Surrey Police Service Frontline Investigative Support Team has assumed conduct of the investigation. The Cafe had reopened after closing briefly after multiple shots were fired at it on July 10, soon after it commenced operations. The shootings occurred in what is largely a residential locality and in fact, there are apartments in the complex where the café is situated. SPS officers reported to the scene at 1:50 am after there were reports of shots fired there. Delta Police Department officers also responded. Videos of the shootings have circulated online along with claims for the attacks, though none of them can be verified. But businesses in the Lower Mainland region of British Columbia, where the Café is located, have been targeted several times allegedly with the purpose of extortion. On June 11, businessman Satwinder Sharma was shot dead in neighbouring Abbotsford. Meanwhile, Satish Kumar, president of the Lakshmi Narayan Mandir in Surrey, has experienced his businesses being targeted multiple times this year. Kumar told the outlet Vancouver Sun last month, 'My life is on the line. My family's life is on the line.' In December 2023, the residence where his son and family live in was fired upon.
