Ee Wei says she's starting to click again with Tang Jie
KUALA LUMPUR: National mixed doubles shuttler Toh Ee Wei says she is finding her rhythm again with partner Chen Tang Jie after they were reunited in April.
However, she said there was still a lot of work to be done before she and Tang Jie could restore their performance to its previous peak.
"At the Singapore Open, we didn't perform well. But we tried to get our focus back at the Indonesia Open, and we entered the semi-finals," said Ee Wei after a training session at Academy Badminton Malaysia (ABM) here today (June 13).
"I think we are slowly regaining our form. There is more to improve and we need to keep training hard."
In March, the Badminton Association of Malaysia announced that the world number four pair would be split to allow the coach to try new combinations following tension in their partnership.
However, Tang Jie and Ee Wei were reunited at the recent Sudirman Cup and helped Malaysia reach the quarter-finals. - Bernama

Arif battles fever and flu before big stage in Paris
PETALING JAYA: Men's doubles shuttler Wan Arif Wan Junaidi has been dealt a scare before the World Championships after coming down with fever and flu. Arif is preparing to make his debut with Yap Roy King in the world meet which starts next Monday in Paris. Men's doubles coach Herry Iman Pierngadi said that the 23-year-old fell sick on Monday and could not train. 'Arif was down with fever and flu on Monday and could not train. He has returned to training today (Tuesday) but has still not fully recovered yet,' said Herry after overseeing the training session at the Academy Badminton Malaysia (ABM) in Bukit Kiara yesterday. 'He could not take part in one of the three sessions that I had planned. He could participate in the other two sessions. I am a bit worried as the world meet is quite close. 'I will keep monitoring his physical condition. Hopefully, he can return to his normal self quickly.' Arif and Roy King are scheduled to leave for Paris on Thursday (Aug 21) with the rest of the team. The pair, who are currently ranked No. 22 in the world, are hoping to impress in the prestigious meet. Roy King-Arif have been boosted by their maiden World Tour title win in the Macau Open earlier this month. The duo will open their campaign in Paris against Japan's world No. 34 Kenya Mitsuhashi-Hiroki Okamura. A tough test against Thailand's world No. 12 Dechapol Puavaranukroh-Kittinupong Kedren awaits them in the second round if Roy King-Arif get past the Japanese pair. Meanwhile, Malaysia will also be represented in the men's doubles by world No. 2 Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik, world No. 3 Goh Sze Fei-Nur Izzuddin Rumsani and Man Wei Chong-Tee Kai Wun (No. 7).

Top form: Man Wei Chong-Tee Kai Wun captured their maiden World Tour title in Macau earlier this month. PETALING JAYA: Men's doubles coach Herry Iman Pierngadi's experience could prove crucial to Malaysia's hopes of clinching gold in the World Championships which starts next Monday in Paris. In just seven months, Herry has superbly turned around the fortunes of the men's doubles shuttlers under him. Overall, Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik, Man Wei Chong-Tee Kai Wun and Yap Roy King-Wan Arif Wan Junaidi have won five titles among them since the Indonesian replaced Tan Bin Shen as the men's doubles coach in the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) in February. World No. 2 Aaron-Wooi Yik have been the biggest winners after triumphing in the Asian Championships, Singapore Open and Thailand Open and also finished runners-up in the Malaysian Masters and China Open. World No. 7 Wei Chong-Kai Wun impressively beat Aaron-Wooi Yik in the final in the home event while world No. 22 Roy King-Arif captured their maiden World Tour title in the Macau Open earlier this month. Can Herry guide one of the pairs to the coveted world title next? The Indonesian has produced world champions before when he was coaching in his homeland, most famously guiding Mohd Ahsan-Hendra Setiawan to three titles in 2013, 2015 and 2019. Herry is now looking to use his experience to guide one of Aaron-Wooi Yik, Wei Chong-Kai Wun or Roy King-Arif to the crown. The 62-year-old said that small details could prove the difference between victory and defeat in Paris. 'In the world meet, there is very little separating the top men's pairs. 'I've been using video analysis to see the strengths and weaknesses of our opponents. 'It's important to analyse all our opponents' latest matches as pairs always can train and come up with new strategies. 'I've also been having discussions with our pairs and tweaking their strategies to help them gain an edge over rivals.' Malaysia have won the world title only once so far when Aaron-Wooi Yik memorably ended the country's long wait in 2022 in Tokyo. The pair will again be Malaysia's best bet for the gold. Aaron-Wooi Yik have received a bye in the first round and will open their campaign in the second round against either Scotland's Christopher Grimley-Mathew Grimley or Spain's Daniel Franco-Rodrigo Sanjurjo. A win could see Aaron-Wooi Yik play Roy King-Wan Arif Wan Junaidi in the third round. Roy King-Arif though need to overcome tricky pairs Kenya Mitsuhashi-Hiroki Okamura from Japan and Thailand's Dechapol Puavaranukroh-Kittinupong Kedren in the first and second rounds respectively if they hope to meet Aaron-Wooi Yik. Wei Chong-Kai Wun will likely face Popov brothers Christo and Toma Junior from France in the second round. Malaysia will also be represented by independent world No. 3 duo Goh Sze Fei-Nur Izzuddin Rumsani, who will will play the winners of the match between Thailand's Peeratchai Sukphun-Pakkapon Teeraratsakul and Americans Chen Zhi-yi-Presley Smith in the second round.

Malaysia's second keirin spot for SEA Games up for grabs at Track Asia Cup

A keirin spot at the SEA Games in December is at stake for the riders when they compete at the Track Asia Cup as national track cycling team head coach Harnizam Basri is selecting the second rider to race the keirin. Harnizam will pick the second rider for the SEA Games based on their performances at the Asia Cup. The squad will leave for the Asia Cup, which is a UCI ranked Class 1 event, on Monday. Mohd Shah Firdaus Sahrom and Nurul Izzah Izzati Mohd Asri, who are the only cyclists under the Road to Gold programme, will not be competing at the Asia Cup though. "We have decided not to send Shah and Izzah as we want them to focus on preparations for the World Championships in Santiago, Chile (Oct 22-26)," said Harnizam. "We will be sending Mohd Fadhil Zonis, Mohd Ridwan Sahrom and Akmal Jusena Nazimi for the Asia Cup. "They will compete in the men's team sprint, keirin as well as the individual sprint events. "We will be choosing the second rider for the SEA Games keirin based on their performances at the Asia Cup, so they will have to compete with each other for that slot. It has to be earned on merit. "For the women's team, we have selected Anis Amira Rosidi, Nurul Aliana Syafika Azizan and Nur Alyssa Mohd Farid and they will compete in the same events as the men's in Suphanburi. "We want to gauge our performances in both the men's and women's team sprint events, especially as our men's team will be competing in the team sprint event at the SEA Games. "It will also be Aliana's first international competition since coming back. She has been doing well in training," added Harnizam. Aliana spent months recovering after suffering a fractured rib and concussion after crashing in a local race in October last year. Shah Firdaus has also been on the comeback trail as he has been battling tendonitis in his right knee since February but has shown improvement in recent months. The men's keirin and men's team sprint are the only sprint discipline events that have been included for the Thailand SEA Games this year. Malaysia though are hopeful of dominating the track cycling events, which offers five gold medals.
