Stolen dog 'Uber' is found safe in Mamelodi

The Citizen06-05-2025
The six-year-old sable German Shepherd dog Uber was stolen along with his owner's Mazda double-cab bakkie from a parking lot in Monument Park Spar, Pretoria, on Sunday. Uber has been found safe and is reunited with his family.
The recovery occurred in Mamelodi during the afternoon of May 6, following an outpouring of support and coordinated search efforts by the community and the Soshanguve Animal Shelter.
Candice Palmer Beukes said one resident saw Uber in Mamelodi and called the dog's owner, John van Castricum.
'This gentleman called the owner of the dog, and the Soshanguve Animal Shelter was called. We gave the shelter all details about Uber, and they managed to help us locate Uber, with the help of the man who initially saw him,' said Beukes.
She said even though the bakkie was not recovered, Uber didn't sustain any visible injuries. Uber got his unique name because, as part of the breeder's naming convention, all puppies in his litter were given names starting with the letter 'U.'
Beukes added, 'From what we can tell, there's nothing wrong with the dog, but it will be taken to the vet on May 7 to be checked properly.'
Beukes said she wasn't sure if the resident who saw Uber was aware of the R10 000 reward put up by the then distraught 83-year-old Van Castricum, but will receive a token of appreciation. Others who helped would also be rewarded, according to Beukes.
'Uber is so excited to be reunited with its owner. He started to get excited and wanted to jump out of the bakkie on his way to reunite with his owner.'
She said Uber's owner, Van Castricum, is 'super grateful' for all the people involved in the recovery process.

Gareth Cliff speaks out on 'murdered' black farmer

Gareth Cliff has spoken out about Tshwane farmer Jerry Boshoga, who was kidnapped last year. This week, reports emerged that the businessman had been murdered, claims police have labelled 'misinformation'. Cliff's comments come weeks after he spoke to Piers Morgan on a panel discussion about allegations of 'white genocide' and concerns of farm murders in South Africa. He also addressed legislation he believes 'discriminates' against white South Africans. In an X post, Gareth Cliff reacted to a post about Tshwane farmer Jerry Boshoga. In allegations that authorities have since disputed, X user @Lebona_cabonena posted: 'Jerry Boshoga, a prominent farmer and businessman who went missing in November, has been found dead'. Cliff retweeted the post, adding: 'Tragic. Our government needs to take farm murders seriously.' Unbeknownst to Gareth Cliff, the South African police have cautioned South Africans about reposting 'fake news' about the farmer. It shared in a statement this week: 'Unverified social media accounts have shared misleading and false information claiming that Mr Boshoga has been found deceased. 'The SAPS can confirm that the investigation into his kidnapping is still at a very sensitive stage, and the businessman has not been found alive nor deceased. We therefore call on all social media users to STOP THE SPREAD OF UNVERIFIED INFORMATION'. According to the SABC, Tshwane farmer Jerry Boshoga was reportedly kidnapped on 18 November last year. After his disappearance, videos of the 46-year-old being gagged and tortured went viral. His alleged kidnappers initially demanded a ransom of R25 million, but reduced it to R10 million. In one distressing clip, Boshoga pleaded with his mother, 'Please pay, pay now so they can release me. It is too bad. I really need you, please, mother. Please come and pay. Please pay everything that they want. I am begging you …' Police have confirmed that the investigation into Boshoga's disappearance is active and 'sensitive'. Cullinan and Ekangala crime blitz leads to mass arrests, fines

Over 350 suspects were arrested for various crimes, including murder, attempted murder, rape and armed robbery during crime combating efforts. Led by Tshwane District Commissioner, Major-General Samuel Thine, the operation focused on tackling crime in the rural communities of Ekangala and Cullinan policing precincts on July 31. 'SAPS in Tshwane intensified its ongoing efforts to combat crime through the continued implementation of Operation Shanela,' he said. He said SAPS personnel from across the metro were deployed to enhance policing efforts. 'Key activities included continued liquor compliance inspections, the tracing of wanted suspects, and heightened patrols in identified crime hotspots,' he said. He said district detectives made significant progress in their tracing operations, resulting in the arrest of 318 wanted suspects. 'The arrested suspects include seven for murder, three for attempted murder, four for armed robbery and 10 for rape,' he said. He added that a roadblock was assembled in Ekangala, with tactical teams deployed in both precincts to increase police visibility. He stated that, 'This operation led to the detention of 30 illegal immigrants, who are currently being processed for court proceedings and possible deportation.' He said two individuals were fined for employing illegal immigrants. Van Dyk said during the operation, 1 265 individuals and 509 vehicles were searched, with 35 vehicles being tested to verify ownership. 'The operations resulted in the arrest of a total of 360 suspects for a range of criminal offences,' he said. Furthermore, he said patrols were conducted in 20 high-crime areas and premises with two second-hand dealers being inspected and fined for contravention of the Second-Hand Goods Act. 'Traffic officers provided valuable support by issuing 102 AARTO infringement notices amounting to R39 000 for various traffic-related offences.' He then said that, as part of liquor law enforcement, 10 liquor outlets were inspected, with five outlets that were shut down for non-compliance with the Liquor Act. 'Alcohol, three speakers and a fridge were confiscated,' he said. He concluded by saying the SAPS urges members of the public to remain vigilant and to report any suspicious activity by contacting Crime Stop on 08600 10111 or by using the My SAPS App. Do you have more information about the story?
