'Last year definitely was a huge learning experience,' he said.

This is Hamm's second time playing for a national title and he feels more prepared to compete this year.

Haley has preached playing with passion all season to keep his players at their best. He tells his team to 'play like kids' down the stretch of the season.
'We don't lose a lot because we know how to play the game together and for each other,' Hamm said.

Diamondbacks Post Message After Sudden Passing of Former Outfielder

Diamondbacks Post Message After Sudden Passing of Former Outfielder originally appeared on Athlon Sports. On May 20 it was reported by Newsweek that former MLB outfielder Jason Conti had passed away following a severe brain injury. This report referenced an Instagram post from Kevin Kramer, a teammate of Conti at the University of Pittsburgh where the two played college baseball. Advertisement "Today I share the worst news imaginable - my friend, my Pitt teammate and @mlb @dbacks World Series champion Jason Conti suffered a severe brain injury and is on life support," Kramer wrote. "Unfortunately, he is not going to survive past the weekend. I'm devastated - as a team we are devastated. Rest in peace my friend." Kramer continued, writing, "@pearljam is playing in your hometown of Pittsburgh tomorrow night for you on your last night. Lots of kids grow up dreaming of becoming a @mlb player. Jason lived that dream. My thoughts are with the entire Conti family." On Monday, the Arizona Diamondbacks posted a message on X in response to Conti's passing. Advertisement "We are deeply saddened by the sudden passing of former outfielder Jason Conti," the team wrote. "Our thoughts and prayers are with Jason's family and friends at this time." Conti played parts of five seasons in Major League Baseball, spending two of those in Arizona. He appeared in five games during the 2001 season that ended in a World Series championship for the Diamondbacks. His career also included stops with the Tampa Bay Rays, Milwaukee Brewers and Texas Rangers. A left-handed hitting outfielder, Conti was selected by the Diamondbacks in the 32nd round of the 1996 MLB Draft. He debuted in 2000. Trade Idea Sends Tomoyuki Sugano to the Chicago Cubs

Trade Idea Sends Tomoyuki Sugano to the Chicago Cubs originally appeared on Athlon Sports. This season, the Chicago Cubs have gone all in on their elusive World Series aspirations. With the Kyle Tucker trade in the rearview mirror, the team has kept their foot on the gas, racing to the top of the NL Central with a comfortable four-game lead. However, the Cubs are suffering from a key weakness: an injury-prone pitching staff. Advertisement Injuries to Shota Imanaga, Javier Assad, and Justin Steele have weighed heavily on the team's rotation. The Chicago pitching staff owns a 3.84 ERA as a whole, placing them 18th for that stat in MLB. While Imanaga is expected back soon, Assad will still be out for a while, and Steele is done for the year. With the Cubs on the hunt for a solid mid-rotation arm, one analyst might have found a satisfactory solution. In a recent article, Sports Illustrated's Kyle Morton proposed targeting the Orioles' offseason international signing, Tomoyuki Sugano. Morton wrote this on the subject: Baltimore Orioles starting pitcher Tomoyuki Sugano (19) reacts in the eighth inning against the Los Angeles Angels at Angel Lee-Imagn Images 'The outlook long-term [for the Cubs] is good, but if [Kyle] Tucker leaves, it's hard to see Chicago being more of a World Series contender than they are at this very moment. That means that [Jed] Hoyer should be aggressive in filling the void Steele has left in the rotation, and possibly the best option available is Baltimore Orioles pitcher Tomoyuki Sugano. Advertisement 'Sugano, a 35-year-old rookie in the midst of his first season in the United States, has been a revelation in the midst of a nightmare campaign in Baltimore.' One of Japan's top aces, Sugano owns a 3.23 ERA with 35 strikeouts in his rookie year. He has been effective in limiting walks and going deep into games. Since his contract is only for one year, chances are high that the struggling Orioles will trade him. Two top pitchers in NCAA softball will meet in Women's College World Series semifinals

On Monday night at 7 p.m. ET, fans of college softball will be treated to what is shaping up to be one of the best pitcher's duels of the NCAA Tournament. In the semifinals of the Women's College World Series, No. 2 Oklahoma will face No. 12 Texas Tech. The matchup will probably pit two of the best pitchers in the sport against each other. It's likely that Oklahoma ace Sam Landry will take the circle for the Sooners in a must-win game, while NiJaree Canady — arguably the sport's top arm — will lead the Red Raiders. Advertisement Canady was the National Player of the Year last season at Stanford and in the offseason transferred to Texas Tech, wooed by what is reportedly the richest NIL deal in Division I college softball. According to ESPN, Texas Tech's NIL collective — the Matador Club — signed Canady to a $1,050,024 contract. She had taken Stanford to two straight World Series and aimed to do the same for the Red Raiders. The investment by Texas Tech paid off in a big way. Canady was a unanimous First-Team All-American, the NFCA Pitcher of the Year and the Big 12 Pitcher of the Year. She led the Red Raiders to their first Big 12 Tournament title (where she pitched in every game and didn't allow a run), their first Super Regional appearance, and their first trip to the World Series in Oklahoma City. Canady leads all of Division I softball in victories (32), ERA (0.86) and hits allowed per seven innings (3.61). She's also seventh in strikeouts per seven innings (9.5), seventh in shutouts (7), and fourth in strikeout-to-walk ratio (6.88). She's been an asset at the plate this season too with 11 home runs, 34 RBI and a .306 batting average. And she's done all of this, apparently, while playing with an injured hamstring. Advertisement While Canady has led Texas Tech to unprecedented heights, Landry is trying to keep Oklahoma in its throne atop the sport. The Sooners have won four straight national championships and are now just a few games away from winning a wildly impressive fifth consecutive title. Like Canady, Landry came to Oklahoma via transfer, arriving in the offseason from Louisiana. She was coached there by current Texas Tech skipper Gerry Glasco. This season, with Patty Gasso's Sooners, Landry was named a First Team All-American and the SEC Newcomer of the Year. She's piled up a 25-5 record, a 1.89 ERA and 180 strikeouts. If necessary, Texas Tech and Oklahoma will face off twice on Monday night, but the first game is a must-win for the Sooners as the tournament is still in its double-elimination stage. A Game One victory for the Red Raiders would send them to the finals of the College World Series. A loss would set up a pivotal Game Two, giving the Sooners another chance to defend their title. Advertisement This is where it's worth noting that Canady has won 10 straight games. Her last loss came on May 2 where she pitched just one inning against BYU. She hasn't lost a game where she's pitched multiple innings since April 17. On Monday night, Oklahoma's dynasty is on the line, while Canady has the chance to grow her legend.
