'Extremely bad taste!' Netflix leaves STUNNED fans gasping 'Oh my god' with horrendously 'tasteless' Tweet seemingly making light of the Southport dance class child murders
Streaming giant Netflix faced accusations of being 'tasteless' and 'myopic' after promoting a horror film about a hook-wielding killer in a town called Southport - without realising the stark connotation for UK viewers.
The platform had been attempting to publicise a trailer for I Know What You Did Last Summer, which is making a comeback 28 years after its debut.
Loosely based on Lois Duncan's novel of the same name, the original box office hit first came out in 1997, followed by I Still Know What You Did Last Summer a year later.
But fans turned on Netflix last night after it posted a still from the trailer on X with the clumsily-worded caption: 'This isn't the first time there's been violence like this in Southport.'
UK-based social media users were swift to point out that the post - while referring to Southport, North Carolina - was insensitive to the tragic stabbings of Alice da Silva Aguiar, nine, Elsie Dot Stancombe, seven, and Bebe King, six, at a Taylor Swift-themed summer camp in Southport, Merseyside, last July.
Axel Rudakubana, 18, was jailed for a minimum of 52 years in January for the triple killing. He was also charged with the attempted murder of eight other children, who cannot be named for legal reasons, class instructor Leanne Lucas and businessman John Hayes.
In the aftermath of the tragedy, false information about the alleged perpetrator of the Southport attack fuelled an unprecedented outbreak of violence and rioting in 27 towns, with the unrest ending in more than 1,500 people being arrested across the UK.
One user wrote in disbelief of the now-deleted Tweet: 'A bit tasteless, eh?'

Another said: 'Erm, you need to have a chat with your UK office about why this needs to be deleted.'
A third wrote: 'Oh, my god. This is in extremely bad taste! I can only assume you're not in the UK and have no idea what evil things happened in Southport just a few months ago!'
Other users called on Netflix to delete the post.
'I'll assume you're American and as myopic as they come, but change the caption. Not cool,' another pleaded.
The revamped film, directed by Jennifer Kaytin Robinson and slated for release on July 18, stars original cast members Jennifer Love Hewitt as Julie James and Freddie Prinze Jr as Ray Bronson.
Netflix, which has since deleted the post, has been contacted for comment.

Records show Baroness 'Bra', 53, and Mr Barrowman, 60, have sold two Glasgow townhouses to celebrity friends in the last 12 months – making £2 million in profit. A mews house in Chelsea, west London, linked to Ms Mone's son Declan's firm has also been sold for £2.185 million to a senior member of a Middle Eastern Royal Family. And last year the couple sold their £19 million London home and the £6.8 million Lady M yacht. Ms Mone's friends last night said she had told them she is seeking to start afresh in Miami, Florida. The couple are at the centre of an anti-corruption probe by the National Crime Agency which saw £75 million of their assets frozen. The agency is investigating PPE Medpro, led by Mr Barrowman, which was awarded a government contract to supply protective equipment during Covid after being placed in a priority lane on the recommendation of Ms Mone. Paperwork suggests the firm paid Mr Barrowman £60 million in 'profit', prompting him to put £29 million into a trust benefiting Ms Mone and her children. Soon after they received the cash boost, firms registered on the Isle of Man and linked to Mr Barrowman's Knox Group – Breck Ltd, Bagshaw Ltd and Praeban Ltd – bought a series of properties on Park Circus in Glasgow's West End costing £10,025,000. Between December 2020 and August 2022 the firms bought nine homes in the area. Yet in December 2023, a number of the properties were frozen under the Proceeds of Crime Act. Now a Mail on Sunday investigation shows the couple have begun to offload some of their empire. There is no suggestion that any of the sales breached existing orders. One house has been bought by Ms Mone's friend Nick Haddow, a photographer who shot her Ultimo bra campaign with supermodel Helena Christensen in 2006. The house was bought in 2020 for £1.7 million by a firm co-owned by Mr Barrowman's Knox group but records show it was sold to Mr Haddow's company Haddow and Lobjani Ltd last year for £2 million. Another nearby home bought in July 2020 for £1.425 million was sold to a Scottish rock star for £2.8 million earlier this year. Firms linked to the couple are thought to have made around £2 million in profits on the homes. Our probe shows they could be earning around £21,500 a month by letting some of the other homes. The Department of Health is suing PPE Medpro over claims that gowns supplied by the firm were not fit for use.

Bruce Springsteen joined by Paul McCartney at Liverpool concert
Singer Bruce Springsteen brought out a special guest at his show in Liverpool as he performed with local star Sir Paul McCartney. The American musician was joined on stage by the 82-year-old Beatles star during the second of two shows at Anfield stadium on Saturday, with Sir Paul then providing vocals as the pair played the band's Can't Buy Me Love. Springsteen, 75, and his E Street Band are in the UK as part of his Land of Hope and Dreams Tour, which kicked off with three shows in Manchester last month. Footage shared on social media showed the surprised crowd cheering loudly as Sir Paul was introduced, before he then playfully pointed at Springsteen and the pair shared an embrace. Before he left the stage after their performance, Sir Paul addressed the crowd and reportedly said: 'Thank you, Scousers.' The two men have previously performed together on several occasions, most notably when Sir Paul delivered a headline set at Glastonbury in 2022. Go to anti-misogyny lessons? Succession star Brian Cox channels his inner Logan Roy as he says he is 'f****** sick' of woke sensitivity training
It's not hard to imagine what Logan Roy's response would be if he was asked to attend anti- misogyny training. And it seems Brian Cox thought much the same as his Succession character would as he gave typically short shrift to lessons that he is required to take before his upcoming play. The Scottish actor, 79, told The Mail on Sunday: 'It's all so proper, and I'm so f****** sick of proper. It's all very conditioned and it's about as deep as a blackhead, quite frankly. 'I'm a bit long in the tooth to do any anti-misogyny training. It's for much younger people than me.' Cox is returning to the stage in his home country for the first time in a decade to star in Make It Happen, a satire of the downfall of the Royal Bank of Scotland during the 2008 financial crisis. He will star as the ghost of Scottish economist and philosopher Adam Smith in the play, written by James Graham and directed by Adam Panton. The National Theatre of Scotland, which is staging the production, also asked white actors to attend anti-racism training – saying it was 'not compulsory for people of colour or from the global majority [which includes anyone who is not white]'. However, following a complaint from the Free Speech Union that the policy treated 'members of one racial group less favourably', the theatre ordered a review. It is now understood that black actors have been told to attend the training as well. The Free Speech Union reported the theatre to the UK equality watchdog under the Equality Act, which prohibits employers from treating staff differently based on race, skin colour, nationality and ethnic origin. Cox told the MoS he was feeling 'all right' about starting rehearsals for the play, which will open at the Edinburgh International Festival on July 30. He celebrated his birthday last week at the Berkshire Film Festival in Massachusetts, where he was a guest of honour. The National Theatre of Scotland said: 'We acknowledge that use of the correct language around the offer of this training is important and this is currently under review.'
