Bangladesh eyes foreign operators for Chattogram port terminals

Fibre2Fashiona day ago
Bangladesh aims to appoint foreign operators for the New Mooring Container Terminal (NCT), Laldia Container Terminal, and one Bay Terminal facility at Chattogram Port by December, according to Bangladesh Investment Development Authority (BIDA) chief Chowdhury Ashik Mahmud Bin Harun.
Speaking at the port, Harun confirmed work was underway to issue an international request for proposal. The move follows the Bangladesh Navy-run Chittagong Dry Dock Limited's takeover of NCT in July, which has since boosted container handling by 30 per cent and cut vessel turnaround time by 13 per cent.
Bangladesh plans to appoint foreign operators for three Chattogram Port terminals, including NCT, by December, Bida chief Ashik Mahmud said. The move follows a Navy-led boost in efficiency. Talks with DP World are ongoing. Mahmud sees potential to handle 1.9 million TEUs, urges global standards, and unveiled digital initiatives, with plans to quintuple port capacity by 2030.
Despite political opposition citing national interests, the government argued that engaging renowned global port operators will improve efficiency and strengthen Bangladesh's position in global trade. Talks are ongoing with UAE-based DP World for NCT operations, as per Bangladeshi media reports.
Mahmud stressed that Chattogram Port's performance is critical to Bangladesh's goal of becoming a global manufacturing hub, warning that inefficiency could hinder industrial projects. He noted that handling up to 1.9 million Twenty-foot Equivalent Units (TEUs) through Chattogram Port is feasible.
'Last year, our highest record was 1.3 million TEUs (annual container handling). With technology, best practices, and global standards, this number can rise further,' said media reports, citing Harun.
He also acknowledged challenges with the Saudi firm Red Sea Gateway Terminal, the current operator of Patenga Container Terminal, citing technical issues and the government's limited experience with international operators.
The BIDA chairman also launched several digital initiatives at the port, including a Shipping and Logistics Online Desk and a Vehicle and Container Digital Data Exchange System. The government plans to expand port capacity up to fivefold by 2030.

Adani International School Supports ISSO To Redefine Sporting Excellence In India

Adani International School has taken a major step to enhance the nation's sports education framework by entering into a collaboration with the International Schools Sports Organisation (ISSO). Namrata Adani, promoter of Adani International School, is now part of the advisory board of ISSO, India's only dedicated sports body for international curriculum schools affiliated with globally recognised boards such as the International Baccalaureate (IB), Cambridge, Edexcel, and the US-based National School Boards Association (NSBA). Through this collaboration, Adani International School will support ISSO — founded in 2017 — in scaling sporting infrastructure, enhancing athlete training, and promoting participation in global events. "We are at an inflection point in India's educational and sporting landscape," said Mrs. Namrata Adani of the Adani Group in a statement. "Through this collaboration, we aim to create inclusive, future-ready institutions where students are empowered to pursue excellence both in the classroom and on the sports field. It is an honour to support ISSO in establishing a structured, globally benchmarked sports culture for international schools in India." Aakanksha Thapak, director of ISSO, is optimistic that the collaboration with Adani International School will unlock greater possibilities. "We are delighted to welcome Mrs. Namrata Adani and the Adani Group as part of our shared vision for youth empowerment through sports. Over the years, ISSO has built a structured pathway for international school students to grow through competitive sport — from grassroots to national and international levels. With the leadership and forward-thinking vision of Mrs. Adani, this collaboration is set to further strengthen the ecosystem we've created. Together, we look forward to unlocking greater sporting possibilities and inspiring thousands of young athletes across international schools," she said.

US judge tosses Rumble lawsuit claiming advertising boycott

- A U.S. judge on Wednesday dismissed online video-sharing and internet-hosting company Rumble 's lawsuit accusing spirits maker Diageo and other advertisers of conspiring to withhold ad spending on its platform, as the same court weighs a similar case lodged by billionaire Elon Musk's social media company X. In her ruling, U.S. District Judge Jane Boyle in Dallas said Texas federal court was not the proper forum for Rumble's lawsuit against Diageo and advertising and marketing agency WPP, which are both based in England, and Brussels-based World Federation of Advertisers. Boyle's ruling did not address the merits of the lawsuit filed last year by Florida-based Rumble, which hosts U.S. President Donald Trump's Truth Social. The judge also said it was an "open question" whether her Texas court was the appropriate forum for a related lawsuit that X filed last year against the advertising federation and other company defendants. Rumble and two lawyers representing the company did not immediately respond to requests for comment, and neither did World Federation of Advertisers and Diageo. WPP declined to comment. X did not immediately respond to a request for comment. The defendants in both lawsuits have denied they had an agreement to withhold advertising spending on Rumble. Rumble's case focused on a " brand-safety standards " initiative by the advertising federation called the Global Alliance for Responsible Media . Rumble accused members of the alliance, which lasted until last year, of illegally boycotting platforms that did not comply with those standards. In a court filing in February, Diageo and the other defendants countered that "there are perfectly good non-boycott reasons why defendants and others have chosen not to advertise on Rumble, which prides itself on lax content moderation and brand-safety measures." The defendants told the court that Rumble's lawsuit was an attempt to force them to do business with the platform despite competitive reasons not to do so, and that Rumble was trying to "weaponise the antitrust laws to create that business relationship." They also argued the lawsuit "has nothing to do with Texas."
