Celtic fans set new title record as Rangers and Russell Martin served bleak sentence by Hotline jury

Yahoo2 days ago
It could be the earliest finish to the Premiership season ever.
September 1 would have to be a new record but - according to Celtic fans - that's when Brendan Rodgers' side will effectively be handed the trophy.
Because they'll have beaten Russell Martin's ropey Rangers to potentially go 10 points clear at the top of the table - before we've even had an international break.

It's all hypothetical, of course, but after Celtic's win at Pittodrie and Gers slipping up against Dundee, the Hoops supporters on the Hotline are in confident mood.
And on the other side of the city, Martin is feeling the heat already.
In fact, some cocky Parkhead punters think the Ibrox gaffer might struggle to get into SECOND place.
First up, Gordon Ashley from Ayr said: 'Why are Rangers fans getting so upset? When you see their true position in Scottish football, last year Aberdeen were the champions' biggest challengers for silverware - and this year it will be Hearts.
'Celtic are more than double the size of their club and the glory days are over for Rangers, so get used to it guys.'
Eddie Eason, Ballingry, said: 'The boring Hotline caller, Alan Fleet, says he'd bet money on Celtic losing to the minnows his team have played.
'Really? That's why one bookie is already paying out on Celtic winning the league.'
Bud Hay, Dumfries, said: 'I don't see that other mob bragging much this season. After saying they'd win this and that - it's now very quiet at Ibrox. This is so easy for Celtic, I don't see us dropping many points at all this season. The gap is growing.'
Steven McSherry, Uddingston, said: 'With Hibs and Hearts in good shape, it augurs well for Celtic as we need a challenge to keep us sharp.
'With Rangers now a spent force in Scottish football we need others to provide strong competition.'
Stephen Johnstone from Ardentinny, at least tried to add a bit of humour - if you can call it that - by saying: 'What do Rangers' Premiership starts and peeling onions have in common? Ultimately, they both end in tears.'
Don't give up the day job, Stephen.
At Ibrox, all is not well after their home draw with the Dark Blues where fans made their feelings known towards Martin.
And he wasn't getting much Hotline sympathy either.
David Thomson from Milngavie said: 'Martin isn't helping himself with some of the things he's coming out with. He says Rangers are now unbeaten in five games but supporters don't want to hear that.
'If we lose to Celtic at Ibrox on August 31 and go 10 points behind, the league season will be over and the kids are barely back at school. That's not good enough.'
The Gers gaffer was cut a bit of slack by Drew Ferguson from Oban who said: 'Irrespective of whether you like or dislike Martin, he needs to be given time. New players are still trying to develop relationships on the pitch.
'What is clear is that Max Aarons isn't superior to anything we've already got. And Martin still needs a left-back, centre-back and striker.'
Elsewhere, Hearts have started the season on fire and - if Tony Bloom is to be believed - will mount a title challenge of their own.
Unsurprisingly, their rivals from across the city aren't having it.
Neil Renton from Leith said: 'Never mind Liam Gallagher having a go at Edinburgh Council - it can't be long before Hearts fans do the same.
'After all, how come they've not been allowed to have a parade after winning the league? Some might say the Jambos shouldn't get too carried away after just two games!'
Someone who won't get carried away, despite being on the verge of a massive move to Serie A, is humble Scotland star Lennon Miller.
The 18-year-old is on his way to Udinese where he'll join the likes of Scott McTominay, Billy Gilmour and Lewis Ferguson in the Italian top flight.
Celtic were rumoured to be interested in Miller but one punter says that was never going to happen.
Stephen Mulhern from Dumbarton said: 'The will he, won't he Miller saga is reaching a conclusion as he heads to Italy.
'I don't agree this is a John McGinn situation for Celtic. The fact is, we have an abundance of talent in midfield and Miller would have been warming the bench. At this stage of his career, he obviously wants to be in a starting line-up.'

Report – Inter Milan To Miss Out As Sevilla Star Set To Join Bayer Leverkusen

Inter Milan are set to miss out on the signature of the Loic Bade, with the Sevilla defender set to join Bayer Leverkusen. This according to German broadcaster Sky Sports Deutschland, via FCInterNews. Loic Bade is one name that has emerged in Inter Milan's search for a defender. The Nerazzurri have already missed out on major targets such as Koni De Winter and Giovanni Leoni. However, there is still a sense that Inter could sign a defender late in the window. Particularly if Benjamin Pavard is to leave. Therefore, Inter have been sounding out other targets. Including Sevilla and France defender Loic Bade. And Bade himself had reportedly stalled on a move to Leverkusen. If there was a possibility to join Inter, that would have been the France international's preference. However, according to Sky Sports Deutschland, Leverkusen are close to getting the deal over the line. The 2023-24 Bundesliga champions will pay a fee of around €30 million for Bade. Unless Inter are to make a quick move to sign bade ahead of Leverkusen, Sky Deutschland anticipate that the Frenchman will complete his move early next week.

Hurzeler verdict as Albion concede late leveller to Fulham

Fabian Hurzeler said he was pleased with Albion's performance as they were held to a draw by Fulham. But he was less happy about their work leading up to a late goal for the visitors. Rodrigo Muniz fired home from a corner deep in added time to cancel out a Matt O'Riley penalty. Th goal came from a flag kick after Jan Paul van Hecke had been forced to deflect a shot wide. Asked whether his side did enough to have opened the season with a win, Albion boss Hurzeler said: 'No, otherwise we would have won it. 'I think we defended really well, 96 minutes, and then there was one corner. 'I think it's not the corner, it's more the throw before and then the consequence after the throw in the corner. Latest from Albion.. ALBION 1 FULHAM 1: Seagulls concede in stoppage-time after O'Riley penalty 'I think that was the only shot they had during the game. I think that's something we have to do better, but overall I'm pleased with the performance. 'Of course, the team will get judged by the results, but we really should focus on the performance. 'We did so many things, caught so many positive things, and that's my main focus for the following week. 'Then I'm sure the results will come.'

Richarlison brace helps Tottenham win season opener against Burnley

Richarlison netted a brace, including a superb scissor kick, as Thomas Frank picked up a first Premier League win in charge of Tottenham with a 3-0 victory over Burnley. Frank was without injured pair James Maddison and Dejan Kulusevski, but Richarlison's double helped Spurs secure a first league win since April 6. Mohammed Kudus twice set up Richarlison for his goals, firstly in the 10th minute before he supplied a cross which the latter volleyed in on the hour mark. Brennan Johnson added another six minutes later to wrap up the win for Tottenham on a tough top-flight return for Burnley boss Scott Parker at his old club. Newcastle missed the presence of Alexander Isak as they shared the spoils in a goalless draw with 10-man Aston Villa. Isak was left out by boss Eddie Howe as the Sweden international tries to force a move away from St James' Park this summer. But the Magpies could have done with their star man as they failed to find a way past Villa, who had Ezri Konsa sent off in the 66th minute. Sunderland marked their return to the Premier League in style after they swept West Ham aside with a 3-0 win at the Stadium of Light. Following an eight-year absence from the league, the Black Cats went ahead just after the hour mark through Eliezer Mayenda before Dan Ballard's header doubled their advantage. Substitute Wilson Isidor came off the bench and put the cherry on top of a perfect afternoon to wrap up three points in Sunderland's first Premier League appearance since May 2017. Rodrigo Muniz struck deep into stoppage time as Fulham snatched a 1-1 draw from under the nose of Brighton at the Amex Stadium. Brazilian forward Muniz pounced six minutes into added time after Brighton failed to deal with Harry Wilson's corner. Albion had looked on course to make a winning start to the season when Matt O'Riley tucked home a 55th-minute penalty after Sander Berge brought down Georginio Rutter.
