Punjab illegal cracker unit blast: NGT seeks response from CPCB
The NGT had taken a suo motu note of news reports on the May 30 blast at the unauthorised cracker unit
In an order dated June 5, a bench of judicial member Arun Kumar Tyagi and expert member A Senthil Vel said, 'According to the news item, it is alleged that the factory operator managed to buy a huge volume of explosives and other material used in producing firecrackers without permission, and that even after 10 hours of the explosion, the smell of potash emanated from the debris.'
The bench said that the incident attracted provisions of the Public Liability Insurance Act, the Environment (Protection) Act, Manufacture, Storage and Import of Hazardous Chemical Rules, Chemical Accidents (Emergency Planning, Preparedness and Response) Rules, Explosives Act, Explosive Substances Act and Explosives Rules.
The tribunal impleaded as parties or respondents the CPCB, Punjab State Pollution Control Board, the Chandigarh regional office of the Union ministry of environment, forest and climate change and the district magistrate or deputy commissioner concerned.
'Let a notice be issued to the respondents for filing their response/reply,' the tribunal said, posting the hearing on August 4.

Later, after obtaining the correct phone number, the team traced the location to Shamli and rescued the girl from a home. Police later learned that the girl had left her home and taken a bus to a railway station and randomly boarded a train that led her to Meerut. While she was wandering in the station, she encountered a 20-year-old man, who promised to help her settle down. However, it was a trap. The man from Hapur, along with a 55-year-old associate from Meerut, took the girl to Shamli, where they forced her to marry a 40-year-old man on July 24 in exchange for Rs 15,000-20,000. They made a fake Aadhaar card to falsify her age as 19 years. Four days after the forced marriage, the girl was allegedly sexually assaulted by the 40-year-old man at his residence. Police are now investigating whether other minor girls — often from impoverished backgrounds — were similarly trafficked and forcibly married to older men. The duo, and the man who married the girl, have been booked under multiple sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including charges of human trafficking , exploitation of a trafficked person, and forgery of official documents. Additionally, provisions under Sections 6 and 21 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act as well as Sections 9 and 10 of the Prohibition of Child Marriage Act, 2006, have been invoked against the trio. Ambergris worth 2.97 crore seized, two held
Ahmedabad: The Ahmedabad Rural Special Operations Group (SOG) seized 2.976 kg of ambergris (sperm whale vomit) valued at Rs 2.97 crore in an operation near Sarkhej-Sanand Highway on Saturday. Two suspects were arrested. Police said the action followed a tip-off and was carried out near Gibpura village under Sanand police station limits. The suspects were found carrying ambergris, also known as "floating gold," along with two mobiles worth Rs 2,000 and Rs 700 in cash. The total seizure is valued at Rs 2,97,62,700. During interrogation, the accused disclosed that the ambergris was supplied by a Bhavnagar resident. They admitted to searching for potential buyers because of its high market value. Officials said the material was verified by the Range Forest Officer and FSL experts. Fourth-grader alleges sexual abuse in school
Kolkata: A fourth-grade student at a school in Naktala, was allegedly sexually abused by an outsider, who had entered the school premises to deliver books on Wednesday. The accused allegedly molested the student when she was alone in a classroom. Police registered a case under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act after these allegations. Parents who gathered outside the school allegedly caught the man and assaulted him before he managed to flee. The accused could not be apprehended, and locals alleged that a teacher from the school helped him escape. Following the incident, agitated guardians staged a protest outside the school, demanding action. A large police force was deployed to bring the situation under control. The complaint was lodged at Netaji Nagar police station by the school authorities. Nobody has been arrested yet.
