Cummings Aerospace ready to manufacture Hellhound munition
Cummings Aerospace is now ready to manufacture its Hellhound loitering munition at what equates to low-rate production, CEO Sheila Cummings told Defense News in a recent interview at its new production facility near Huntsville, Alabama.
The company chose a space next door to Redstone Arsenal, Alabama, home to the program office and testing and development for Army aviation, in 2021 and designed and built a facility intended to produce large numbers of the drones.
'The work we have done to date, not only with the development of the vehicle, but preparing for major acquisition and production of these vehicles, has been a huge focus for us,' Cummings said. 'We're really excited that we are now at manufacturing readiness level 7.'
The classification equates to a defined production workflow at the facility and the establishment of work instructions for building the air vehicles.
Hellhound, weighing less than 25 pounds, flew faster than 350 miles per hour at full throttle while passing distances of 20 kilometers using just 50% of its fuel, according to the company.
The air vehicle is the first major end-to-end weapon system developed by Cummings Aerospace, a Native American woman-owned small business founded in 2009 as an aerospace engineering outfit with expertise in design, development, production and sustainment of capabilities, including missiles, radars and command-and-control system technologies.
Hellhound will be demonstrated in several upcoming events with special operations, the U.S. Navy and even abroad in the U.K. this summer, according to Cummings.
'We're using these demo opportunities, in addition to our flight tests, to ultimately execute low-rate production,' Cummings said. 'We're talking about quantities of 12 to 14 vehicles for these demos,' she added, 'but it's really allowing us to fully vet our production process.'
The military is changing the way it acquires weapon systems and, in many cases, requires companies to prove they can build systems at scale as part of competitive acquisitions. Historically, a weapon system might be chosen for its performance on the battlefield without much attention paid to the amount of work it would take to build a system or even how stable the supplier base was.
Cummings Aerospace wrapped up flight tests of its turbo-jet-powered, 3D-printed kamikaze drone earlier this year and is readying the S3 version of its man-portable Hellhound for submission to the U.S. Army's Low Altitude Stalking and Striking Ordnance, or LASSO, competition set to kick off later this year.
The competition would require the company to build 135 munitions total and would expect companies chosen to build 35 prototypes right out of the gate.
In Cumming's opinion, the war in Ukraine and tensions in the Indo-Pacific have underscored the need to ensure production capacity and understand the supply chain and its risks.
'That's what's driven the whole modular design and making sure that we have an open systems architecture and be able to swap in technologies very readily,' Cummings said.
A large portion of the air vehicle is made using commercially available 3D printers in-house and buying commercially available standard parts that are not unique to just a few suppliers, Cummings said.
'If you think about low-cost solutions — that's part of the strategy — is we have to design something that we can get screws from multiple vendors, we can get 3D print material from multiple vendors,' she said. 'We talk about exquisite payloads, that's a different challenge, but electronics, we have to make sure we can source them from multiple vendors.'
And to surge even further, Cummings said there are other solutions that are easy to implement like licensing the design to other suppliers to go and produce using standard 3D printers to help expand production capacity.
For the Huntsville facility, Cummings said her goal is to produce at least 100 air vehicles a month.
'Payloads obviously drive some of that,' she noted, but added that there is room to grow beyond that, whether it's next door or using the supplier base to ramp up demand.
The expectation now is 'not just a new, novel technology or capability, but prove that you can make it,' Cummings said. 'So we're proving we can make them and make them at scale.'

As homeowners insurance becomes more expensive, many Americans are choosing to go without it – even as risks that are prevented, or at least mitigated, by insurance coverage increase. The Federal Reserve's Economic Well-Being of U.S. Households of 2024, released in May 2025, is the latest analysis to document the trend. Across the country, 7% of all homeowners in the survey of more than 12,000 respondents had no insurance, the report found, although there were some discrepancies based on geography. When asked why they didn't have homeowners insurance, 43% said they 'couldn't afford it', while another 19% said 'it is not worth the cost.' And respondents with fewer financial resources were among the most likely to go without insurance. Roughly 3 in 10 homeowners with income less than $25,000 or those whose only asset was their home went without. The Fed's findings track almost exactly with a report published in early 2024 by the nonprofit watchdog group Consumer Federation of America. Approximately 7.4% of American homeowners are uninsured, that report found, representing 6.1 million homes. "Homeowners earning under $50,000 per year are twice as likely to lack insurance compared to homeowners in general,' CFA's authors wrote, adding that 22% of Native American homeowners, 14% of Hispanic homeowners, and 11% of Black homeowners have no insurance. The findings are concerning, the report adds, because it means those owners 'are at risk of losing their homes in the face of ever-escalating climate disasters and storms.' An analysis from data analytics provider First Street, released in May 2025, found a direct correlation between lack of insurance and foreclosures. But First Street's findings also demonstrate it's not just the uninsured homes that suffer, but the broader communities as a whole. When storms hit and homeowners fall into delinquency, there's less tax revenue for municipal services like transportation and less demand boosting the local economy. Homes may be abandoned or not kept up, and the value of even undamaged homes may increase more slowly or decline outright. Still, there are good reasons why millions of homeowners say insurance is too expensive for them. 2025 data from CFA shows that in 2024, a typical homeowner – with a midrange credit score and a house with a $350,000 replacement value – faced an average premium of $3,303 per year – $275 per month. Those numbers have been growing. First Street has shown that premiums started to surge around 2013. As of 2022, insurance costs made up more than 20% of the typical mortgage payment, roughly triple the 7-8% that they made up in the decade or so before 2013. More: Homeownership used to mean stable housing costs. That's a thing of the past. Since 2019, foreclosures have ticked up in tandem with the cost of insurance, First Street has shown. 'The one thing proven to prevent foreclosures is getting so expensive that it is causing foreclosures,' the group said. To combat the problem, CFA has a few recommendations. The group believes that requiring insurance companies to publicly release data on homeowners insurance underwriting, pricing, coverage, and claims every year would be a helpful start, by making the industry more transparent. CFA also recommends investing federal and state dollars in housing resiliency, and requiring that insurance companies charge lower premiums of homeowners who make climate risk reduction upgrades to their homes. 'The pace of rapidly rising premiums is increasingly unsustainable,' CFA said.

'Fewer decision-makers. More agility. The key is building a strategy around your lifestyle and values, not someone else's. It's cost effective and empowering,' he said. Single retirees are probably also saving on energy bills by using less electricity and saving on the water bill as well, Cummings pointed out. Single retirees might also be saving on car costs. 'If you have a vehicle, you are more than likely only traveling for one, which means less money is going out for gas, less on vehicle maintenance and insurance than if you were paying these bills for two people.' In general, being single tends to mean not only a lower spend on almost all basic essentials but 'leaner living,' according to Cummings. 'You are not planning around someone else's schedule, preferences or spending habits. That freedom lets you live smaller, travel lighter and spend more intentionally.' Without a partner to have to negotiate living arrangements with, you're free to find roommates or co-housing communities that can dramatically reduce housing costs, Cummings said. 'You could cut housing expenses by as much as half just by sharing space in a retirement-friendly town with walkability.' Budgeting can also be simpler if you're single, with only one set of expenses and one income to plan around. 'That clarity can make it easier to track spending, avoid lifestyle creep and make adjustments on the fly,' Cummings said. Daniel added, 'There is no need to compromise on spending priorities and setting plans to travel as desired destinations can be possible without trying to meet the needs of two people.' Though there are certain tax benefits that favor married people, single retirees over 65 get a higher standard deduction than younger single people, Daniel said. 'Singles may fall into lower tax brackets post-retirement making it advantageous to convert traditional IRA to a Roth IRA at reduced tax rates,' he said. Best yet, older single adults may be able to avoid 'the marriage penalty' depending on tax brackets. Singles may pay less tax than married couples who file jointly (and thus are taxed on joint income). Don't forget the saver's credit for singles, Cummings pointed out. Not to mention, 'filing as single [person] gives you a more predictable tax structure year over year,' he said. When it comes to healthcare as a single person, the healthcare premiums for anyone ages 65 and older, Medicare, is determined by your income, according to Richard E. Craft, a financial advisor and CEO of Wealth Advisory Group. 'Remember, the full retirement age for Social Security is age 67, not 65 like for Medicare,' Craft said. A single person only needs to elect Medicare Part A for hospitalization, Part B for doctors and therapy services, and a Part D for prescription drugs. 'The cost for one is half of the cost for two so this saves money. You also have only one person to incur expenses so this should save over the long run.' 'Without a partner's income boosting your MAGI (Medicare Adjusted Gross Income) you could fall into a lower bracket,' Cummings said. That can reduce what you pay for Parts B and D. 'You also won't have a spouse's long-term care risks, which simplifies planning,' he said. If you want to keep working for the social and financial benefits, Craft pointed out that a single retiree could take a part-time job and continue to contribute to a tax-deductible IRA. 'Even better, work for an employer who offers an attractive match for the 401(k) and contribute up to $31,000 and get the match on top of that. Remember, you don't have to work full time to be eligible for a 401(k).' In a nutshell, the freedom to plan for one's own lifestyle needs is much simpler than when balancing the wants for two people, Craft said. '[A single person] might be more flexible, can live on a smaller budget, can pick a low-cost area to live and cut expenses easier than two people … You can do with less if you want to.'
