‘You will be in my heart forever' – Sister of Martha Nolan tells funeral of the ‘unbreakable' bond they shared

Martha Nolan (33), a fashion designer and entrepreneur, was found unresponsive at Montauk Yacht Club in East Hampton on Long Island, New York, on August 5 and was pronounced dead at the scene after emergency medical responders and East Hampton police arrived.
Ms Nolan was originally from Carlow but had been living in the US since 2015.
During her funeral mass today at The Cathedral of the Assumption in Carlow town, voices with both Irish and American accents echoed around the church – a testament to the lives Ms Nolan touched, both sides of the Atlantic.
Despite her ambition and success in America, Ms Nolan never forgot her Irish roots. Placed next to her coffin was her fashion brand and legacy, East x East, alongside a tin whistle – two symbols representing two very different chapters in Ms Nolan's life.
An Irish and an American flag were also placed beside her coffin by her loved ones, a tribute to a 'short but packed life' spent in Ireland and then America.
Accompanying the two flags was a passport, symbolising Ms Nolan's love for travel and adventure, along with a copy of St. Martha's prayer, which Ms Nolan's mother Elma, said every Tuesday. Ms Nolan was born on a Tuesday and passed away on a Tuesday.
The hundreds of mourners attending Ms Nolan's funeral mass today heard that Ms Nolan will always be remembered by her loved ones as 'loyal, supportive and full of life'.
Her partner Nick DeRubio smiled as he recalled how Ms Nolan 'had a special way of lighting up every room she walked into'.
"One couldn't help but feel her positive presence in every space she entered,' said Nick. 'Martha had a way of putting people she loved first. She loved helping people and many of you in this room have been lucky enough to experience that love. Whether it was telling me to 'cop on and focus on the good in life' or just being a shoulder to lean on.
"The shining light that Martha brought into this world is a reflection of everybody in this room,' continued Nick as he addressed the large congregation sat before him. 'Friends, family and loved ones, both past and present, we've all been lucky to have known Martha and we must live everyday with her in our hearts. May she rest in peace,' he concluded.

Next to speak was Ms Nolan's sister, Jacqui, who spoke of the 'unbreakable' love and sister bond she and Ms Nolan shared.
"Martha, my beautiful sister,' she said. 'You taught me everything I needed to know in life. I didn't always see you, but I always knew you were there.
"Growing up with you was like having a built-in best friend. From sharing secrets, to late night talks, we have been through it all together. Through thick and thin, a sister's love is consistent. We know each others quirks, dreams and fears. The bond between us sisters is unique and unbreakable.'
While saying to goodbye to her sister one final time, Jacqui thanked Ms Nolan for making her life brighter, for the 'countless' memories and for always loving her.
"So here's to the sisters, the ones who make life brighter, who know you best and who love you the most. Cheers to the laughter, the tears and the countless memories that were made.
"You will be in my heart forever Martha,' concluded Jacqui as applause erupted around the cathedral with not a dry eye in sight.
Investigations in the US are still continuing into Ms Nolan's sudden death. Authorities have said that a post mortem carried out by the Suffolk County Medical Examiner's Office was inconclusive and they are awaiting further test results to decide the direction of their investigation.
In the days following the discovery of Ms Nolan's body, detectives in the US said there was "no evidence of violence" in her death. However, the circumstances leading to her death remain a mystery with investigations by the Suffolk County Medical Examiner's Office ongoing.
It is understood that Ms Nolan's family have been informed that a final autopsy report, including toxicological, histological and other testing, will take at least three months to complete.
A second opinion autopsy, requested by her family, was completed before Ms Nolan's remains were repatriated home to Ireland.
During her time living in the US, Ms Nolan set up East x East, a luxury brand for sunglasses, swimwear and resort wear for men and women.
She was also director of operations at investment firm K4 Capital and ran an Amazon fashion brand called Duper.
Ms Nolan's family have engaged high-profile criminal defence attorney, Arthur Aidala, to push for answers in relation to the police investigation into her death.

Styled By Niamh: Social media sensation Sian Walton on her not-so Simple Life

As a child, Irish social media star Sian Walton had a very different career in mind for herself – and became an influencer almost by accident. 'I am very much a big animal lover so I wanted to be a vet, but as I got older I hadn't a clue. 'I knew there was something out there for me, though influencing just wasn't a thing at the time,' Sian told Styled. Boohoo Chiffon Satin V Neck Maxi Dress – €29.00 Boohoo Suede tassel jacket €47.00 Boohoo Wide Fit Western Style Harness Detail Knee High Boots €34.00 Newbridge Silverware Dew Drop Oval Pendant with Mulberry Stone €50.00 She said inspiration first struck when she found herself adrift after leaving school. 'It was over 10 years ago. I was only 18 and had just left school, I didn't know what I wanted to do with my life. All my friends were in college, and I did a personal training course. 'I started sharing all my workouts, food and anything fitness related. A lot of gym selfies,' she laughed. Sian grew up in the north Dublin countryside but went to school in Loreto on the Green in the heart of the city centre. 'It was a journey every day, but I absolutely loved being in the city – especially growing up in the middle of nowhere basically. It was exciting and different.' Boohoo Morgan Wallen License Cowgirls Printed Oversized T-Shirt €15.20 V by VeryFringe Midi Skirt – Brown€45 Very COACH . Horse & Carriage Enamel Hinged Bangle Bracelet – Gold €125 But she confided, she didn't have many friends at school and ended up losing the few she had because of her hugely popular Instagram and Youtube accounts. 'It was seen as 'embarrassing' at the time. So that really pushed me, and I devoted all my time to posting online. 'I would post every single day. 'After 10 years I've definitely grown a thick skin. I used to be very shy and sensitive, and I've changed a lot by putting myself out there,' she admitted. 'There have been times in the past where I have been upset over comments. Although it's not OK, I do think if you are getting negative comments – it just means you're doing something right!' Hollister Low-Rise Medium Wash Shortie Shorts € 45,95 Savida Maddie Rib Trim T-Shirt €12 However, she says YouTube is worse than Instagram for toxic comments. 'I remember getting a comment on my YouTube channel telling me to go drink bleach. I think I was around 20 at the time. That comment has always stuck with me, she admitted.' Sian – who credits her unusual name, which she 'loves', to her mum's influence – grew up as the youngest of three, with her older brother and sister now living abroad. Her father, Philip Walton, is a professional golfer who took the winning putt in the 1995 Ryder Cup, so it's little surprise that she loves to hit the links. Boohoo Pocket And Belt Detail Bandeau Denim Mini Dress €22.00 Very Burberry Oversized Sunglasses – Light Havana Women's Gucci @Brown Thomas Horsebit sandal €750 Hermes Eperon d'Or Bandana Twilly €315 'I do love to play golf – but just for fun! I definitely would love to play it more – I grew up around it. My dad has taught me a lot, and I absolutely love to go to the driving range with him.' The gym has, unsurprisingly, also been a huge part of her life over the last 10 years. 'I wouldn't call it a hobby, more of a lifestyle – I can't imagine my life without it. Not just for the physical benefits but mentally also. 'It's a complete escape for me and it always puts me in the best mood.' Boohoo Structured Satin Skater Mini Dress €32.50 Sian met her boyfriend and 'best friend', Brook Wright, seven years ago and she currently works front of house at his new venture in Swords, The Brook. 'We met in a nightclub in town and just hit it off from there. We are complete opposites if I'm honest! I'm probably a bit too laid back and he's super organised. 'They do say opposites attract. He has always pushed me to be my absolute best and to believe in myself at times when I haven't,' she said of his support. V by VeryDenim Co-Ord High Waist Jeans – Mid Was €52 Boohoo Studded Felt Detail Western Cowboy Hat €16.00 For now, she doesn't know what the future holds; she is just 'taking it day by day'. But despite her glamorous lifestyle, she does see herself on a farm one day. 'Growing up we had hens, a horse, donkey, cats, the list goes on… but I have always wanted to be on TV as well, so who knows!' The Simple Life Say what you will but fun fashion peaked in the early 2000's. And few people encapsulated bright, bubbly fashion like the glamorous double act that was Paris Hilton and Nicole Richie in their mega successful reality show The Simple Life. Pairing neon bikini tops and bandanas with the shortest of denim shorts wasn't out of the question, and flip-flops, low-rise jeans, even high heels for a day on the farm was par for the course. Cowboy hats, hairbands, neck scarfs, and oversized, outrageous totes and sunglasses can all be used to give a nod to to the style icons if you don't feel like going full-Paris. I Dream of Jeanie V by Very Denim Co-Ord Asymmetric Waistcoat – Mid Wash €42 Sydney Sweeney's American Eagle jeans campaign has made denim the outfit du jour. Denim can be both fun and functional – its beauty lies in the fact it's versatile enough to be styled for any occasion. The one thing to consider when choosing a perfect pair of jeans is that body type is all-important. Asos Nike Basketball NBA Unisex LA Lakers Lebron James jersey vest in yellow €83.99. Levis 501® 90's Jeans €84.00 Skinny jeans are flattering for most body types, whilst barrel-leg jeans work particularly well for pear and hourglass silhouettes. Flares can be tricky to pull off so approach with an abundance of caution. But luckily for us ladies, high-waisted jeans have made a massive comeback and are generally flattering for all shapes and sizes. Fest-Fabulous The festival season is in full swing with Electric Picnic just around the corner. So here is a handy guide to all weather festival essentials. Go wild and express yourself – just don't forget to pack a good pair of wellies. It's a time when you can let your hair down and discard the office day wear in favour of something fun, like hot pants and a cowboy hat. Flowy skirts and oversized shirts and sweaters look great in festival photos, and they have the added benefit of keeping you warm if it gets a bit nippy-which let's face it, it usually does in Ireland. A good jacket is essential, preferably one with a hood, while a tote bag fulfils a dual purpose – they hold a lot and look great in pics. Above all, don't forget to pack SPF and sunglasses. The first is always essential and the sunglasses – well, hopefully you'll need them! Why police were called to first Dunnes Stores opening BETWEEN the weekly food shops and bargain fashion - Dunnes Stores is a staple retailer in Irish households. But this wasn't always the case, and when the initial branch of the shop opened its doors in 1944 it caused quite the stir On March 31 of the year, Ben Dunne opened the first ever Dunnes Stores on St Patrick's Street in Co Cork. Locals quickly learned of the grand opening and flooded into the store in what the retailer's archives recall as a 'shopping frenzy.' The bargain clothing on sale inside the new store at 'pre-war prices' was one of the factors cited for the buzz. During the chaos a window was forced in and Gardai were called to the scene. Cops worked to deal with the eager crowds and keep shoppers calm and safe before they made it into the store for their first Dunnes experience. Fast forward some 80 years, the business now employs over 18,000 people and although an opening of a Dunnes branch hasn't caused quite as much stir since the very first one, it has cemented its place as one of the nation's leading retailers.
