We've all got automotive dreams and, for some of us, those dreams start before we're even able to drive. Once we get that license in our hot little hands, we'd pick up a dream machine that would make the world our easily accessible oyster.
That didn't happen for a lot of us. Myself? As a girl who listened to indie music and read too much, I thought I'd get a quirky classic Volkswagen as a first car. My dad and I plunked $700 on a rusted out bag of German bolts in the form of an unloved, rusty Karmann Ghia. As soon as the flatbed arrived in our driveway, my naturally nervous mother said no. Absolutely not.
Looking back, it was a totally fair call. Having driven a Ghia, I can say with coincidence I would have gotten in trouble in that little coke can of a car pretty quickly. Instead I got my mom's hand-me-down 1995 Dodge Avenger. And you know what? It was the right choice. Good call Patricia Marquis. If your ignore the whole teenager trying to pay insurance in pricy Michigan on what was laughingly called a "sports car" by State Farm, it was the perfect teenager car: low, slow and no back seat for shenanigans. It was just right. Sometimes, Mama knows best, it seems. We asked you about your dreams deferred and got a lot of comments. Here's a few of our favorites.

'89 Dodge Caravan. At first this seemed cataclysmically awful, and I felt I was sent down a path to become a basement incel.
But it ended up being the gift that kept on giving. Vans are about parties and life and road trips. When all the cool girls wanted to go road tripping with a safe driver, who did they call? Or nerd girls whom I liked better anyway. But the point is: me. They all called me. Clubs, Tijuana. Camping trips out to the mountains or desert. You name it.
This was well before the age of Uber and such. A minivan in high school and college are the keys to a rich social life.
And the cherry on top is this thing had a manual transmission. Always a conversation starter in a minivan.

really really really wanted a 2nd gen Prelude, Talon or CRX. Actually found a 1990 CRX for $500 in the classifieds (remember those?) and called immediately, and the phone was busy and I had to get to school.
Called the second I got home and it was sold. Still sore about that.
Anyways, ended up with my dad's hand me down 89 ranger, had a 5 speed and it was brown and had a 302 with a cam in it so it wasnt a total loss.

i just got my first car, it's a 2014 Mazda 3 sedan. however, i wanted this beautiful 1977 buick Electra which was beige, everything inside and outside was beige, and it had the 3speed automatic slush box peak 70s imo. that or a '71 bug which was melon green and had the 4speed manual that mom also said no to :(

I wanted to buy my friends Grand National in 1995. He only wanted $3,000 for it. It was high mileage but my dad (who's a mechanic) said no. Instead he gave me a 1984 Camaro......with 145,000 miles on it. Everyone in my family of 3 siblings had owned it at some point. My friends GN blew up 5 days after I passed up on it and that Camaro lasted me 3 years and 45,000 more miles.

I started driving in ~1995. I should state for the record that I am a Late-Gen X Kid with decidedly Boomer tastes. I don't know why, I can't help it, and neither can you.
Anyway, I really loved (and still love) the look of the C3 Corvette. I know it's a bad opinion, but I won't lie to you all. I desperately wanted a C3 Corvette.
What I actually got was a 1985 Honda Accord Coupe in the hatchback configuration. It was painted a color that was probably billed as "Champagne" with a reddish-brown interior and a slushbox. It ran for years, all the way out to 250,000 miles.

WHAT I WANTED: My aunt's neighbor's 1967 Mustang hardtop, baby blue with a black vinyl roof and wire wheel covers. It looked like a secretary's car but it had a 390 under the hood and was a real sleeper.
The owner was asking $1800 for the car in 1981, but i was right out of HS and did not have the cash for the car nor the insurance.
WHAT I GOT: In 1983, i bought a 1973 Pontiac Ventura with a 250ci straight six and a two-speed automatic. I purchased the car in the parking lot of an Acme supermarket in South Philly from a guy who never confirmed he was the actual owner of the car. i drove the car for a year before the engine block cracked when the temperature plunged to below zero and stayed there for almost a week.

I was lucky. I didn't know what I wanted, and I got a '63 Rambler Classic 4-door.
Mitt Romney might have seen his as a penalty box, but I considered mine a blank canvas. Which, considering it was off-white with a tan interior, wasn't far off the mark. I went to work on it, and it led me down the road of innocent cars turned into serious hot rods. I still enjoy that trip.

I got my license in 2007 and wanted an RSX-S. I thought it was the coolest car ever when it came out a few years prior, but ended up with my grandma's 1998 VW Cabrio instead. I did end up buying an RSX later on once I was out of college and it was every bit as great as I thought it would be.

In 1971 I turned 16 and got a 1963 Valiant convertible. It served up lots of fun for years. I had wanted a BMW 1600 that was available, but I didn't realize I could afford it. I probably dodged a bullet.

I loved cars with fins, so I really wanted a '59 Cadillac convertible. That or a '66 Lincoln Continental convertible with suicide door.
I did get a car with fins, though. My first car was a '60 Chevy El Camino that my Dad dragged home from behind a bowling alley. He and I bodged it together, and I drove it all through high school and part of college.
I eventually traded it for a "69 Lincoln Continental hardtop, so I did get the suicide doors I craved.
Still haven't gotten the '59 Caddy, but hope springs eternal.

I'm not really sure what I wanted for myself to be honest. My family had had several Corvettes over the years (73, 77, and an 84, the 73 before I was even born), and I was a fanboy for the 63 split window, though I knew we'd likely never get one of those. I had been bugging them about getting a chrome bumpered C3 for a while as the next Vette for the household. We went and looked at an orange 71 when I was 14 and my parents pulled the trigger on it. I ended up driving it part of the way home on my learner's permit with my mom and effectively called squatter's rights on it and it was "unofficially" my car from that point on. Granted I did a lot of work on it with my dad. It was probably more "officially" the family "fun" car, as we pretty much always had at least one fun vehicle in the garage growing up, but I drove it to high school and college and still have it to this day almost 25 years later.

Unrealistically, I wanted a 2005 Mustang GT. I turned 16 in 2008, so these were three years out and selling hot. I did not have the cash to purchase a new-ish Mustang.
Realistically, I had my eyes on a Chevy HHR. I liked the retro wagon look! Alas, the interior is deceivingly cramped for such a large greenhouse. Also could not find one in above average condition for the price range

Which let to me getting an 80 Mustang coupe, then an 85 Mustang coupe, then an 89 convertible (still have) and a 96 convertible (also still have).
...yet no 65 still.

Wanted a '65 Mustang coupe or late 80's Camaro IROC-Z. What I got was a hand-me-down 1985 Chevrolet Cavalier with a leaky sunroof. It was still decent performance for a Cavalier as it was a Z24 with the 2.8L V6 and wider tires. Then, as an adult, I looked up how much horsepower it actually had and was surprised it was barely over 100.

I wanted an SN95 era Mustang Cobra in that teal/blue/purple iridescent paint scheme. I wanted that Mustang right up until I was 20 and I got job where one coworker had an early aughts GT and another got a new C6. While that may not be a fair comparison, my first ride in that C6 effectively killed my love for the Mustang.
What I got was a brown Taurus wagon. Considering my lack of coolness and social circle at the time, I definitely think I got in more shenanigans because of the wagon capacity than I would have in a fast car that probably would have just been crashed or license quickly suspended.

Waymo is winning in San Francisco
The self-driving car service Waymo has been active in San Francisco for 20 months and has already captured 27% of the city's rideshare market, according to new research compiled by Mary Meeker's Bond venture capital firm. That rapid progress suggests the mainstreaming of self-driving car service could happen faster than once thought. In my experience as a frequent Waymo user, the service can cost up to a third more than Uber, depending on demand. But in some ways it's worth it. While Uber was originally meant to make ridesharing a friendlier and more social experience than taxi service, being alone can have its perks, too. A Waymo One ride can be a time of quiet contemplation, or even meditation, slotted in between meetings or other tasks. With Uber or a taxi service, you also get a different experience each time. The quality, condition, and odor of the vehicle varies from ride to ride, as does the driver's level of sociability, attitude, behavior, and language. Waymo service, by contrast, is largely the same every time: same Jaguar SUV, same neutral smell, same mellow, ambient music (which you can shut off if you want to). Note that Waymo's Jaguar I-PACE SUVs, after being decked out in computers and sensors, probably cost between $130,000 and $150,000, Motor Trend estimates. So Waymo could adopt less-expensive, and less-posh, vehicles as it scales to drive down costs. Riders may feel more in control in a self-driving car (sounds counterintuitive, I know). In an Uber, 'my car, my rules' governs a number of aspects of the ride. I wouldn't ask an Uber driver to change or turn off the music in his own car, for example. In a Waymo 'you control the music and don't feel judged by being on a call or whatever you do,' Das tells Fast Company. And while Waymo rides may take a little longer than Uber rides to get to their destination, there's evidence that Waymo rides are safer than human-driven cars. Waymo researchers studied more than 56.7 million miles of driving and found that by removing the human driver Waymo achieves a 92% reduction in crashes involving injuries among pedestrians, an 82% reduction in crashes with cyclists, and an 82% reduction in crashes involving motorcyclists. Yes, Waymo might have captured a quarter of the market here because San Francisco is a tech city. 'This may be due to a combination of the region's tech-focused culture, busy workers staying heads-down on work or sensitive calls, or simply a preference for fewer social interactions,' Jeremiah Owyang of Blitzscaling Ventures tells Fast Company. 'Standardized quality in a private setting is outperforming a variable, faster human driver—a physical representation of automation.' And don't get me wrong. I've had my share of problems with Waymo. On at least two occasions, in less-traveled parts of the city, a Waymo car has dropped me off several blocks from my destination. And, at least in San Francisco, you still can't take a Waymo to the airport (the company started servicing its first airport, Phoenix Sky Harbor, in 2022). Still, the differences that matter between the self-driving and human-driven experiences are becoming clearer to more consumers. And some of the ones that really matter seem to favor Waymo. Waymo currently offers rides in the San Francisco Bay Area and down the peninsula and Silicon Valley. The state of California just gave it permission to offer rides in San Jose. The company, which spun off from parent Google 10 years ago, also operates in Los Angeles, Phoenix, and Austin. Across these markets, Waymo says its cars have covered more than 33 million miles. In Austin, Waymo operates through a partnership with Uber. Riders hail a self-driving car through the Uber app. Within its 37-square-mile service area in Austin, Waymo accounts for nearly 20% of Uber rides. Waymo was valued at $45 billion after its most recent funding round of $5.6 billion last October. The company reports its revenue under parent company Alphabet's 'Other Bets' category, which showed $450 million in revenue and an operating loss of $1.2 billion for the first quarter of 2025. Uber's New Shuttle Is Basically a Bus, but Worse
Beyond the jokes about Uber inventing bus lines are serious questions about what its shuttle service will mean for struggling transit systems, air quality, and congestion. Every few years, a Silicon Valley gig-economy company announces a 'disruptive' innovation that looks a whole lot like a bus. Uber rolled out Smart Routes a decade ago, followed a short time later by the Lyft Shuttle of its biggest competitor. Even Elon Musk gave it a try in 2018 with the 'urban loop system' that never quite materialized beyond the Vegas Strip. And does anyone remember Chariot? Now it's Uber's turn again. The ride-hailing company recently announced Route Share, in which shuttles will travel dozens of fixed routes, with fixed stops, picking up passengers and dropping them off at fixed times. Amid the inevitable jokes about Silicon Valley once again discovering buses are serious questions about what this will mean for struggling transit systems, air quality, and congestion. Uber promised the program, which rolled out in seven cities at the end of May, will bring 'more affordable, more predictable' transportation during peak commuting hours. 'Many of our users, they live in generally the same area, they work in generally the same area, and they commute at the same time,' Sachin Kansal, the company's chief product officer, said during the company's May 14 announcement. 'The concept of Route Share is not new,' he admitted — though he never used the word 'bus.' Instead, pictures of horse-drawn buggies, rickshaws, and pedicabs appeared onscreen. CEO Dara Khosrowshahi was a bit more forthcoming when he told The Verge the whole thing is 'to some extent inspired by the bus.' The goal, he said, 'is just to reduce prices to the consumer and then help with congestion and the environment.' But Kevin Shen, who studies this sort of thing at the Union of Concerned Scientists, questions whether Uber's 'next-gen bus' will do much for commuters or the climate. 'Everybody will say, 'Silicon Valley's reinventing the bus again,'' Shen said. 'But it's more like they're reinventing a worse bus.' Five years ago, the Union of Concerned Scientists released a report that found ride-share services emit 69 percent more planet-warming carbon dioxide and other pollutants than the trips they displace — largely because as many as 40 percent of the miles traveled by Uber and Lyft drivers are driven without a passenger, something called 'deadheading.' That climate disadvantage decreases with pooled services like UberX Share — but it's still not much greener than owning and driving a vehicle, the report noted, unless the car is electric. Beyond the iffy climate benefit lie broader concerns about what this means for the transit systems in New York, San Francisco, Chicago, Philadelphia, Dallas, Boston, and Baltimore — and the people who rely on them. 'Transit is a public service, so a transit agency's goal is to serve all of its customers, whether they're rich or poor, whether it's the maximum profit-inducing route or not,' Shen said. The entities that do all of this come with accountability mechanisms — boards, public meetings, vocal riders — to ensure they do what they're supposed to. 'Barely any of that is in place for Uber.' This, he said, is a pivot toward a public-transit model without public accountability. Compounding the threat, Philadelphia and Dallas have struggling transit systems at risk of defunding. The situation is so dire in Philly that it may cut service by nearly 45 percent on July 1 amid a chronic financial crisis. (That, as one Reddit user pointed out, would be good news for Uber.) Meanwhile, the federal government is cutting support for public services, including transit systems — many of which still haven't fully recovered from COVID-era budget crunches. Though ridership nationwide is up to 85 percent of pre-pandemic levels, Bloomberg News recently estimated that transit systems across the country face a $6 billion budget shortfall. So it's easy to see why companies like Uber see a business opportunity in public transit. Khosrowshahi insists Uber is 'in competition with personal car ownership,' not public transportation. 'Public transport is a teammate,' he told The Verge. But a study released last year by the University of California, Davis found that in three California cities, over half of all ride-hailing trips didn't replace personal cars, they replaced more sustainable modes of getting around, like walking, public transportation, and bicycling. And then there's the fact cities like New York grapple with chronic congestion and don't need more vehicles cluttering crowded streets. During Uber's big announcement, Kansal showed a video of one possible Route Share ride in the Big Apple. It covered about 3 miles from Midtown to Lower Manhattan, which would take about 30 minutes and cost $13. But here's the thing: The addresses are served by three different subway lines. It is possible to commute between those two points, avoid congestion, and arrive sooner, for $2.90. So, yes, Uber Route Share is cheaper than Uber's standard car service (which has gotten 7.2 percent pricier in the past year) — but Route Share is far from the most efficient or economical way to get around in the biggest markets it's launching in. 'If anything,' Shen said, 'it's reducing transit efficiency by gumming up those same routes with even more vehicles.' Ford's Hot Hatch Is Now Officially History
The end is here for Ford's last hot hatch as the company confirmed to Motor1 that every factory build slot for the Focus ST is spoken for. "All Focus ST factory orders until the end of production have now been reserved," European communications manager Finn Thomasen said. Dealers across the Continent may still have a few unclaimed cars hiding in back lots, but once those are gone-and when Focus production stops in November-the book will officially close on Ford's 45-year hot-hatch chapter. The Focus joins a growing list of Ford passenger cars already in the rear-view mirror. The Fiesta bowed out in 2023, the Mondeo in 2022, and the tiny Ka back in 2020. Without them, Ford's European portfolio is dominated by crossovers such as the Puma and Kuga. The shift has taken a bite out of sales: through April, Ford moved 149,601 vehicles in the EU, U.K., and EFTA markets-down 2.2% year-over-year and less than a third of Volkswagen's haul over the same period. Even Hyundai and Kia have pulled ahead, underscoring how much ground Ford has ceded without its affordable hatchbacks. Yes, the seventh-generation Mustang still flies the performance flag, but it's hardly a volume play. EU taxes punish engines bigger than two liters, dogging the 5.0-liter V-8, while the smaller 2.3-liter EcoBoost was pulled from European order books at the end of 2020. The pony car, therefore, lives on as a niche halo, not a substitute for the daily-drivable, budget-friendly thrills once delivered by ST-badged Fiestas and Focuses. Whether Ford ever revisits the hot-hatch formula likely depends on batteries, not boost pressure. Former Ford of Europe boss-now VW sales chief-Martin Sanders has hinted that the Blue Oval could tap further into Volkswagen's MEB electric platform, the foundation for the forthcoming Explorer and Capri EVs. VW has already promised an electric GTI; a battery-fueled Fiesta ST or Focus ST revival isn't unthinkable if the economics line up. For now, though, enthusiasts must look to the used market or pivot to rival brands still flying the internal-combustion hot-hatch flag. The Fiesta Supersport of 1980 lit the fuse; the Escort RS, Fiesta XR2, and decades of ST variants kept the fire roaring. With the Focus ST's curtain call, the combustion-powered Ford hot hatch becomes history. What replaces it, if anything, will almost certainly hum rather than howl.
