Coral Reef dominant as it cruises to third consecutive GMAC softball championship
Losing a starting pitcher to injury can sometimes derail a team's season.
Coral Reef's softball team didn't let that happen.
Despite losing one of its two regular starters, junior Erin Zambrano, to injury last month, the Barracudas have endured and remained one of the top teams in South Florida thanks to their depth and a core of players who have stuck together for the past four years.
On Thursday afternoon, Coral Reef showed why it is still one of the more dominant teams in the state by blanking longtime rival Miami Palmetto 15-0 in three innings in the GMAC championship game at South Dade High School.
The Barracudas (17-5) won their third consecutive GMAC title and are looking to solidify their seeding in a tough Region 4-7A bracket when the district playoffs begin on April 28.
Zambrano, who suffered a stress fracture in her cervical spine, could be back in time for either districts or regionals according to Coral Reef coach Zach Segal. But junior lefty Quinley Wylie, who split starts with Zambrano in the past, has thrived as the Barracudas' ace.
'We've had to play around with some stuff to save our pitcher's arm,' Segal said. 'But (Wylie) has been a bulldog. We went to the Kissimmee (Klassic) recently with the mindset that we wanted to at least win three of the five games we played. She was like 'No, I'm pitching all five.' And she did.'
Wylie didn't have to pitch much on Thursday against Palmetto (8-12), going just three innings before the 15-mercy rule took effect. To rest Wylie's arm for the upcoming postseason run, senior infielder Avery Clegg pitched during Coral Reef's 14-0 win over Hialeah and 15-0 win over Hialeah-Miami Lakes in the quarterfinals and semifinals respectively.
Clegg and Wylie have been huge at the plate as well for the Barracudas and led the team in hitting in Zambrano's absence.
Junior Brianna Fields' three-run home run in the second highlighted the offensive barrage for Coral Reef. Freshman Aliyah Quinones belted a two-out triple in the first that ignited the Barracudas' offense.
All nine Barracudas starters got a hit and scored a run.
Coral Reef has leaned on the experience of players like Wylie and Fields, who have been on the team for the past four seasons. As of this week, the Barracudas stand to be the No. 2 seed in Region 4-7A behind Lake Worth Park Vista and just ahead of projected No. 3-seed and defending state champion Davie Western.
The Barracudas finish the regular season with a game Saturday against Fort Myers Bishop Verot before playing as the top seed in District 16-7A.
'This whole group has been in and knows our culture and follows it,' Segal said. 'Pitching and defense have been our strong points. We hit the ball like we could, but we have to keep it going.'

Miami-Dade County Public Schools and the Greater Miami Athletic Conference honored its best and brightest once again this week at its annual Scholar-Athlete Awards banquet at Miami Dade College's North campus. Over 75 scholar-athletes were presented with scholarship awards totaling $47,500 at the event and recognized for their achievements in athletics and in the classroom. Its Platinum awards for $2,000 went to Hialeah's Nicholas Navarro and South Miami's Kate Ai. Its Gold awards, worth $1,500, went to Braddock's Andrew Sarmiento and Miami Beach's Madison Newman. Its Silver awards for $1,000 went to Goleman's Eddie Molliner and Braddock's Braelen Cintron. Its Bronze Awards for $500 each went to American's Derrius Black and Sunset's Paula Villacreses. ▪ The Orange Bowl Committee presented its Platinum awards ($2,000) to Miami Beach's Emmet Berman and Coral Park's Carmen Dragustinovis. Nationally-ranked Doral Academy softball team moves closer to state final four
Doral Academy's softball team has taken things to a higher level this season. The Firebirds are 28-1 following Tuesday's 10-0 mercy-rule win at home over Coconut Creek Monarch in a Region 4-6A semifinal. They are ranked No. 4 nationally by MaxPreps. And just how dominant have they been this postseason? Since the district playoffs began, Doral has even allowed a hit. Senior Meagan Villazon, who stepped up and became the team's ace in the pitching circle this season, pitched her fifth no-hitter in a start of four or more innings this season on Tuesday, striking out 10 of the 15 batters she faced. She also hit a two-run double to help Doral break open a close game with five runs in the third and three more in the fourth. Alondra Aldebol-Borrero went 3 for 3 with a triple and an RBI while Anabela Abdullah went 2 for 4 with a home run and three RBI. Sarah Breaux went 2 for 2 with a home run, a triple and an RBI. On Thursday, the Firebirds will next host the winner of the South Plantation-West Boca Raton semifinal which will be played on Wednesday night, in the Region 4-6A final at Doral. MORE RESULTS ▪ Region 4-2A semifinal - Westminster Christian 9, Oxbridge Academy 8: The Warriors (19-7-1) rallied from an 8-1 deficit after five innings to keep their season alive and advance to the region final. Gigi Khoury led the comeback, finishing with a home run, two doubles and six RBI. Mya Rodgers also had a two-run double and Jasmine Armenteros went 2 for 4 with an RBI. Westminster Christian will next host Florida Christian on Thursday in the Region 4-2A final. ▪ Region 4-2A semifinal - Florida Christian 4, Fort Pierce John Carroll 3 (10): Sienna Gillen pitched all 10 innings, allowing two runs on four hits and two walks while striking out nine to lead the Patriots (19-8). Kianny Gil had two RBI and Shaun Fernandez had two hits. ▪ Region 4-5A semifinal - St. Thomas Aquinas 8, Pembroke Pines Charter 7: The Raiders (15-12) hung on for the win at home and will host Stuart South Fork on Thursday night in the regional final. Yenisett Yescas finished with five RBI for Pines Charter (12-15) and hit a bases-clearing double with one out in seventh to cut Aquinas' lead to 8-7. But the Jaguars were unable to drive Yescas home as the rally fell short. ▪ Region 4-7A semifinal - Western 3, Lake Worth Park Vista 0: Ali Solo gave up four hits over seven shutout innings, striking out five and walking one to lead the Wildcats (19-5-1). Analie Diaz hit a two-run home run and Katarina Kuma had an RBI. ▪ Region 4-7A semifinal - West Broward 11, Coral Reef 1 (6): Alivia Artanis went 2 for 4 with four RBI and Natalia Solorzano hit a three-run home run to lead the Bobcats (18-7) to the mercy-rule win over the top-seeded Barracudas (20-7) on Tuesday at Coral Reef. Ava DiFato and Victoria Carmona each had two hits and scored three runs for West Broward. DiFato also had two stolen bases. Sierra Johnson and Brianna Fields each hit doubles and Marley Blanco went 1 for 2 for Coral Reef. Sophomore Cheyanne Chaffin gave up one run in six innings, struck out six and walked three. The Bobcats will next face defending state champion Western on Thursday in the regional final. ▪ Region 4-4A semifinal - American Heritage 6, Somerset Academy 5 ▪ Region 4-4A semifinal - Key West 2, Archbishop McCarthy 1 ▪ Region 4-3A semifinal - Coral Springs Charter 12, St. Brendan 0 (5): Gio Gurgel went 2 for 2 with a home run and five RBI to lead the Panthers (23-3) over the Sabres (15-12). Mia Rodriguez and Addi Brown each had two RBI. Courtney Wahlbrink had two hits and an RBI triple and threw four no-hit innings, striking out seven. Coral Springs Charter will host Somerset Silver Palms on Thursday in the regional final. ▪ Region 4-3A semifinal - Somerset Silver Palms 5, Cardinal Gibbons 1 ▪ Region 4-1A semifinal - Schoolhouse Prep 12, AIE Charter 2 (5): Valeria Vazquez had three hits including two doubles and an RBI. All-County Sports Hialeah Gardens' Peralta and Palmetto's Slazas are Dade Badminton Players of the Year Miami Palmetto High School's Katarina Slazas won the Greater Miami Athletic Conference badminton girls' singles championship at Braddock High School in Miami, Florida on Wednesday, April 23, 2025. adiaz@ Palmetto's Katarina Slazas dominated the badminton scene in Miami-Dade County for all four years of high school. It was fitting Slazas, a senior, capped her career with a fourth consecutive GMAC girls' singles championship. Meanwhile, Hialeah Gardens' Joshua Peralta gradually overcame a longtime nemesis to secure his first GMAC boys' singles championship. As such, Slazas and Peralta are the Miami Herald's Badminton Players of the Year. Slazas, who also played soccer during her career at Palmetto, wins the award for the fourth consecutive season after dominant victories throughout the season as she went unbeaten once again and helped the Panthers win their fourth consecutive GMAC team title. Slazas beat Hialeah Gardens' Annabelle Calles 21-5, 21-1 in the final and None of her opponents in this year's tournament reached double-digits in points against her. Slazas, who lost her first match and then was never beaten since, became one of the most dominant players in the sport in recent memory. She was one of three division champions for Palmetto. 'I can't believe it's over,' said Slazas after winning her GMAC title. 'I'm really grateful to coach (David) Zarco. I couldn't have made it this far without his help.' But Peralta flipped the result at GMAC, beating Villalobos in three sets, 18-21, 21-11, 21-11. Peralta said after winning GMAC that the loss at the Youth Fair tournament was a turning point for him. 'Last year, I lost and got second place and was very disappointed with myself and unmotivated,' Peralta said at GMAC. 'But I kept on playing and training and even though I lost to him at Youth Fair, I had another battle I had to go through. I won, but I feel like it was bittersweet. I hope I can come back and win it again next year.' COACH OF THE YEAR As Palmetto won its fourth consecutive GMAC title, its coach David Zarco was grateful to see how his team responded from a tough challenge from runner-up Coral Park at this year's meet. Palmetto finished with 17 points and only six points ahead of the Rams. In recognition of that triumph, Zarco is once again the Miami Herald's Badminton Coach of the Year.
