Miami Palmetto High School's Katarina Slazas won the Greater Miami Athletic Conference badminton girls' singles championship at Braddock High School in Miami, Florida on Wednesday, April 23, 2025.

Palmetto's Katarina Slazas dominated the badminton scene in Miami-Dade County for all four years of high school.
It was fitting Slazas, a senior, capped her career with a fourth consecutive GMAC girls' singles championship.
Meanwhile, Hialeah Gardens' Joshua Peralta gradually overcame a longtime nemesis to secure his first GMAC boys' singles championship.
As such, Slazas and Peralta are the Miami Herald's Badminton Players of the Year.
Slazas, who also played soccer during her career at Palmetto, wins the award for the fourth consecutive season after dominant victories throughout the season as she went unbeaten once again and helped the Panthers win their fourth consecutive GMAC team title.
Slazas beat Hialeah Gardens' Annabelle Calles 21-5, 21-1 in the final and None of her opponents in this year's tournament reached double-digits in points against her.
Slazas, who lost her first match and then was never beaten since, became one of the most dominant players in the sport in recent memory. She was one of three division champions for Palmetto.
'I can't believe it's over,' said Slazas after winning her GMAC title. 'I'm really grateful to coach (David) Zarco. I couldn't have made it this far without his help.'

Peralta, meanwhile, had lost the past two major tournaments to Coral Park's Leandro Villalobos, a former GMAC champion who beat Peralta at this year's Youth Fair tournament.
But Peralta flipped the result at GMAC, beating Villalobos in three sets, 18-21, 21-11, 21-11.
Peralta said after winning GMAC that the loss at the Youth Fair tournament was a turning point for him.
'Last year, I lost and got second place and was very disappointed with myself and unmotivated,' Peralta said at GMAC. 'But I kept on playing and training and even though I lost to him at Youth Fair, I had another battle I had to go through. I won, but I feel like it was bittersweet. I hope I can come back and win it again next year.'
COACH OF THE YEAR
As Palmetto won its fourth consecutive GMAC title, its coach David Zarco was grateful to see how his team responded from a tough challenge from runner-up Coral Park at this year's meet.
Palmetto finished with 17 points and only six points ahead of the Rams.
In recognition of that triumph, Zarco is once again the Miami Herald's Badminton Coach of the Year.

Zarco has maintained a high standard for the Panthers, which has kept them as the top team in Miami-Dade County in recent years.

Dodgers Named 'Perfect Landing Spot' for Freddy Peralta Amid Trade Rumors

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. The Los Angeles Dodgers have been poised for a return to the World Series this year but some sudden cracks in the roster could be changing the calculus. The Dodgers hold just a single-game lead in the National League West division as their pitching staff continues to succumb to persistent injuries. The team has more than a dozen arms on the injured list, including high-profile stars like Blake Snell, Tyler Glasnow and Roki Sasaki. The Dodgers reinforced their rotation this past winter, but it hasn't helped them avoid the shortage. As a result, they could look to the midseason trade market for a blockbuster addition with Milwaukee Brewers ace Freddy Peralta suddenly at the center of trade rumors. Outlining the likely candidates for a move this season, FanSided Major League Baseball insider Robert Murray tabbed Peralta as one of the four names he expects to drive speculation over the next eight weeks. After that, his colleague Zach Pressnell drew a connection to the Dodgers. MILWAUKEE, WISCONSIN - MAY 06: Freddy Peralta #51 of the Milwaukee Brewers looks on from the dugout during the game against the Houston Astros at American Family Field on May 06, 2025 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.... (Photo by) More Fisher/Getty "Murray didn't link the righty to any team, but there's one franchise that checks all the boxes as the perfect landing spot for the talented ace: the Los Angeles Dodgers," Pressnell wrote. "The Dodgers are one of the only teams in the league that has continuously shown a willingness to go after massive trades like this." Peralta is enjoying a stellar season, with a 2.77 ERA and 66 strikeouts in his first 12 starts. And the Brewers have a history of selling high on their trade candidates, even with time left on their contracts, as shown by their recent moves to deal Josh Hader and Corbin Burnes. Pressnell noted the Dodgers are one of the few teams in the majors with a strong enough farm system to swing a deal for a bona fide ace like Peralta. So, if the Brewers are really willing to send him to a National League contender, the Dodgers could make sense as a landing spot. Boston Red Sox at Milwaukee Brewers odds, picks and predictions

Boston Red Sox at Milwaukee Brewers odds, picks and predictions The Boston Red Sox (27-30) and Milwaukee Brewers (28-28) wrap up their 3-game series Wednesday. First pitch from American Family Field in Milwaukee is set for 1:10 p.m. ET (MLB Network). Let's analyze BetMGM Sportsbook's MLB odds around the Red Sox vs. Brewers odds and make our expert MLB picks and predictions for the best bets. Season series: Brewers lead 2-0 After losing 3-2 in Monday's opener, the Red Sox lost 5-1 in extra innings to the Brewers on Tuesday to stretch their losing streak to 4 games. OF Ceddanne Rafaela scored Boston's only run on a wild pitch. RP Aroldis Chapman blew his first save of the season (1 IP, 1 ER, 2 H, 1 BB, 1 K), allowing the tying run in the ninth. RP Liam Hendriks took the loss in the 10th (1/3 IP, 3 ER (4 R), 2 H, 1 BB). The Brewers won 5-1 on Tuesday as a -105 home favorite. OF Sal Frelick's RBI single in the ninth forced extra innings, with DH Christian Yelich scoring the tying run. Yelich then hit a walk-off grand slam in the 10th, securing Milwaukee's third straight victory. Red Sox at Brewers projected starters RHP Brayan Bello vs. RHP Freddy Peralta Bello (2-1, 4.08 ERA) is making his eighth start. He has a 1.70 WHIP, 5.1 BB/9 and 6.9 K/9 in 35 1/3 innings. Last start: No-decision, 4 IP, 2 ER, 6 H, 1 BB, 7 K in 19-5 home victory against the Baltimore Orioles Friday 2025 away stats: 1-0, 4.22 ERA (10 2/3 IP, 5 ER), 1.60 WHIP, 6.8 K/9 in 2 starts Career vs. Brewers: 0-1, 5.00 ERA (9 IP, 5 ER), 1.56 WHIP, 7.0 K/9 in 2 appearances (1 start) Peralta (5-3, 2.55 ERA) is making his 12th start. He has a 1.12 WHIP, 3.5 BB/9 and 9.0 K/9 in 60 innings. Last start: No-decision, 4 1/3 IP, 1 ER (2 R), 2 H, 3 BB, 3 K in 6-5 loss at Pittsburgh Pirates Friday 2025 home stats: 3-0, 0.75 ERA (24 IP, 2 ER), 0.83 WHIP, 9.4 K/9 in 4 starts Only start vs. Red Sox: Loss, 5 2/3 IP, 4 ER, 5 H, 2 BB, 4 K in 5-3 road loss April 21, 2023 Win your fantasy baseball league with For decades, BHQ has been helping players just like you win! Moneyline (ML) : Red Sox +135 (bet $100 to win $135) | Brewers -160 (bet $160 to win $100) : Red Sox +135 (bet $100 to win $135) | Brewers -160 (bet $160 to win $100) Run line (RL)/Against the spread (ATS) : Red Sox +1.5 (-170) | Brewers -1.5 (+140) : Red Sox +1.5 (-170) | Brewers -1.5 (+140) Over/Under (O/U): 8 (O: -105 | U: -115) Red Sox at Brewers picks and predictions Prediction Brewers 4, Red Sox 2 PASS. Milwaukee (-160) will get the win on Wednesday, but I'll take the better odds on the run line. BET BREWERS -1.5 (+140). I like the Brewers to complete the sweep of the Red Sox on Wednesday afternoon. Milwaukee has won 5 of its last 6 home games, and Peralta has been outstanding, going 3-1 in his last 5 starts. He's undefeated with an 0.75 ERA in 4 starts at American Family Field. After Tuesday's walk-off loss, the Red Sox are likely feeling deflated. I'm backing the Brewers to finish their mini 3-game homestand on a high note before heading out on a 6-game road trip. BET UNDER 8 (-115). The Under has hit in 5 straight matchups between these 2 teams. The Red Sox have gone Under in 7 of their last 10 games, while the Brewers have hit the Under in 3 of their last 4 contests. Peralta has allowed just 1 ER in his last 3 home starts (16 innings), adding to the likelihood of a low-scoring game. Play our free daily Pick'em Challenge and win! Play now!
