Thailand prepares to sue Cambodian leaders over border conflict
BANGKOK: Thailand is preparing to take legal action against former Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen and his son, current Prime Minister Hun Manet, on charges of using military force to violate Thai sovereignty.
The move was announced by acting Prime Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Phumtham Vechayachai following a meeting of the National Security Council on Aug 18.
He stated that while border negotiations with Cambodia are ongoing, the government is taking action to address the impact of military aggression on Thai citizens and their property.
He explained that the Royal Thai Police and the Provincial Police Region 3 Command would serve as the central points for receiving complaints from both citizens and government agencies.
All cases will be forwarded to the Office of the Attorney General, which will act as the 'nation's lawyer' and oversee the lawsuits.
Phumtham clarified that the legal action would be strictly a domestic matter under Thai law, not an international one.
'We will not be filing a case with the International Court of Justice because we do not accept its jurisdiction,' he stated.
The acting Prime Minister justified the domestic approach, saying it was a necessary and appropriate measure to address attacks on Thai citizens and public property.
He added that a failure to act could open officials up to charges of negligence.
Phumtham warned that the lawsuits would be filed as 'cases of temporary detention,' meaning that arrest warrants would be served if the individuals named in the cases ever enter Thailand.
When asked by reporters about the possibility of tracking the financial networks of Cambodian politicians in Thailand, including Hun Sen, Phumtham said that the matter would be considered on a case-by-case basis and that it was not an appropriate topic for public discussion. - The Nation/ANN

Royal Thai Army says Cambodian army called to apologise over Chong An Ma incident
BANGKOK: Royal Thai Army spokesman Maj Gen Winthai Suvaree said on Wednesday (Aug 20) that he had received a phone call from a Cambodian army officer, apologising for the rogue behaviour of a Cambodian soldier who tried to disrupt a visit by Asean observers. Winthai explained that the Cambodian officer told him the soldier who caused the disruption during the Asean Interim Observation Team's visit to the Chong An Ma area in Ubon Ratchathani on Tuesday had been drunk. - Photo: The Nation/ANN On Tuesday, when the Thai side led the Asean IOT team to observe the Chong An Ma area, the Cambodian soldier confronted the team, complaining that he had not been informed in advance about the visit. Winthai said both countries had previously agreed to patrol the area unarmed. He added that when Cambodia had led foreign observers to visit the area earlier, Thai soldiers had been present quietly and did not disrupt the visit, merely complaining politely that they should have been informed in advance. Winthai concluded that since the Cambodian soldier was aggressive and very impolite, Thai soldiers had to remove him from the area during the Asean IOT team's visit. - The Nation/ANN

Military drone suspected in overnight blast near Warsaw
WARSAW: Polish authorities confirmed on Wednesday that an overnight explosion in the country's eastern region may have involved a military drone of unknown origin. Police received reports of a blast occurring in a cornfield near the village of Osiny, located approximately 100 kilometres from the capital Warsaw. The incident site lies in close proximity to both the Ukrainian and Belarusian borders. No casualties resulted from the explosion, though nearby buildings sustained broken windows from the blast impact. Regional prosecutor Grzegorz Trusiewicz stated that preliminary conclusions indicate the object was most likely a military drone. He clarified that investigators cannot currently determine the drone's origin or flight path. The Polish army officially confirmed that no violation of Polish airspace was detected during the previous night. Polish media outlets, citing defence ministry sources, suggested the object could have been a Russian Gerbera drone variant commonly used as a decoy in attacks against Ukraine. This incident follows a 2023 event where a Russian missile entered Polish airspace near the Ukrainian border during a Russian offensive. In 2022, a Ukrainian air defence missile landed on the Polish village of Przewodow near the border, resulting in two civilian fatalities. – AFP

Jordan FM says Israel killing all prospects for regional peace
MOSCOW: Jordan's foreign minister declared on Wednesday that Israel's military assault on Gaza has resulted in massacres and widespread starvation while systematically destroying any possibility for regional peace. His statement followed Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz authorising plans to capture Gaza City, a densely populated urban area housing hundreds of thousands of Palestinians in the northern part of the territory. The United Nations confirms that most of Gaza's population has been displaced since the conflict began, with many families forced to relocate multiple times. Jordanian Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi addressed Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov during their Moscow meeting by expressing hope to discuss efforts to end the aggression on Gaza, and the massacres and starvation that it is creating. He further emphasised the destructive impact of illegal measures that continue to undermine the two-state solution and kill all prospects for peace in the region. Safadi acknowledged Russia's diplomatic stance by telling Lavrov we value your clear position against the war and your demand for reaching a permanent ceasefire. Israel maintains that its military does not target civilians and denies implementing any policy of starvation within Gaza. The Israeli government's expansion of military operations has provoked widespread international condemnation and sparked significant domestic protests. Hamas's October 2023 attack on Israel resulted in the deaths of 1,219 people, mostly civilians, according to an AFP tally based on official figures. Israel's offensive has killed at least 62,064 Palestinians, most of them civilians, according to figures from the health ministry in Hamas-run Gaza, which the United Nations considers reliable. – AFP
