The Houston Astros are trying to keep up in the Major League Baseball arms race at the trade deadline, as big names get sent all over the league. Houston hasn't made a big move just yet, but its big swing could be just on the horizon. The Astros need pitching help, and they could be targeting San Diego Padres starter Dylan Cease in a deal. It's unclear if the Padres are going to actually move off of Cease at this moment, but the Astros are trying to get their hands on him according to MLB insider Mark Feinsand. 'The Astros are making a big push for Dylan Cease, with one source saying the starter is Houston's 'main target,'' Feinsand reported on X, formerly Twitter. The Padres are in a bit of an interesting spot as a team that is talented enough to contend for a playoff spot, but also one that could position itself as a seller at the deadline if it doesn't feel like it can compete with the Los Angeles Dodgers in the NL West. Cease would certainly get them a big return, especially from a contender desperate for pitching help like the Astros. Cease is having a difficult year in 2025, with just a 3-10 record in 22 starts for the Padres. He has a 4.79 ERA and has struggled with his control a bit, walking 47 batters in 118 1/3 innings. However, he is still a strikeout machine (153 strikeouts this season) and has the kind of stuff that teams covet in their starting rotation. The Astros will want to act fast at the trade deadline so that they don't miss out, especially after they have seen some of their chief rivals make big swings around the league. Earlier on Wednesday night, the Seattle Mariners reunited with star third baseman Eugenio Suarez in a trade with the Arizona Diamondbacks, which will make it that much harder to fend Seattle off in the AL West race. However, if the Astros can shore up one of their only weaknesses and add Cease to the rotation, they will immediately solidify themselves as one of the favorites to win the AL pennant this fall. LIV Golf has officially applied for Official World Golf Rankings points once more
It would appear that LIV Golf has no intentions of going anywhere. The tour is in its third year of operation and is running on all sorts of successes these days. At the time of this writing they are in play in Spain and being televised domestically on FS1, securing a television contract of that variety was just one challenge that they faced as they were getting off of the ground a few years ago. Advertisement LIV has different details than the PGA Tour and the ultimate takeaway from my perspective is that this is okay. Playing 54 holes, having teams, deploying a shotgun start... different is not necessarily. Different is just that, different. Ultimately these 'differences' have seemingly disallowed LIV from achieving something that they have long sought... official standing within the Official World Golf Ranking. OWGR is the point system that determines how players are generally ranked across the globe. These rankings have long served as the formula for invitations to major championships and things of the like so LIV not having them has seen their players fall dramatically and have to find alternative paths into those types of events. It appears that LIV is once again trying to establish an OWGR presence as the entity announced on Friday that LIV has applied once more. Inclusion for LIV in the OWGR would, quite frankly, be one of the biggest things to ever happen in the world of men's professional golf. Establishing OWGR points for LIV would offer points for players on the tour and therefore legitimize it in a way that has yet to have happened since this whole saga began. We are past the point of people using OWGR for conversational purposes (consider that for example Jon Rahm is listed at 68 and there is no 'world' where this is the case), but in practical matters they serve as the line in the sand. Advertisement Back to the point that we began this conversation with... this also suggests that LIV isn't going anywhere. Word of a pending merger broke over a year ago now, but the details of that remain as unknown as they were then. One would assume that if a merger were on the horizon that LIV would not feel the need to go this route. Perhaps it is part of a merger. Who knows at this point. Whatever the case... this stands to be another twist in professional golf. Time will tell. Update: 1:50pm ET LIV Golf Ceo Scott O'Neil released a statement on the league's application. We are hopeful the review and approval process can progress ahead of the 2026 major season.' We will see what happens next.

New York also signed left-handed reliever Richard Lovelady to a one-year deal and selected the contract of outfielder Travis Jankowski from Triple-A Syracuse. Both were available for the opener of a four-game series against Atlanta. Advertisement Acuña, the younger brother of Braves star Ronald Acuña Jr., was optioned to Syracuse along with right-handed reliever Tyler Zuber following Sunday night's 7-1 loss at Philadelphia. Before that game, the Mets demoted another touted youngster to Syracuse: catcher Francisco Alvarez. New York had lost eight of nine going into Monday, falling a game behind the first-place Phillies in the NL East. Acuña, acquired from Texas in 2023 for three-time Cy Young Award winner Max Scherzer, has scuffled lately at the plate after hitting .308 with six steals to earn NL rookie of the month honors for March/April. The 23-year-old has slumped to a .241 batting average and largely been relegated to pinch running and defensive-replacement duties. He is expected to receive regular playing time at Syracuse. Advertisement In other news, ace pitcher Kodai Senga, speaking through a translator, told reporters his injured right hamstring feels 'great' and he hopes to throw off a mound soon. Senga, injured covering first base June 12 against Washington, believes a rehab assignment is 'on the horizon.' After being limited to one start during the 2024 regular season because of shoulder and calf injuries, Senga was brilliant in his first 13 starts this year, going 7-3 with a 1.47 ERA. Jankowski signed a minor league contract with New York on June 10. He is playing on his third major league team in 2025, after spending time with the Chicago White Sox and Tampa Bay Rays. He received a spring training invite from the Chicago Cubs but was released on March 12. Jankowski appeared in 43 games for the Mets in 2022. He played college ball at Stony Brook University, located on Long Island less than 40 miles from Citi Field. Advertisement Lovelady had been pitching at Triple-A St. Paul in the Minnesota Twins organization before getting released last week. The 29-year-old reliever had a 1.31 ERA in 19 outings. Lovelady made two appearances for Toronto in March and also has pitched for the Royals, Rays, Athletics and Cubs during a six-year career. He is 5-13 with a 5.26 ERA and three saves in 110 games, holding left-handed hitters to a .232 batting average. Right-hander Frankie Montas is expected to be reinstated from the 60-day injured list Tuesday to make his Mets debut. Montas, signed to a $34 million, two-year contract in December, has been sidelined since spring training with a right lat strain.
