5 Animated Political Satire Series to Stream

New York Times31-05-2025
The state of American politics can feel so exaggerated and far-fetched that one of the best ways to represent it is through a medium made for such absurdity. Animated satirical series can depict our country's political figures and moments at their most bizarre, sometimes taking aim at a particular party or politician, and sometimes lambasting the general idea of America as a fair, free and democratic nation. What follows is a guide to animated satires of American politics and politicians from the first Bush administration to the Biden administration.
#1 Happy Family USA (2025- )
This new series, created by the comedian Ramy Youssef and the writer Pam Brady, depicts a Muslim Egyptian American family in New Jersey who must learn to properly code-switch and project the image of a nonthreatening, properly assimilated family in order to carry on in the midst of the prejudice and jingoism of post-9/11 America.
Much of the series focuses on the exploits and misadventures of Rumi (voiced by Youssef), who tries to find his place among his middle school peers. But beyond the more standard adolescent story lines, '#1 Happy Family USA' hilariously skewers the likes of Fox News and George W. Bush, and also offers a stringent critique of how American beliefs and values shifted at the expense of many Muslim citizens and people of color after 9/11.
Streaming on Amazon Prime.
American Dad! (2005- )
The series creator Seth MacFarlane (who also created 'Family Guy') has said that 'American Dad!' was inspired by his frustration with the 2000 presidential election and the Bush administration. The sitcom stars the Smith family, the patriarch of which, Stan, is a jingoistic far-right Republican who works for the C.I.A. Conservative politics take many of the satire's hits, but characters like Stan's hippie daughter and her boyfriend then husband represent leftist targets that get mocked regularly.

Mike Johnson says Ghislaine Maxwell pardon would give him ‘pause,' won't get ahead of Trump

House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-Louisiana, said he believes Ghislaine Maxwell, a key associate of Jeffrey Epstein currently serving 20 years in prison for conspiring to sexually abuse minors, should face "a life sentence." "If you're asking my opinion, I think 20 years was a pittance," Johnson told NBC's Kristen Welker on "Meet the Press" July 27. "I think she should have a life sentence, at least." His remarks to NBC come as many, including supporters of President Donald Trump, clamor for testimony from Maxwell. Some followers of the case have proposed a pardon in exchange, but Trump told reporters on July 25 he hadn't considered the move. "I'm allowed to do it, but it's something I have not thought about," the president said. Epstein was charged with sexually trafficking minors and died by suicide while in detention in 2019. Maxwell, his longtime girlfriend, has been accused of recruiting minors for the disgraced financier's predation. Maxwell maintains her innocence and is appealing her 2021 sex-trafficking conviction. Johnson in his interview with NBC reiterated that pardons aren't up to him, telling the outlet, "obviously that's a decision of the president." "I won't get in front of him," Johnson said. "That's not my lane." But, later in the interview he noted, "It's hard to put into words how evil this was, and that she orchestrated it and was a big part of it." "So, again, not my decision," he added, "but I have great pause about that, as any reasonable person would." The Trump administration for weeks has faced backlash over its handling of Epstein's case. Critics from Democratic lawmakers to prominent Republicans and slices of Trump's voter base accuse the president and other officials of not being transparent with the American people. The speaker has faced his own ongoing Epstein-related criticism, as some House Republicans have zeroed in on the Justice Department's recent review of Epstein's case and are calling for related documents to be released publicly. Democrats in Congress have piled on too. Reps. Ro Khanna, D-California, and Thomas Massie, R-Kentucky, introduced a bipartisan measure to force the Trump administration's hand in releasing the federal government's files. Also on "Meet The Press," the pair split on pardoning Maxwell. "That would be up to the president," Massie said. "But if she has information that could help us, then I think she should testify. Let's get that out there. And whatever they need to do to compel that testimony, as long as it's truthful, I would be in favor of." Khanna disagreed, saying Maxwell shouldn't receive a pardon. "Look, I agree with Congressman Massie that she should testify," the California Democrat said. "But she's been indicted twice on perjury. This is why we need the files. This is why we need independent evidence." Private Plane Crashes Off California Coast with 3 People on Board as Search Is Underway

The Federal Aviation Administration confirmed that it issued an alert for the Beech 95-B55 aircraft off the coast of Pacific Grove A search is underway for three people after a private plane crashed off a California coast over the weekend. On Saturday, July 26, before 10:40 p.m., a two-engine aircraft crashed in the ocean near Sunset Drive and Jewell Avenue in Pacific Grove, Calif., per Flight Radar data, initially shared by NBC affiliate KSBW. A spokesperson for the Federal Aviation Administration confirmed in a statement to PEOPLE on Sunday that it had issued an alert notice, which it does for missing aircraft, for the Beech 95-B55 aircraft off the coast of Pacific Grove on Saturday and that three people were on board. The private plane departed from San Carlos Airport shortly after 10 p.m. local time and was headed to Monterey Regional Airport, per the Flight Radar data, which notes that the plane landed around 10:37 p.m. after 26 minutes of total travel and was last seen near Monterey. The flight, N8796R, traveled roughly 70 miles in total, according to Flight Radar. The FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) will investigate the crash, per the FAA, which shared that the NTSB will provide further updates. There has since been a multi-agency response to the crash, including assistance from the Monterey County Sheriff's Office, Pacific Grove Police, the Coast Guard and CAL FIRE, per KSBW. A spokesperson for the Coast Guard confirmed to the Daily Mail that a helicopter and lifeboats were deployed minutes after the crash. The sheriff's office, NTSB and U.S. Coast Guard Southwest District did not immediately respond to PEOPLE's request for further information on Sunday. Also citing the Coast Guard, NBC affiliate KNBC reported that the branch received a report around 11:15 p.m. local time about a crash roughly 200 to 300 feet off Point Pinos Lighthouse near the Monterey Peninsula — with multiple agencies using drones, boats and helicopters to search the area. CAL FIRE told KSBW that witnesses reported hearing an engine of an aircraft revving before a splash in the ocean, estimating that the crash site could be between 200 meters and a quarter mile offshore. According to an additional report from the outlet, debris began to wash ashore near the apparent crash site and the NTSB will be reviewing them. The area of Sunset Drive between Jewell Avenue and Pico Avenue was closed amid the response, per KSBW. Footage from the outlet shows flares being shot into the sky as first responders scope out the scene. Read the original article on People

Prepare to Celebrate 60 Years of ‘Star Trek' With Nacelle's Nostalgic Figures

Star Trek turns 60 next year, and the franchise is preparing to celebrate in style, especially with a brand new show on the way in Starfleet Academy. But outside of streaming, you'll be able to celebrate in style with Nacelle's new line of Star Trek action figures, which will dedicate a whole wave to the original series next year—and io9 has your first up-close look at one of them. As previously (and exclusively) revealed by io9 this past Friday, the third wave of Nacelle's Star Trek line is set to release in 2026. While Nacelle made waves announcing its Trek line by eschewing the typical process of making a Captain Picard and Captain Kirk and then calling it a day—with wave one including an eclectic mix of deep-cut characters, from Tuvix, to Weyoun, to Admiral Jellico—wave 3 of the series will buck that trend and go all in on the original Trek as an anniversary celebration. All the main crew and then some will be part of the wave, including Kirk, Spock, Scotty, Chekov, Sulu, Doctor McCoy, Nurse Chapel, Yeoman Rand, and a mystery two-pack being kept under wraps. And, of course, that lineup wouldn't be complete without Enterprise's premiere xenolinguist and communications officer, Nyota Uhura, who you can see below in all her action figure render glory, teased at SDCC during Nacelle's panel, but making its online debut here on io9! As you can see, at least one of Uhura's accessories will be a classic phaser rifle—but you can expect her to come with a few more, based on Nacelle's plans for their other Trek figures. We'll at least need a separate teeny-tiny communication earpiece, or an alternate head of her using it, for sure! Wave 3 of Nacelle's Star Trek line is expected to launch some time in 2026. However, if you're like me and yearn to own a Weyoun action figure, you can preorder wave 1 now, due for release in late 2025. Want more io9 news?
