HYDRAA zeroes in on 349 flood zones across 3 segments in city
HYDRAA Commissioner AV Ranganath chaired a crucial coordination meeting with traffic police and other key departmental officials to bolster the city's flood preparedness. Joint CPs Gajarao Bhupal and Joel Davis, HYDRAA Additional Director V Papa Rao, and other vital personnel from traffic and civic bodies were in attendance.
During the meeting, the Commissioner emphasised that preventing waterlogging on roads must be a shared objective across all departments. "There must be clarity on how to resolve each problem, and all departments must work in coordination," stated AV Ranganath.
Officials have been instructed to remain vigilant in these identified zones as soon as rain alerts are issued. Special attention is being given to whether these areas are linked to nearby lakes and drains, which could exacerbate overflow. "Two hours of rain is causing water to rise by one metre in lakes. But it is taking up to a week for this water to drain out. This calls for an urgent study on lake water levels," he noted.
HYDRAA is already engaged in expanding stormwater drains in critical locations such as Patny, Chikoti Gardens, and Chintal Basti in Secunderabad. The Commissioner reminded officials that court rulings explicitly prohibit encroachments on lakes and drains, stressing that such illegal structures must be removed without delay.
Furthermore, HYDRAA has identified 50 major trouble spots in the city where flooding is a recurring issue. Commissioner Ranganath underscored that permanent solutions must be prioritised in these areas. To tackle emergencies during heavy rains, HYDRAA is deploying 150 Monsoon Emergency Teams to supplement its existing 51 Disaster Response Teams within the next three days. These teams will work closely with GHMC field staff, ensuring coordination with other departments including the Water Board, Traffic Police, Irrigation, and Electricity.
Meanwhile, HYDRAA has introduced a dedicated phone number for citizens to report lake encroachments and violations. Citizens can now directly contact HYDRAA at 7207923085 for immediate reporting of any suspicious activities or encroachments near lakes and water bodies.
Alternatively, citizens can share photos and location details via WhatsApp to 8712406899, facilitating real-time complaint filing with supporting evidence for concerned residents.

Telangana releases funds for relief operations in rain-hit districts
With heavy rain triggering a flood-like situation in parts of Telangana, the state government on Thursday released Rs 1 crore each to the districts for relief operations. Revenue Minister Ponguleti Srinivas Reddy announced this during a video conference with District Collectors to review the situation. He directed the Collectors to be alert and take measures to prevent loss of life and property. They were directed to have special focus on low-lying and flood-prone areas. The minister asked the Collectors to cancel leaves of all officials and call back those who were already on leave. In view of the heavy rain alert for the next three days, he asked them to take all necessary measures to ensure that people do not face any problems. The minister and Chief Secretary Ramakrishna Rao enquired about the situation in the districts. In Greater Hyderabad, they wanted the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC), Hyderabad Metro Water Supply & Sewerage Board (HMWSSB) and Traffic Department to work in coordination. Heavy rain continues to pound parts of Telangana under the impact of a low-pressure area, paralysing normal life and affecting road connectivity to some villages. Rivulets, lakes and ponds were overflowing due to incessant rain, inundating low-lying areas. The low-pressure system has impacted South Telangana with heavy to very heavy rain at a few places. United Mahabubnagar, Nalgonda, Adilabad, Khammam and Rangareddy districts received heavy rains since last night. Maddukur in Bhadradri Kothagudem district received the highest rainfall of 12.7 cm, followed by 12.6 cm in Jadcherla in Mahabubnagar district and 12.4 cm in Pargi in Vikarabad district. Low-lying colonies in Kodad town in Suryapet district were inundated while agricultural fields turned into lakes. A temple submerged in the floodwaters of the Kagna rivulet in Bashirabad mandal of Vikarabad district. Mahadeva Lingeshwaraswami Temple in Jivangi village was submerged. A school bus was also caught in the floodwater. Children and the bus driver managed to come out safely with the help of local people.

Heavy rainfall continues to lash several parts of the country, prompting school closures in some states and cities as a safety measure. Authorities in the affected areas have issued official notifications regarding the shutdown of schools. Due to heavy rains, the Telangana government has announced a holiday in Warangal, Hanumakonda, Jangaon, Mahbubabad, and Yadadri Bhuvanagiri districts on August 14. The school shall function only in the morning shift in the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) area, the School Education Director said in an official communication late Tuesday. The Met Centre of IMD, in its weather forecast and warnings issued at 2030 hours, said very heavy to extremely heavy rainfall is very likely to occur at isolated places in Bhadradri Kothagudem, Jayashankar Bhupalpally, Medak and other districts between 2030 hours on August 13 to 0830 hours on August 14. Schools are expected to remain closed until Sunday, August 17, due to continued severe weather and the Janmashtami holiday on August 16, with reopening scheduled for Monday, August 18. Despite heavy rains in Delhi and the surrounding NCR areas on Tuesday and early Thursday, there has been no official notification regarding the closure of schools in the national capital. Areas including Lajpat Nagar, RK Puram, Lodhi Road, and the Delhi-Haryana border witnessed intense showers. Earlier, heavy rainfall lashed several parts of Delhi on Tuesday. Areas including Minto Bridge, Vijay Chowk, Moti Bagh flyover, Rafi Marg, and Nizamuddin flyover witnessed intense showers. In Uttarakhand, the IMD has forecast heavy rainfall in Rudraprayag district and other parts of the state on August 14. While no official update has been issued regarding school closures, the Kedarnath Yatra has been temporarily suspended for three days due to a red alert from the IMD. Telangana Weather Update The Meteorological Department has issued a red alert for Telangana and predicted very heavy to extremely heavy rain over the GHMC area today. The state government has declared a half-day holiday for all government and private schools in the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) area on the 14th, following a forecast of heavy to extremely heavy rainfall. In view of the alert, the government has also cancelled the leave of all irrigation department officials for the next four days. On Tuesday, Chief Minister Revanth Reddy directed officials to take all necessary safety measures to prevent loss of life during the rains and to strictly restrict vehicle movement on flooded bridges, canals, streams, and causeways overflowing in low-lying areas, according to an official press release. Delhi Weather Update The IMD has forecast a generally cloudy sky today, with one or two spells of light to moderate rain or thundershowers, most likely during the morning or forenoon. The maximum temperature is expected to be around 34 degrees Celcious, while the minimum will be about 23 degrees Celcious.
