Volunteers have been awarded the highest honour their local authority can grant for outstanding services to the community.
Chester-le-Street residents John Adey and Jimmy Carroll were among those given a Chairman's Medal by Durham County Council thanks to their community efforts to commemorate those from the borough who have fought and died in wars.
The pair were instrumental in creating the town's Remembrance memorial and annual parade, offering residents opportunities to reflect and pay their respects.
Also recognised were volunteers from the Open Door Church for their support for vulnerable residents across Willington.
After raising funds for the town's war memorial in 2009, Mr Adey and Mr Carroll dedicated their efforts to growing a regular community event.
Meanwhile, the Open Door Church regularly run a range of activities to bring residents together, helping them develop skills such as day-to-day budgeting.
The medals were presented by Joan Nicholson, Durham County Council's outgoing chairperson.

County Durham club which held 'wrestling death match' to be auctioned off

A County Durham club that rose to prominence after holding an ill-fated wrestling event featuring a 'death match' has had its price slashed as it heads to auction. New Seaham Conservative Club, the venue of the notorious 'Pits of Punishment' event, is now on the market for £250,000, after previously being listed for £300,000. In July 2023, the club was fined close to £1,000 after being convicted of offences related to the wrestling event, which saw wrestlers left covered in blood. It held the event without proper licensing, allowed children to be present after 10pm, and sold alcohol to non-members without the necessary licence or temporary event notice. The estate agents are presenting the property, now wrestling-match-free as a "detached former social club with an adjoining self-contained three-bedroom house". Auctioneers Savills highlight the "asset management potential in its current use or development potential to be converted into multiple dwellings" subject to the necessary consents. The club was fined in 2023 after the so-called 'death match'. (Image: DURHAM COUNTY COUNCIL) Constructed in 1895, the property is of brick construction and is set beneath a multi-pitched slate-covered roof. The club also features a beer garden, a beer patio, and car parking for approximately 20 vehicles. The property extends to 0.54 acres in total. The detached single-storey social club includes trading rooms, a games area, a members lounge, a function room, and a public bar with a stage area and dance floor. Ancillary trading areas include customer WCs, store rooms, dressing rooms, a manager's office, and a boiler room. The basement houses a beer cellar and additional storage. The site also boasts a service yard and additional parking spaces at the front of the property. The auction for the property is scheduled for June 17, just a month shy of the two year anniversary of the venue being fined for the 'death match'.

Grandma killed in crash had 'years left to give'

The family of an 86-year-old woman who died after being hit by an electric motorbike on a pedestrian crossing have said she had "years left to give". Gloria Stephenson, from Silksworth, Sunderland, died on the city's Burdon Road on 16 May. Northumbria Police said it was understood she was using a zebra crossing when she was struck by a black Sur-Ron electric motorcycle. An 18-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and released on bail. In a statement, Ms Stephenson's family said: "We are devastated at the loss of our vibrant, active, beautiful and intelligent mam, grandma, mother-in-law and great grandma." They also thanked the people who supported Ms Stephenson and her daughter and grandson at the scene. "The press described her as an 'elderly lady', however we want to make absolutely clear that our mam was full of life," the family said. "She was active, fit, healthy and had years left to give her love and share her energy and zest for life with everyone who knew her." Northumbria Police said the rider initially drove away from the scene, but was arrested later on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and the bike was recovered. He remains on bail while the investigation continues and Sgt Russell Surrey urged any witnesses to contact the force. Follow BBC Sunderland on X, Facebook, Nextdoor and Instagram. LISTED: The temporary stop offs in County Durham for travellers heading to Appleby

Eight temporary stop-off areas in County Durham have been identified for travellers en-route to Appleby Horse Fair. As in previous years, Durham County Council has set up Temporary Stop Over Areas (TSOAs) along roads traditionally used by travellers heading to and from the fair. The fair will be held on its traditional date and will run from Thursday 5 to Wednesday, June 11. Eight TSOAs have been prepared in Teesdale and South West Durham, which are open now until Friday, June 28. The TSOAs in South West Durham are located at: Westerton Layby, DL14 8AL Gurney Valley, DL14 8RP The sites located in Teesdale are: Broomielaw Picnic Area, DL12 8TT Guide Post Corner, Bowes, DL12 9HU Land at Stainton Bank, DL12 8RQ Shaw Bank Field, DL12 8TD Wackerfield Layby, DL2 3AP Winston Corner, DL2 3RW Temporary signs will be in place showing the locations of the TSOAs as well as signed guidance for those who encamp. Officers from the council and representatives from other organisations will be making regular visits to the TSOAs and, should any appear, unauthorised encampments, to ensure appropriate support is offered to those using them. Owen Cleugh, Durham County Council's safer places manager, said: 'We have been working closely with partners, businesses, residents and members of the Gypsy, Roma, Traveller community to provide sites ahead of Appleby Fair. We would strongly encourage those travelling to utilise the designated areas, instead of camping in unauthorised locations.' Sites are being provided as part of a coordinated response with the South West Durham and Dales Business, Residents and Travellers group. This group includes representatives from the council, town and parish councils, Durham Constabulary, businesses and Gypsy, Roma, Traveller representatives.
