The 'body paint guy' hyping up Moana Pasifika from the sidelines

1News24-05-2025

Phillip Enari arrived in New Zealand two years ago on a study scholarship.
Shy and humble by day, at night he transforms to Moana Pasifika superfan otherwise known as the "body paint guy".
"I had talked about it with a few of my family and friends about my idea, they were like 'yeah you should do it' and it became a thing," Enari said.
Enari generally goes as ocean or water-based characters and with help from a cousin it usually takes around 30-40 mins to do.
He said he loves there is a Pacific Islands team which has been notching up big wins.
"It's much more than a team it's a movement for me, I feel a sense of pride and happiness seeing that that team is a Pacific Islander team really ignites a fire in me," he said.
"It really motivates me and really makes me think that I can do whatever I set my mind to... like the boys".
Moana Pasifika's connection with the fans is winning hearts and smashing records both on and off the field.
In just 30 days, the team got 39.1 million views on their social media platforms, as well as notching up historic wins with Ardie Savea as captain.
Star Miracle Faiilagi, who was plucked straight from a Samoan club in 2023, said Moana's fan base has been "unreal"
"They have played a huge role in our success this year, I think having them motivates the boys as well... we play for them with all our heart".
Staying true to Pacific culture has also struck a chord with supporters.
"Its our identity, its our DNA.. we coming together every morning having a hymn and a prayer to start our day," said Faiilagi.
Head coach Tana Umaga said culture is a major part of how the team works.
"It's huge its who we are its what sets us apart from most teams in that our culture is the very thing we do," Umaga said.
Tongan community leader Pakilau Manase Lua said the team has united the Pasifika community.
"Who would have thought Tongans and Samoans will come together as one and enjoy themselves in a peaceful and joyous manner lik that...you know what Ardie has done I mean the Tongans are trying to adopt him," he joked.
Previously seen as the underdog the team is now considered a serious threat. It's been a David and Goliath battle that which has captivated the public.
Enari said his favourite team really deserves to make the playoffs.
"All the criticism that they've received they've really proven the critics wrong," Enari said.
Moana Pasifika knows it is a challenge but they hope to cement the respect they have earned with another win.

The Fijiana women's rugby team kicked off their campaign at the Oceania Rugby Women's Challenge with a 59-5 win over Tonga in Sigatoka. Photo: Ridiqiulas Photography The Fijiana women's rugby team kicked off their campaign at the Oceania Rugby Women's Challenge with a 59-5 win over Tonga in Sigatoka on Friday afternoon. Defending the title at home, the Fijians took a 30-0 lead at halftime. Fiji's head coach, Ioan Cunningham, expressed pride in his team's performance, particularly under the challenging ground conditions at Lawaqa Park. He also praised the impact of the five debutants. Tonga will meet Samoa on Tuesday in the second game of the tournament. Meanwhile, in the Oceania Under-20 Rugby Challenge, the Fiji under-20s team retained their title for another year when they swept through the event undefeated. Fiji will host Samoa and Australia in a tri-nation international boxing event at the FMF Gymnasium in Suva at the end of June. FBC reports the Fiji Amateur Boxing head coach Cam Todd confirmed a team of 30 boxers from Australia and a 10-member squad from Samoa will be competing. The event will feature boxers in the 12 to 19-year-old bracket, in both the male and female categories. Todd said the Australian team features several state champions and elite-level fighters. Team Samoa are currently seeking more funding to make their trip possible. Independent Boxing Samoa Incorporated president Tavui Mike Lemisio said while they have received assistance from the Samoa Olympic Committee and the Ministry of Sports and Recreation, it's not enough. The Samoa Observer reported the team needs the funding to pay off their airfares, accommodation and other expenses. Former New Zealand sevens and Hurricanes player Salesi Rayasi has been named in the Flying Fijians extended squad for upcoming international matches in July. Rayasi, who played 50 games for the Hurricanes in Super Rugby, signed a two-year deal with French club Vannes last year. Fijians' head coach Mick Byrne has named him in the squad to prepare for matches against the Wallabies and Scotland. The squad includes Hawke's Bay scrum half Sam Wye, some players from the Fijian Drua team and a number of players playing in Europe. The draw has been made for the FIFA under-20 World Cup which includes Oceania qualifiers New Zealand and New Caledonia. OFC champions New Zealand are in group A, alongside hosts Chile, Japan and Egypt. Second qualifier New Caledonia will make its tournament debut and face USA, France and South Africa in Group E. The tournament, which will start in late September, will see matches played in four different cities across Chile. The inaugural six-team Rugby Premier League 7s is set to debut in India from 15 to 29 June. A number of international sevens stars have been named in the six franchise teams, including some from Fiji and New Zealand. Rahul Bose, President of Rugby India, said the event will be a game-changer for rugby in India, and fans can expect nothing less than world-class rugby action that will inspire the next generation of athletes in the country. The Fiji national women's football team scored a 3-1 win over Papua New Guinea in Port Moresby in the team's final international friendly. FBC reported PNG drew first blood through Marie Kaipu, who gave the home side an early lead. But Fijian striker Cema Nasau scored a hat-trick to give her team the win. Both sides now shift their focus to the 2025 OFC Women's Nations Cup, which will be held at the HFC Bank Stadium in Suva.

Ioane pops off at social media haters as Blues stay in the fight

The late night refresh of Instagram is quickly becoming as much of a rugby tradition as after match speeches, and Rieko Ioane once again did not disappoint after the Blues' brutal 20-19 upset of the Chiefs in Hamilton. The All Blacks centre put in another strong showing as the test season loomed, however took aim at his detractors on social media with a late night Instagram story that read: "To all the 'fans' let's keep family and friends out of my comments- I know the game I play, but that is for me not them. Live and die by the sword, all to create a spectacle of the beautiful game. "If you really want to see what it's like to be a footy player, go to your local super rugby club and join in." Rieko Ioane's post match Instagram story. Photo: Instagram Ioane went on to tell his critics to "be better and pay that sky bill". It comes a week after a social media cold war between the Blues and Moana Pasifika turned hot after the defending champions advanced to the play-offs at the rival expansion team's expense, with Ioane among a number of current All Blacks to get involved in the comments sections. However, while it was past midnight for Ioane's thoughts to land, it was at about the half hour mark of the game itself when you got the feeling it might be the Blues' night. Scoring at FMG Stadium between them and the Chiefs was being done in threes, the ball wasn't moving much past the midfield and the forwards were all having plenty of carries into each other. In short, it was the sort of game that played to their strengths and the longer that would continue, the better chance they were going to have of pulling off an unlikely victory. While it did break open a little in the second half and the Chiefs were able to establish a two score lead, by that point it was going to come down to who could win the penalties and subsequent field position - something the Blues managed expertly in the dying stages to eventually find a way for lock Josh Beehre to score the winning try. "I think our defence has shown that the team hasn't lost faith in what we're doing," said Blues coach Vern Cotter, in the more traditional setting of a post-match press conference. "And the boys roll their sleeves up. If you look at the first half, I thought we were quite comfortable on defence in the first 10 minutes…as soon as we came off the line and met them, I think that took away their advantage that they were trying to create." Meanwhile, the Chiefs will be lamenting potentially giving up a home final, however Clayton McMillan praised the Blues for executing their direct gameplan. "That's good old fashioned finals grind, you know?" he said. "And probably in the last 15, 20 minutes, we struggled to exit probably off the back of a misfiring lineout. A few discipline issues, especially in the last little bit." The Chiefs will return back to FMG Stadium Waikato next Saturday to face the Brumbies, who knocked the Hurricanes out in last night's final play-off game. The Blues now continue their improbable run at back to back championships with a trip to Christchurch, where they will face the Crusaders on a six day turn around - something that Cotter wasn't fazed with. "I think we just get straight back into it on Monday, then a low intensity Tuesday. We'll have a day off on Wednesday, speed it up a bit and then we're on we're on the plane on Thursday… it's just our job to them to prepare as best we can, and it'll be what it'll be."
