Inflation in Oman edges up to 0.82%
The highest price increases were recorded in the personal goods and miscellaneous services group (up 7.45 per cent), transportation (up 3.12 per cent), and restaurants and hotels (up 1.39 per cent). The health group increased by 0.76 per cent, clothing and footwear by 0.6 per cent and education by 0.07 per cent.
Housing, water, electricity, gas and other fuels rose marginally by 0.02 per cent.
However, food and non-alcoholic beverages dropped by 0.59 per cent, furniture and household equipment fell by 0.25 per cent, culture and entertainment dipped 0.02 per cent, and tobacco declined by 0.01 per cent. Communication prices remained unchanged.
Within food categories, prices of sugar, jam, honey and sweets rose 3.31 per cent, dairy products increased 1.84 per cent, oils and fats climbed 1.65 per cent, and meat and cereals rose slightly.
However, vegetable prices fell by 8.06 per cent, seafood by 3.84 per cent, fruit by 0.45 per cent and non-alcoholic beverages by 0.19 per cent.
Among the governorates, Al Dakhiliyah recorded the highest inflation at 1.76 per cent, followed by Al Dhahirah (1.57 per cent), Al Sharqiyah South (1.4 per cent), Musandam (1.34 per cent) and Al Wusta (1.22 per cent). The lowest inflation was in Al Batinah South (0.1 per cent), while Al Sharqiyah North saw a slight decrease of 0.01 per cent. — ONA

Al-Mudhaibi: The completion rate of the water network project in Wadi Andam villages in Al Mudhaibi, North A'Sharqiyah Governorate, implemented by Nama Water Services, has exceeded 93%, with a total cost of RO 3,668,000. Eng. Awad Khamis Al Shibli, Project Manager at Nama Water Services, stated that the Wadi Andam water network project includes expanding the existing Khadra Bani Dafaa pumping station in Al-Habat village and constructing three new fiberglass tanks, each with a capacity of 90 cubic meters. Additionally, two booster pumping stations will be built in Al-Washal and Al-Fulaij villages, along with water connections for nine villages in Wadi Andam, he added. He told Oman News Agency (ONA) that the pipeline extension for the two-year project spans about 102 kilometers. Excavation work has been completed for approximately 101 kilometers, with pipes laid over 99.35 kilometers, alongside backfilling operations. The entire project is expected to be completed in the third quarter of this year. Meanwhile, the second phase of the drinking water distribution network project continues in the wilayat, costing RO 15,132,000, with completion expected by 2027. This phase includes a 40 km transmission pipeline, a 217 km distribution network, 4,065 household connections, a pumping station, and an elevated tank. It is worth noting that Nama Water Services is preparing to launch a water network project in the wilayat of Damaa and Al-Ta'eeen. The 36-month project will include a 77.85 km water transmission pipeline between Al-Jarda in Al-Mudhaibi and Mahlah in Damaa and Al-Ta'eeen, along with seven distribution tanks with storage capacities ranging between 3,000 and 10,000 cubic meters, in addition to two pumping stations in Al-Jarda and Al-Rahba areas.

65% Omanis in private sector earn less than RO600
Muscat – Omani nationals employed in the government sector continue to earn significantly higher wages compared to their counterparts in the private sector, according to 2024 data from National Centre for Statistics and Information. Out of 740,877 Omanis insured in 2024, 392,011 work in the government and 348,866 are in the private sector. Despite this near-even split, a stark contrast emerges in wage distribution. The private sector has a heavy concentration of Omanis in the lowest wage brackets. A total of 138,632 private sector employees earn between RO325 and RO400 monthly, representing nearly 40% of all Omanis in the private sector. In contrast, 5,077 government employees fall within this bracket, which is 1.3% of all those employed in the government sector. The disparity persists across other low-income bands. A total of 47,713 private sector employees earn RO400-RO500, compared to 11,047 in government. In the RO500-RO600 bracket, 40,387 are in private jobs versus 30,090 in government. Combined, more than 65% Omanis in the private sector earn less than RO600, whereas less than 12% government employees fall into this category. At the higher end of the wage spectrum, the imbalance is reversed. In the RO2,000 to RO2,500 range, 4,987 are government compared to 7,797 private sector employees. Among those earning RO2,500 or more, 16,172 are in the private sector while 5,689 are in government. This suggests a narrowing gap at the very top but a broader divide across the lower and middle wage tiers. Gender disparities are also evident. Of the total 740,877 Omanis insured, 215,671 are women and 525,206 are men. Male employees dominate all income categories, especially the higher wage brackets. Sector-wise, Omanis in the private sector are spread across different fields. The construction sector employs the largest number of Omanis – 76,573 – followed by manufacturing (57,627), wholesale, retail trade and repair of vehicles (56,543), agriculture and fisheries (47,929), and transport and storage (47,428) making the top five sectors employing citizens. For expatriates, the construction sector is the largest employer (439,924), followed by wholesale, retail trade and repair of vehicles (277,247), those employed by households (272,542), manufacturing (183,134) and administrative and support services (134,275), making the top five sectors employing expatriate workers.

MSX Index trading value reaches RO 28.211 billion
MUSCAT: The Muscat Stock Exchange (MSX) 30 Index closed on Wednesday at 4,809.44 points, down 7.6 points or 0.16 per cent, compared to the last trading session's close of 4,817.01 points. Trading value reached RO 28,211,023, up 20.1 per cent compared to the last trading session's value of RO 23,483,011. A report issued by the MSX indicated that market capitalisation decreased by 0.110 percent from the last trading day, reaching approximately RO 29.27 billion. The value of non-Omani purchases on the stock exchange amounted to RO 926,000, representing 3.28 per cent, while the value of non-Omani sales amounted to RO 1,629,000, representing 5.77 per cent.
