SINGAPORE, June 16 — A 42-year-old man was injured by a gunshot yesterday while cycling in a forested area near an active military live-firing zone in Singapore, prompting investigations by both the Singapore police and the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF).
According to Channel News Asia, the police were alerted to the incident at about 11.55pm by the National University Hospital (NUH), where the man had been taken for treatment.
'A bullet slug was lodged in the man's left lower back,' the police reportedly said.
'The injury is not life-threatening, and the man is currently in a stable condition, after surgery to remove the bullet slug.'
The man had been cycling with friends at around 11.40am in the Central Catchment Nature Reserve, between Upper Seletar Reservoir and Upper Peirce Reservoir, when the incident occurred. He was brought to hospital by his companions.
Authorities emphasised that the area where the incident happened is off-limits to the public.
'The public is not allowed to access that particular area, which has signages warning against unauthorised entry into a live-firing area,' police said.
Preliminary investigations confirmed that the SAF was conducting a live-firing exercise at Nee Soon Range around the time of the incident.
Singapore's Ministry of Defence (Mindef) said the activity was held at the SAF's Nee Soon 500m Range, approximately 2.3km away.
'The SAF is working closely with the police and other relevant authorities to further investigate the circumstances of the incident.
'As a precautionary measure, live-firing activities at the Nee Soon 500m Range have been suspended,' Mindef said.
The spokesman added that the area is gazetted for live-firing and falls under the Military Manoeuvres Act, which prohibits unauthorised entry for public safety.
Police said there is currently no suspicion of foul play. Investigations are ongoing.

Singapore preschool teacher admits to tripping toddler, causing facial injuries

SINGAPORE, June 16 — A preschool teacher in Singapore who repeatedly used her leg to trip a toddler under her care, causing the child to fall and injure her face, pleaded guilty in court today. According to Channel News Asia (CNA), Saiidah Kamarudin, 34, admitted to one count of ill-treating a 20-month-old girl, an offence under the Children and Young Persons Act. A second charge will be considered during sentencing. The child, who cannot be named due to a court order, suffered facial bruises and a nosebleed after Saiidah deliberately swept her legs under her on several occasions at the childcare centre where she worked. Her actions were captured on CCTV footage, which was played in court. The incident took place in November 2023, just weeks after Saiidah began working at the centre. She had joined in late September and resigned the following month, ending her employment by mid-November. According to court proceedings, Saiidah took the toddler to the toilet shortly after noon and, while seated, wiped her face with tissue. During this, she intentionally swept her leg outward to hook the toddler's foot, causing her to stumble. Moments later, she swept her leg inward, causing the girl to fall backwards. Saiidah picked the child up, wiped her face again, and placed her in front of her to leave the toilet area. But she repeated the motion, tripping the child once more. At around 12.30pm, she used her leg again — this time catching the child on both legs. The toddler fell face-first onto the ground and began to cry. Another teacher, alerted by the child's cries, stepped in to administer first aid. The girl was later put down for a nap, but by the time she awoke, the right side of her face had visibly swollen. A subsequent medical examination confirmed she had sustained mild facial bruising. The child's father filed a police report several days later after feeling dissatisfied with the school's explanation of his daughter's injuries. He also requested access to the CCTV footage from the day of the incident. Saiidah initially claimed trial but changed her plea to guilty on the first day of proceedings. She is scheduled to return to court on July 28 for mitigation and sentencing. If convicted, she could face up to eight years in jail, a fine of up to S$8,000 (RM26,500), or both.

Singapore man jailed after threatening to kill domestic helper he fell for

SINGAPORE, June 16 — A Singaporean man who developed romantic feelings for his family's domestic helper and later blamed her for the breakdown of his marriage was jailed for 40 days today after threatening to kill her with a kitchen knife. According to Channel News Asia, Muhammad Khairulnaim Rosli, 37, pleaded guilty to one count of criminal intimidation. The court heard that Khairulnaim lived with his wife and their two young children when the helper was hired on September 10, 2023. About three months into her employment, Khairulnaim confessed his feelings to the helper, who felt 'disturbed and uncomfortable'. She rejected him in mid-December and blocked him on social media. He later told his wife about his feelings. On January 1, 2024, she asked for a divorce. Tensions escalated on January 12 when Khairulnaim tried to obtain the helper's husband's phone number from her WhatsApp messages. The helper grabbed her phone back and confronted him. A brief altercation followed at the storeroom, where Khairulnaim kicked the door three times. Later that day, he called his wife and complained the helper hadn't fed the children rice. After waking from a nap, he reportedly became enraged with himself, the helper and his wife. 'He felt that the victim had destroyed his life and he felt that he could do the same by telling the victim's husband that the victim had a boyfriend in Pakistan,' Deputy Public Prosecutor (DPP) Ho May Kim reportedly told the court. Khairulnaim then took urgent leave from work, retrieved a kitchen knife with a 16cm blade, and approached the helper. Raising the knife slightly above hip level and pointing it at her, he threatened to kill her. The helper fled the home when Khairulnaim's wife returned. A passer-by saw her crying and alerted the police. Khairulnaim was arrested later that evening. DPP Ho urged the court to impose a jail sentence of between five-and-a-half and seven weeks. She said Khairulnaim was in a position of authority and had used a weapon. However, the prosecution also took into account that he was a first-time offender, the threat was not prolonged, and the victim was not harmed. 'The accused appears to have committed the offence on impulse,' said Ho. In Singapore, criminal intimidation carries a maximum jail term of up to 20 years.
