Hamilton Accies v Montrose: Rankin won't take any chances with players carrying knocks this season

Daily Record5 days ago
The Accies boss has players suffering light injuries, but he won't risk them amid the club's transfer embargo
John Rankin admits Hamilton Accies transfer embargo means he won't take any risks with his players carrying niggling injuries this season.

The Lanarkshire side kick-off their League One campaign this afternoon at home to Montrose, but do so under a season long ban that has left them unable to bring in senior players. Only under-19s and amateurs can be signed per the stipulations of their sanction.

So Rankin won't be taking any chances with his players' fitness and that means midfielders Barry Maguire and Kyle MacDonald are set to miss today's opener as they are carrying knocks in a squad of just 19 players, which includes three 16-year-olds.

The Accies boss said: "The way our squad is in terms of not having a big squad, every game will be tough. We just have to go out with full focus and the energy and commitment we expect from our team, to try and start the season well.
"Barry Maguire has been out since half-time in the Hearts game and Kyle missed the Dumbarton because of a niggle.
"With the news [of the embargo], we just couldn't risk playing him and losing another body.
"Both have been unable to train fully this week and we just can't risk anyone with a niggle being involved in any type of footballing work, apart from running in straight lines.
"We are having to manage players before the first game and get as strong a side on the pitch as we can."

Montrose come calling off the back of a 5-0 hammering at Premiership side Dundee in their final Premier Sports Cup clash last weekend, while Accies are licking their wounds after a narrow 1-0 loss at home to League Two Dumbarton.
On today's clash, Rankin said: "It will be a very tough game. Montrose have been in the league for a number of years and Stewart Petrie has made them highly competitive.
"They've finished in the play-offs a few times and he has strengthened the squad over the summer.
"Some of the older players that were there over the years have moved on and they've freshened it up with younger ones.
"Stewart will have them well-organised and we are expecting a difficult game, but we want to make a strong start."

Rangers handed Champions League warning as Club Brugge seize initiative to edge towards crunch play-off round

One goal was enough to separate Gers two potential play-off opponents Rangers have been handed a warning by Club Brugge after their potential Champions League opponents took a big step towards the play-off round with an away victory against Red Bull Salzburg. ‌ Gers have one foot in the final qualifcation hurdle after thrashing Czech outfit Viktoria Plzen 3-0 at Ibrox in the first leg of their third round qualifier showdown on Tuesday night. ‌ Summer signing Djeidi Gassama continued his fine start to life at Rangers by bagging a brace while fellow new boy Oliver Antman capping off his debut with a superb assist. ‌ Should Russell Martin 's men finish the job in Plzen next week, then they will face the winner of the tie between Brugge and Salzburg for a place amongst Europe's elite in the money-spinning league phase. And it's the Belgian side who will be favourites to set up a showdown with the Light Blues after claiming a shut-out win on away soil, The clash at the Red Bull Arena looked to be heading for a goalless draw until the visitors struck with 16 minutes remaining through Romeo Vermant's goal. Rangers know that reaching the play-off will see them host the first leg at home on August 19/20 against Brugge or Plzen, with the return match taking place on August 26/27. And ahead of the potential showdown, the Ibrox club have taken advantage of the SPFL's new scheme to help Premiership clubs trying to get into Europe. ‌ Martin's side are due to face St Mirren in Paisley on August 24 but should they get past Plzen will then have that game postponed to a later date to boost their chances of qualifying for the Champions League. The same goes for Hibs who, if they can make it past Partizan Belgrade in the Conference League, will face Legia Warsaw or AEK Larnaca on August 21 and August 28. ‌ The capital club are currently slated to take on Falkirk on August 23. Grant Hanley ‘over the moon' to join Hibs

Hibs latest summer signing Grant Hanley has admitted he was' over the moon' after signing a two-year deal with the Club. Hanley becomes David Gray's fifth new recruit of the transfer window, following in the footsteps of Jamie McGrath, Josh Mulligan, Raphael Sallinger and Thibault Klidjé who all joined the Club this summer. The 33-year-old has had an established career to date, playing the majority of his career in the English Premier League and Championship as well as representing Scotland over 60 times internationally. Hanley helped Birmingham win the 2024/25 League One title before becoming a free agent in the summer and after weighing up a few options, the experienced defender opted to join Hibs. 'I am delighted,' Hanley told Hibs TV! 'It has been a different time in my career for me personally – being a free agent – so I had a bit of time to think about it all, but I am over the moon to get it done and to be here. 'I had never been in that situation before, so for me it was about being patient and waiting until the right opportunity came up – and thankfully I managed to get that here.' The Scotland international was spotted around Easter Road in the weeks leading up to officially signing and the defender admits that it was those interactions and experiences which helped him make his decision. 'I took my time to meet everybody properly, I came to a few games last week and I saw the atmosphere from the fans and what the Stadium is like – from there it was a very easy decision for me. 'A big part of my decision, at this period of my career, was to get a real feel for the Club and the people within it. I have been properly welcomed and made to feel properly part of it all, all those conversations really helped make my mind up. 'The stage of the career that I am at, I am looking for a really positive experience and I can see where the direction of this club is going.' Despite earning 62 caps for Scotland, this will be Hanley's first taste of domestic club football in Scotland, having featured predominantly down south with Blackburn Rovers, Newcastle United, Norwich City and latterly, Birmingham City. 'It'll be another totally different challenge – one that is different from anything I have experienced before. But that was another thing that attracted me to playing up here. 'I know the size of the Club, I know what is expected of me, I know how difficult the league is and the quality within it – so I am really looking forward to the challenge. 'I have played a lot of games so I will bring a bit of experience first and foremost. Hopefully, I can bring that both on and off the pitch and help the team to be successful.'
