Which 10 College Football Players Have The Most Passing Yards of All Time?

Fox Sports21-07-2025
It can take years for a quarterback to establish himself in college football. That's not the case with these 10 signal-callers, who seized their opportunity early and amassed historic passing yard totals during their college careers.
Here are the 10 quarterbacks with the most passing yards in NCAA D-I history. 10 CFB Players With The Most Passing Yards of All Time 10. Baker Mayfield: 14,607
Mayfield played in eight games as a freshman with Texas Tech in the Big 12 and had a solid debut season with 2,315 yards and 12 touchdowns against nine interceptions. Mayfield felt his play earned him the starting position for the following year and was discouraged when there still was a QB competition, so he opted to transfer to Oklahoma in 2014. However, Mayfield was forced to sit out that season and wouldn't suit up until 2015 because of it.
The year off didn't hurt Mayfield even a little, though, as he threw for 3,700 yards and a conference-leading 36 touchdowns, while also finishing first in the Big 12 in yards per pass attempt (9.4) and completion percentage (68.1). This was somehow Mayfield's "worst" season at Oklahoma. In 2016, he finished with 3,965 passing yards and 40 touchdowns, and he bumped that completion percentage to a D-I-best 70.9%. The following year, in 2017, he led the Big 12 in touchdowns, completion percentage and yards per attempt, and he threw for a career-high 4,627 yards en route to winning Big 12 Championship Game MVP and his second consecutive Heisman Trophy. 9. Kellen Moore: 14,667
As a freshman, Moore played in 13 games for Boise State and threw for a Western Athletic Conference-leading 3,486 yards, while also ranking first in completion percentage (69.4%), touchdowns (25) and yards per attempt (8.6). He then threw for 3,536 yards in his sophomore season, with a WAC-leading 39 touchdowns. That number jumped once again to 3,845 yards in 2010 during his junior season. Moore capped off an already impressive college career with a fantastic senior campaign, leading the WAC in completions (326), passing yards (3,800), touchdowns (a career-high 43) and yards per attempt (8.7), while leading all of D-I football in completion percentage (74.3%). 8. Ty Detmer: 15,031
Detmer starred for BYU from 1988-91, and despite finishing with what still stands as the eighth-most passing yards in FBS history, he somehow could have done even more. That's because Detmer's freshman year saw him throw for just 1,252 yards despite appearing in 12 games; his completion percentage was a mere 54.2%, and he had just 153 attempts, splitting duties with starter Sean Covey. The job was all his the following year, however, and Detmer exploded for 4,560 passing yards, 32 touchdowns, a 64.3 completion percentage and 11.1 yards per pass attempt. The first three of those led the WAC, while his yards per attempt led all of D-I football.
Detmer would win the Heisman Trophy in 1990 owing to an FBS-leading 5,188 passing yards to go along with 361 completions, 41 touchdowns and 9.2 yards per attempt, which proved to be more than enough to offset his 28 interceptions. While his 1991 wasn't quite as good, Detmer still produced 4,031 passing yards, the most in D-I, and finished third in the Heisman Trophy vote. 7. Bo Nix: 15,351
Nix starred for Auburn from 2019-21, but his passing numbers were not quite the stuff of legends while he was there. Nix played in 13, 11 and 10 games in his three seasons in the SEC, picking up 7,250 passing yards during that run.
When he transferred to Oregon for the 2022 season, though, Nix's passing numbers exploded. His completion percentage jumped from 2021's then-career-best 61% to a Pac-12-best 71.9%, and he threw for 3,593 yards with 29 touchdowns — 13 more scores than his previous career-high. His 2023 was his finest season, with Nix finishing third in the Heisman Trophy voting thanks to an FBS-leading 364 completions, a D-I-record 77.5% completion percentage, 45 touchdowns and a Pac-12-best 9.6 yards per attempt that led to 4,508 passing yards. In just two years with Oregon compared to three with Auburn, Nix threw for 851 more yards, good enough for seventh all-time. 6. Sam Hartman: 15,656
It took Hartman some time to get going, but a redshirt in 2019 and the extra year of eligibility from the COVID-19-impacted 2020-2021 school year granted him ample chances to catch up. In his first five years with Wake Forest, Hartman threw for a combined 12,967 yards, peaking in 2021 and 2022 when he collected 4,228 and 3,701 passing yards to go along with 39 and 38 touchdowns, respectively.
He would then transfer to Notre Dame for the 2023 season, and netted another 2,689 passing yards despite just 301 passing attempts and 191 completions. A career-best 8.9 yards per pass attempt ensured that those completed passes were efficient ones. The end result had him sneak past both Detmer and Nix on the all-time list. 5. Graham Harrell: 15,793
Hartman didn't quite reach Harrell, though, despite the Texas Tech signal-caller putting up all of 422 passing yards in six games as a backup in his freshman season. Harrell was a monster for his next three campaigns, though, and one of the best quarterbacks in all of D-I football. Harrell had an FBS-best 412 completions in 2006, then managed 512 in 2007 before coming back down to earth with 442 completions in 2008. All three seasons were good enough for No. 1 in the FBS. Harrell threw for 4,555, 5,705 and 5,111 passing yards during his last three years with Texas Tech, respectively, with the latter two the leading total for not just the Big 12 but D-I football as a whole. 4. Landry Jones: 16,646
Jones never had a season with any Heisman Trophy recognition, but thanks to throwing for 3,197 yards as a freshman with Oklahoma, he didn't need a year like that to make it to fourth on this list. He followed up his first season with an FBS-best 405 completions and a Big 12-leading 4,718 passing yards; it also served as a career-high for Jones in both categories. He was still throwing for a ton of yards in his junior and senior years (4,463 in 2011 and 4,267 in 2012), despite peaking as a sophomore. Jones averaged 314 passing yards per game for his entire caree. 3. Timmy Chang: 17,072
While Chang was Hawaii's starting quarterback for nine games in 2000 as a freshman, he tore a wrist ligament in 2001 and was limited to just three games. He did manage to compile 1,100 passing yards in those three games, however, and picked up another year of eligibility because of it. That extra year was put to great use.
Chang would return as Hawaii's starter in 2002, and lead the WAC in passing yards with 4,474. In fact, he threw for over 4,000 passing yards in his final three seasons, with another 4,199 in 2003 and 4,258 in 2004. Chang not only ranks third in FBS history in passing yards, but he also has the most passing attempts (2,436) of any D-I quarterback, is tied for the most seasons of 4,000 or more passing yards (three) and is second in total offensive yards (16,910). 2. Dillon Gabriel: 18,722
Gabriel spent the first three seasons of his college career at UCF, where he amassed 8,037 passing yards despite the broken clavicle that prematurely ended his 2021 season. The fact that he threw for 3,653 yards and an American Athletic Conference-best 3,570 in his first two years helped make up for that, however.
Gabriel transferred to Oklahoma in 2022, where he once again threw for over 3,000 yards in both of his full seasons with the Sooners. He then used his final year of eligibility at Oregon, where he threw for a career-high 3,857 yards. That said, Gabriel finished with nearly 19,000 passing yards and the most passing touchdowns (155) in FBS history. 1. Case Keenum: 19,217
Keenum picked up an extra year of eligibility after tearing his ACL as a junior in 2010, but even without the 636 yards that he accumulated in the three games of that season prior to his injury, he would have had enough passing yards for second all-time. Keenum threw for 2,259 yards as a freshman with Houston in seven starts (273 attempts), and took hold of the starting job in 2008. He went on to throw for 5,020 yards, leading Conference USA in that category, as well as in completions, attempts and completion percentage.
His performance in 2009 was even better. His 492 completions, 70.3 completion percentage, 44 touchdowns and 5,671 passing yards were all tops in FBS. His 5,671 passing yards are also tied for the fourth-most in a D-I season.

Raleigh hits MLB-leading 43rd homer in 8th to rally Mariners to a 3-2 win over Rays

SEATTLE (AP) — Cal Raleigh hit his MLB-leading 43rd homer of the season, a go-ahead three-run shot in the eighth inning, giving the Seattle Mariners a 3-2 win over the Tampa Bay Rays on Friday night. The Mariners won their fifth consecutive game and remained 1 1/2 games behind the AL West-leading Houston Astros. Raleigh erased Seattle's two-run deficit with a 417-foot shot to right-center field off Griffin Jax (1-6) after singles by J.P. Crawford and Cole Young. Raleigh homered for the first time since July 31 against Texas. He leads Philadelphia's Kyle Schwarber by two homers. Schwarber hit his 41st homer Friday. Carlos Vargas (4-5) worked a scoreless eighth and Matt Brash earned his second save of the season, striking out all three batters in the ninth. Rasmussen allowed four hits over six shutout innings, striking out four and walking none. Pitching in his home state, Rasmussen yielded one earned run across 20 1/3 innings in his career against Seattle. Brandon Lowe hit a solo homer in the first and Junior Caminero hit his 31st homer of the season in the fifth to give Tampa Bay a 2-0 lead. Key moment The Mariners finally got their first runner in scoring position in the eighth after Young's single that moved Crawford to second. Key stat Rasmussen has allowed only two extra-base hits over his last five starts. Seattle didn't have a runner in scoring position against the lefty. ___

Schwarber hits 41st homer and Marsh goes deep among 4 hits as Phillies beat Rangers 9-1

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Kyle Schwarber hit his 41st homer in the first inning, Brandon Marsh's four hits included a solo shot that put Philadelphia ahead for good in the fourth and the Phillies beat the Texas Rangers 9-1 on Friday night. Trea Turner had a three-run homer in a five-run ninth and drove in five. Cristopher Sánchez (11-3) allowed six hits and a run to match his career high in wins from the left-hander's only All-Star season in 2024. Schwarber lined a 413-foot shot that glanced off the right-field foul pole about two-thirds of the way up. He started the day two homers behind Seattle slugger Cal Raleigh, who leads the majors. The NL East-leading Phillies started their only nine-game road trip of the season by ending a 10-game losing streak at the home of the Rangers. The skid went back to Philadelphia's 14-10 victory on opening day in 2014 at Globe Life Park, which still stands across the street from 5-year-old Globe Life Field. Josh Jung had a tying single in the first for the AL wild card-chasing Rangers, who have dropped consecutive home games after winning their previous eight. Merrill Kelly (9-7) walked a season-high five and hit a batter with a pitch in his first home start for Texas since being acquired from Arizona before the July 31 trade deadline. The right-hander allowed five hits and four runs in 4 1/3 innings. Key moment Marsh's liner leading off the fourth just cleared the fence down the line in right for a 2-1 Philadelphia lead. A two-run double from Turner came four batters later, after back-to-back walks from Kelly. Key stat Five of Sánchez's six strikeouts were on changeups, giving him a major league-leading 97 with his best pitch. Up next Phillies LHP Jesús Luzardo (10-5, 4.32 ERA) faces Rangers ace Jacob deGrom (10-4, 2.80), who has allowed five runs in each of his past two starts. ___ AP MLB:

More on Panthers' 2024 season

Follow along live for updates and analysis as Week 1 of the NFL preseason continues ASSOCIATED PRESS Getty Images What appeared to be another lost season for Carolina under new head coach Dave Canales instead provided a glimmer of hope down the stretch in the form of Bryce Young finally blossoming as an NFL quarterback. The 2023 No. 1 pick appeared headed for "biggest busts in NFL draft history" lists after an early-season benching, only to be re-inserted as a starter in late October after Andy Dalton was injured in a minor car accident. Young finally showed flashes of the talent that earned him a Heisman Trophy at Alabama in 2021, with a touchdown-interception ratio of 12-3 during his final eight games. He's the unquestioned starter heading into 2025 with Carolina banking on the potential Young showed late last year. 2024 record: 5-12 Regular-season result: 3rd place in NFC South Notable departures: RB Miles Sanders (free agency), Edge Jadeveon Clowney (release), LB Shaq Thompson (free agency) Notable additions: WR Tetairoa McMillan (draft), Edge Nick Scourton (draft), RB Rico Dowdle (free agency), WR Hunter Renfrow (free agency) As the NFL's second-oldest quarterback, Joe Flacco — part of a four-man competition for the Cleveland Browns' starting job — is regarded as a master of his craft who won't require many practice reps to prepare for his 18th season. Throughout the spring, and during the first few days of training camp, Flacco spent a disproportionate amount of time standing around while fourth-year passer Kenny Pickett and rookies Dillon Gabriel and Shedeur Sanders sucked up snaps. Having commenced a second stint with the Browns in April, the 40-year-old former Super Bowl MVP wasn't freaking out about it, but he wasn't thrilled, either. 'I think there's probably some truth to the fact that maybe I don't need as many reps,' Flacco told The Athletic last week, before the Browns' first padded practice of the summer. 'But I do need reps. And not only do I need reps, I want reps. I like reps. I want to get better. And also, I want to be able to show guys, hey, I can still do it.' Read more on Flacco and the Browns below. GO FURTHER Joe Flacco's message to the Browns: 'I can still do it' The latest twist in the Cleveland Browns' quarterback competition will lead to rookie Shedeur Sanders starting tonight's preseason opener at Carolina. With injuries leading to detours and even the addition of veteran Tyler Huntley, Sanders will go from the clear fourth choice throughout the first two weeks of camp to first on the field in the preseason. Browns coach Kevin Stefanski announced on Wednesday that Huntley will be the only other Cleveland quarterback available for the preseason matchup with the Panthers, which is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET today. Read more about the Browns' quarterback situation below. GO FURTHER Browns rookie QB Shedeur Sanders to start preseason opener vs. Panthers The quarterback chaos of the Browns continued even in the wake of Deshaun Watson's injury, perhaps solidifying his $230 million guaranteed contract as the worst in NFL history. Cleveland brought back Joe Flacco, hero of their 2023 playoff run, in free agency and traded backup Dorian Thompson-Robinson to the Eagles for Kenny Pickett. Then the real shockers game in the 2025 NFL Draft when Cleveland selected quarterback Dillon Gabriel at the end of the third round — and the free-falling Shedeur Sanders two rounds later. That sets up a four-way battle to be the Browns' starting quarterback in what could become a pivotal 2025 for Cleveland's current leadership regime. Here's Shedeur Sanders entering Bank of America Stadium ahead of his first preseason start. Starting quarterback Deshaun Watson tore his Achilles tendon in Week 7 in what may have been his last snap with the Browns. The likelihood of that only increased when he re-tore his Achilles in January, sidelining him for likely most of the 2025 season (if not all of it) as the Browns limped to a 3-14 record. Fans did get to see the heartwarming return of star running back Nick Chubb from tearing multiple ligaments in his knee in Week 2 of 2023, but Cleveland effectively waved the white flag by trading wideout Amari Cooper to the Bills midseason. 2024 record: 3-14 Regular-season result: 4th in AFC North Notable departures: QB Dorian Thompson-Robinson, QB Jameis Winston, RB Nick Chubb, DL Dalvin Tomlinson Notable additions: QB Joe Flacco, QB Dillon Gabriel, QB Shedeur Sanders, QB Kenny Pickett, DL Maliek Collins After being selected with the eighth pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, Michael Penix Jr. spent most of his rookie season as Kirk Cousins' backup in Atlanta, eventually starting the Falcons' last three games. Appearing in five games overall, Penix threw for 775 yards, with three touchdowns and three interceptions. But now, this is his show. Throughout his collegiate career and briefly last season, the 25-year-old displayed the arm strength and willingness to push the ball down the field, quickly building a rapport with star wideout Drake London. Not only is he a must-watch player tonight, but Penix will be a player to monitor all season. 2025 offseason: For the second straight year, the Falcons pulled off a first-round stunner in the draft. After they took Georgia edge rusher Jalon Walker No. 15 overall, they fortified their woeful pass rush even more by trading nearly 20 spots back up into the first round to take Tennessee edge rusher James Pearce Jr. at No. 26 overall. Atlanta is counting on the rookie tandem to jump-start its woeful defensive front, whose struggles helped contribute to head coach Raheem Morris firing defensive coordinator Jimmy Lake after just one season and replacing him with former Jets interim head coach Jeff Ulbrich. But just as notable is what Atlanta hasn't done (yet) — moved on from Kirk Cousins, who's still owed a large portion of guaranteed money on his contract. 2024 season: To understand the Falcons' regular season, you have to go back to the 2024 NFL Draft, when Atlanta shocked the world by taking quarterback Michael Penix Jr. No. 8 overall just weeks after handing Kirk Cousins a contract worth $90 million guaranteed to be their quarterback of the immediate future. The move blindsided the veteran Cousins, who dealt with lingering effects of his 2023 Achilles injury as well as a later shoulder injury. Brief flashes of excellence for Cousins in early-season primetime wins over the Eagles and Buccaneers game way to a disappointing run down the stretch that saw him benched for Penix in Week 16 with the Falcons clinging to their playoff hopes. Penix went 1-2 in his first three starts, and Atlanta missed the playoffs ... again. 2024 record: 8-9 Regular-season result: 2nd in NFC South Notable departures: OL Drew Dalman (free agency), WR Rondale Moore (free agency) Notable additions: Edge Jalon Walker (draft), edge James Pearce Jr. (draft) 2025 offseason: The good news for the Lions is that for the most part, they return the same extremely talented core of players on both sides of the ball assembled by Dan Campbell and general manager Brad Holmes, the only notable exceptions being center Frank Ragnow (retirement) and cornerback Carlton Davis (free agency). The bad news is both of their well-regarded coordinators from the first part of Campbell's tenure left for head coaching jobs, Aaron Glenn to the Jets and offensive coordinator Ben Johnson to the Bears. Campbell hired Broncos passing game coordinator John Morton to replace Johnson and promoted linebackers coach Kelvin Sheppard to replace Glenn. The Lions reinforced their trenches with their first two picks in April's draft by taking Ohio State defensive lineman Tyleik Williams and Georgia offensive lineman Tate Ratledge, respectively, with Ratledge expected to compete for Ragnow's former job. Detroit is coming off arguably its best season in franchise history — but there are plenty of questions surrounding whether the Lions will replicate their success... 2024 season: Dan Campbell's culture-resetting rebuild paid off in 2024 as the Lions surged to a 15-2 record, tying the Chiefs for best in the league and earning the No. 1 playoff seed in the NFC behind a dynamic, innovative offense and physical, aggressive defense. But warning signs started popping up down the stretch as Detroit's defense was beset by a deluge of injuries, starting all the way back with superstar pass-rusher Aidan Hutchinson breaking his leg against the Cowboys in Week 6. By the end of the regular season, nearly all of Aaron Glenn's first-string defense was on the shelf, and those issues fully came to a head in the divisional round as Detroit was stunned by Jayden Daniels and an upstart Washington Commanders team hanging 45 points on the Lions to pull off a shocking upset at Ford Field. 2024 record: 15-2 Regular-season result: 1st in NFC North Playoff result: Lost to Commanders in divisional round Notable departures: OL Frank Ragnow (retirement), CB Carlton Davis Notable additions: CB D.J. Reed (free agency), DL Tyliek Williams (draft), OL Tate Ratledge (draft) The Atlanta Falcons talked loudly and publicly this offseason about their desire to add more edge rushers. What they talked about more quietly among themselves was their need to add more actual edge, as in the sort of feistiness and fight that was too often lacking on defense last season. Coach Raheem Morris said: 💬 'All the really great football players that I have been around, they have edge. Part of us becoming what we want to be is acquiring players with some natural edge. There's going to be some violence and physicality that's going to be required to be a part of this football team.' Enter James Pearce Jr., the rookie edge rusher who has been all over the field through the first four days of training camp practices, including in the middle of two fights that delayed Sunday's practice but also added some energy that was missing at times from the 2024 Falcons. Outside linebackers coach Jacquies Smith added: 💬 'Defenses are supposed to be known as ferocious, violent, all the strong words that you can use, so when you can add a little bit of edge the right way, obviously we are always looking for guys like that. He's been proving it.' Read more on the 26th pick in the 2025 NFL draft below. GO FURTHER How Falcons rookie James Pearce Jr. is helping spark an attitude adjustment The calendar demands resolution to Terry McLaurin's hold-in. This week. In a perfect world, McLaurin won't like the result. Neither will the Commanders. But if both sides are serious about winning football games instead of negotiations, they'll get this done. It's time to stop talking philosophically and get McLaurin back on the field, after missing OTAs, mandatory minicamp and the first two weeks of training camp. Read more on the situation in Washington below. GO FURTHER The Commanders and Terry McLaurin have to end this, now, and make a deal After a sensational rookie year, Jayden Daniels looks to take another step forward in his second season as expectations surrounding the Washington Commanders are through the roof. The New England Patriots have a young, talented quarterback of their own in Drake Maye as the organization aims to get back to its winning ways under former player and new head coach Mike Vrabel.
