Local clubs need to adapt to encourage disability sports

Being a wheelchair user, I have often been told that there is no space for me in certain aspects of life.
I grew up on the ice rink as an ice dancer, followed by a performer on the big stage, but when I swapped my legs for my wheels, my whole world changed, and I found myself having to leave that life behind. Trying to get involved in something where I felt I 'fitted' never worked, especially when I was in a powerchair.

There are many disabilities out there that are catered for in the sporting world.
Still, every time I looked, I had the opinion that as I wasn't a manual wheelchair user, I had no upper body strength, lower body strength, or middle body strength, for that matter, I wouldn't be catered for.
Until last year.
While watching people train, I was approached and asked: 'Do you want to have a go?' I think I looked at people as if they had two heads. Since my wheels, I had never been asked to participate in a sport.
This is one reason ParalympicsGB started the 'Everybody Moves' campaign: so people could find a sport and get involved, no matter their ability.
No matter where I went, I was surprised by the accessibility to sports. British Rowing, something I never thought would be accessible, explained how they adapt the boats to the individual's needs. I have since received emails inviting me to their trial days. Being afraid of water, I think I'll sit this one out, though!
Sport isn't for everyone, and that is fine. These days, I am a more behind-the-computer-screen type of girl, but attending events and seeing people get involved in different sports they never thought possible was touching.
WheelPower holds trial days to allow people to try new, adaptable, and inclusive sports. Being asked to cover their events, including their upcoming Junior Games, is a privilege, as you see people through their journeys.
Finding a sport adapted to your disability can be even more challenging when you don't know where to start.

Adaptive sports are evolving. I recently discovered that a skating rink near me has a session once a week for people with disabilities, which allows manual wheelchairs onto the ice.
With the help of my PA, after 20 years next month, I will finally get back on the ice, and that is a feeling I cannot comprehend at the moment.
But more local clubs need to be adaptable, especially for children. However, most teachers are unaware of how to make these changes, so it can come down to individuals to show the clubs what can be done to make them more inclusive.
Starting a sport for someone with a disability can seem like a minefield. A year ago, I wouldn't have known where to look.
However, there are clubs out there. It is about researching, talking, and those who are not adaptable, trying to teach them, and all of us working together.

UFC star Tom Aspinall makes bold claim about future amid Jon Jones fight delay

The Brit has seemingly given up on a fight with the undisputed heavyweight champion and is now hoping to stay active inside the cage this year Tom Aspinall has his sights set on a busy end to the year and has expressed his frustration over the delay in securing a fight with Jon Jones. The interim heavyweight champion has been out of action since his win over Curtis Blaydes last July and is eager to get back in the octagon. Despite a challenging year waiting for Jones - who secured the undisputed title by submitting Ciryl Gane in 2023 and defended it against Stipe Miocic last November - Aspinall is ready to move on. ‌ Jones has teased staying on for another fight, but Aspinall suspects he's hung up his gloves and is eyeing other opportunities. The Wigan warrior told TNT Sports: "I'm sick of talking about myself, I mean, I think it's pretty clear to see that Jon Jones has retired, he doesn't want to fight me. We wish Jon all the best in the future, of course, but we want this heavyweight division active. ‌ "We want to give these contenders a chance to fight, we wanna have a defending champion, don't we? Why is this division so stagnant all the time? Let's make the heavyweight division great again and have an active defending UFC heavyweight champion, let's move on. I'm ready to fight, I wanna get two fights in before the end of the year so that's what we're doing. We finally have some movement, Jones has had a great career, I respect him, we know what he's done... Have a good life, we move on." It seems as if Aspinall has fully moved on after stating that 'Bones' is retired. Earlier this week, when asked about the agreement by UFC legends Daniel Cormier and Chael Sonnen on the Good Guy / Bad Guy podcast, the Brit said: "Nah man, Jon is retired. What are you talking about guys? "You guys don't follow Jon on social media? Me too [I don't follow him]. But the guy is living his best life. He's had a fantastic career, we all know. We know Jon's a religious man, so I want to say God bless him moving forward in what he does in his life and his career. "We move on. I'm the undisputed heavyweight champion of the world. I'm ready to take on all comers, get this division moving again. Us guys have been waiting around too long, the contenders are getting sick of it, everybody is getting sick of it, even the fans are getting sick of this stuff. So Jon's retired and it's time that we move on." If Aspinall has in fact moved on, the UFC faces a challenging task in finding a suitable opponent for the British fighter. The most logical match-up for Aspinall at this point would be Gane - who narrowly won his last fight against Alexander Volkov in December via a split decision.

And promoter Eddie Hearn revealed talks with Saudi boxing boss Turki Alalshikh have taken place in the meantime. Hearn told BoxingScene: "We are actually discussing a two-fight deal with Riyadh Season. 'We've been doing that, [Turki Alalshikh] said that on the night of Canelo [vs. William Scull, May 3], when we had our meeting, and that's the plan really. Joshua, 35, snubbed a rematch with Dubois, 27, the IBF champion. Dubois now rematches Oleksandr Usyk on July 19 at Wembley two years after losing to the Ukrainian. Fury, 36, was twice beaten by Usyk, 38, in 2024 and announced his shock retirement in January. 'And if we don't fight those guys, we'll fight, and then maybe we'll follow one of those guys next year.' Josh Kelly played against Jordan Pickford but now eyes title fight against 'freak' champ who's as tall as Anthony Joshua Two names also on Joshua's radar is Dillian Whyte and American Jared Anderson. Hearn said: 'Two guys that have been discussed, but nothing concrete." AJ knocked out Whyte in 2015 and they were due to meet in a rematch in August 2023. That was until Whyte returned "an adverse finding" in his pre-fight drug test - having to subsequently withdraw. He blamed the failed test on a tainted supplement and returned last year with wins in Ireland and Gibraltar. Anderson, 25, meanwhile was KO'd by Martin Bakole, 31, last August but beat Marios Kollias in his February comeback. 3 Joshua was due to rematch Dillian Whyte in 2023 Credit: Richard Pelham / The Sun
