Australian Olympic equestrian suspended over horse-whipping video
The 66-year-old, who represented Australia in dressage at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, said in a statement he had been acting in the animal's 'best interests'.
The video, originally shared to US-based Facebook account Dressage Hub, showed him striking the stallion repeatedly with a narrator saying the horse was 'traumatised in every state'.
Equestrian Australia said it was 'extremely alarmed and concerned'.
'Equestrian Australia has imposed a provisional suspension of this person's membership of Equestrian Australia and their rights, privileges and benefits associated with their membership,' it added.
The ban will remain in place pending an investigation by its integrity unit.
Ryan, a former three-time Australian three-day event champion, defended his actions, saying it had been a 'life or death moment' for the horse, named Nico.
He said the six-year-old had always been a 'problem child' and was destined for the knackery after an incident with a family friend that left her in intensive care.
'I felt obliged to the horse to just have a look and see if it was possibly salvageable,' he said.
'That video was a life or death moment for Nico and I genuinely had to try my very hardest to see if Nico would consider other options.
'All of this transpired sincerely with the horse's best interests the sole consideration. Unbelievably, it was so successful for everyone except me with the release of this video.'
He claimed the video was two years old and posted by a disgruntled ex-employee, with Nico now thriving in a new home.
Three-time Olympic dressage gold medallist Charlotte Dujardin missed the Paris Games last year following a different horse-whipping controversy.
The British rider was banned just days before the start of the Olympics after a video emerged showing her repeatedly striking a horse on its legs.

Rallying-FIA announces tender for new WRC promoter
(Reuters) -Motorsport's governing body announced on Thursday a tender process to replace Red Bull and German investment company KW25 as commercial rights holders of the World Rally Championship (WRC). The International Automobile Federation (FIA) said JPMorgan would act as financial advisor to Red Bull and KW25, who jointly own Munich-based WRC Promoter GmbH -- the commercial arm responsible for media, sponsorship rights, and television production. The promoter, which also oversees the European Rally Championship, took over the WRC rights in 2013 and still had seven years remaining on the contract, according to sources. Reuters reported a year ago that the owners were preparing a potential sale with a target valuation of up to 500 million euros ($581 million). The WRC has been in existence since 1973 and this year features 14 rounds on different continents with the showcase Monte Carlo Rally opening the season in January. "The tender process for the commercial rights holder is a big opportunity for a new enterprise to take the championship into its next chapter with renewed energy and investment," said the FIA's deputy president for sport Malcolm Wilson. "We will work with Red Bull and KW25 to find the best fit for this important role." The FIA said the championship had surged in popularity with a cumulative television audience of 1.3 billion and more than four million on-site visitors in 2024, with huge further growth potential. Paraguay makes its debut hosting a round of the championship this weekend and the sport is looking into a future round in the United States. Private university reminds students of campus support services following tragedies
KUALA LUMPUR: Tunku Abdul Rahman University of Management and Technology (TAR UMT) has taken proactive steps to support the affected student community following the death of its two students at a Setapak condominium. The university said in two separate statements that it has mobilised necessary support and care for the friends of the deceased students. "The university has also reached out to the student's friends and housemates to provide support and care for them as they cope with this tragedy. "The university remains committed to doing what is necessary with regard to these cases," it said on Wednesday (Aug 20). The university also said it is carrying out an internal investigation and will be working closely with the police on the case. Meanwhile, TAR UMT has also utilised its social media platforms to inform students about available counselling and support services. On Facebook, the university reassured students with a message encouraging them to reach out for help. "We're here to listen, to support, and to be there for you. "Our counselling and support services are always available to provide a safe and confidential space for you to talk," the post read. In addition to individual counselling, the university's Student Affairs Department is offering free online webinars focused on suicide prevention, exclusively for TAR UMT KL Main Campus students. These sessions, part of a series titled "See the Signs, Know the Truth, Be the Help," aim to provide students with practical ways to care for themselves and support others. A separate session is also available in Mandarin. Earlier on Wednesday, two university students fell to their deaths from the same condominium in Setapak on the same day.
