Injured Fourie to aid De Villiers as Stormers without Springbok Malherbe for Benetton URC clash

Springbok flank Deon Fourie won't play for the Stormers again this season, but will still play a crucial role in their last-gasp push for a United Rugby Championship playoff spot.
Forwards coach Rito Hlungwani confirmed on Tuesday that the 38-year-old loose forward sustained a broken tibia in last Saturday's 34-29 win over Connacht at Cape Town Stadium.
Fourie had been on the pitch for just a minute when he tackled Connacht flank Conor Oliver, and stood up gingerly before going off, and is now unlikely to feature for the Boks in 2025 either.
Stormers coach John Dobson said afterwards that he believed Fourie's leg was broken, and Hlungwani added that the veteran forward would be missed as a player, but would assist in helping to develop his replacement, Paul de Villiers.
'I think it's a broken tibia, so he will be out for a while – probably the season, I think,' Hlungwani said.
'Losing a player of Deon's calibre and experience is a major blow, but Deon was in yesterday and was in today.
'He's one guy that really contributes to the team in totally different ways.
'So, not having him on the field is a major blow, but he will still be present. He's really put Paul de Villiers under his wing.
'He was in the office today analysing the game with him.
'So, we still gain in that regard, but it is tricky and tough not having him on the field. But we are moving forward, and he is helping us in the right way as well.'
Star No 8 Evan Roos added that while it was disappointing to see Fourie sidelined, he was looking forward to watching De Villiers' progress.
'It's sad to see somebody get injured, so I really feel for him and hope everything goes well and smoothly,' Roos said on Tuesday.
'In terms of leadership, Brannas is a big voice and a big character in the team. He brings a lot of calmness, with all the experience that he has.
'So, that is definitely something we will miss out on. He works really hard and is a big part of our team, and is a real Province man.
'But I'm very excited for Paul. He is a good player, and me and him get along quite well.
'He is a good person, good man, and I'm happy that he's getting an opportunity. He works hard, and he's always keen to learn – which is always good to see for someone just getting into the system.'
Hlungwani said that there were no new injury concerns ahead of Saturday's URC clash against Benetton at Cape Town Stadium (6.15pm start).
Bok prop Frans Malherbe won't be resuming training this week, with Hlungwani stating that there was no further update on when he would return to action from a back problem that saw him miss the Connacht encounter.
Sazi Sandi is likely to continue at No 3 against Benetton this weekend, with Neethling Fouché still suspended.

They face Leinster in Dublin in the semi-finals on Saturday afternoon and depending on the result, it could be the swansong for the Free State native. He recently returned to the side following a ban and immediately made his impact felt, playing 72-odd minutes against the Stormers in the URC quarters. He terrorised his compatriots and spearheaded the Glasgow defence and breakdown play to help them to a comfortable 36-18 victory. He's been a thorn in the side of the Stormers, especially in the tournament, and seemed to always lift his game when facing the men from the Cape. In last season's final against the Bulls, Venter also made a telling impact to help his side lift the URC title against the odds at Loftus Versfeld in Pretoria. Now, he is on the cusp of exiting the side that became his second home since leaving South Africa, and ahead of a move to French Pro D2 club Brive, he is poised to put his best foot forward. According to Venter, after a directive from higher-ups in Scottish rugby, the Warriors must focus on young talent and not foreign soldiers from next season. Despite being forced to leave, Venter told BBC Sport he loved his time in Glasgow and would've liked to extend his stay after two seasons there. 'It's a tricky question,' he said after being quizzed about leaving. 'It's also from above and all the stuff going on in Scotland regarding foreign players. That's basically one of the main reasons. I love this place, and I'd love to stay, but... (let's) leave it there. 'They want more Scottish players, and I understand that is their plan going forward and I respect that. I am not Scottish, so it's a privilege to be here and give back to the club and the country. If they make their plans and have a will to make Scottish rugby better, I hope they succeed in it.' The 33-year-old played for the Cheetahs before venturing overseas to Japan for a season. He returned and played for the Sharks in an unsuccessful spell before signing for Glasgow. Last season, he was one of the standout campaigners during their title-winning run. He has been more than a handy replacement when the Scotland players have been in camp during the Six Nations and that experience is what they will likely miss going forward. Venter, however, is looking forward to playing another big role this weekend when they take on Leinster in the semi-finals. He is also hopeful there will be a title-defending match after this weekend's duel at the Aviva Stadium.

Bongeka Gamede had put the defending African champions in the driving seat in the 74th minute, as she rattled the roof of the net with a thunderbolt free-kick. On paper, it was the perfect day in the office for Desiree Ellis and her troops, but the coach will know that Banyana's work is still cut out for them ahead of Wafcon next month. The Copper Queens' talisman Barbra Banda had many openings in this game, especially in the first half. She only lacked support, which could have punished Banyana. So, given there'll be no room for error at Wafcon, Banyana need to be at their best in defence ... if they are to plug their shortcomings. What was also disappointing about Banyana's defence is that they had their regular defence, including central defender Bambanai Mbane and Lebohang Ramalepe. The latter seemingly forgot her role as a defender early on, as she was mostly high up the field, instead of keeping Banyana's shape in defence. Even with her adding numbers up-front, Seoponsenwe and Amogelang Motau were still not clinical in the early stages of the match. Ramalepe was fully converted to a forward in the second half and that swung the tide in Banyana's favour, as Gamede and Seoposenwe chipped in with their all important goals. Ellis will put her head on the block in the next few weeks and announce her final squad for Wafcon as she's already naming the preliminary squad. Photo: Backpagepix Image: BackpagePix Sharks loose-forward Siya Kolisi feels their recent ability to get over the line in close matches without playing Champagne rugby, and to finish strongly, is a sign of the growing maturity and fighting spirit among the franchise's players. The Durban side edged a number of tight encounters on their march to Saturday's United Rugby Championship semi-final against the Bulls at Loftus, built largely on strong second-half performances. This was perhaps most clearly demonstrated in their nail-biting victory over Munster at the Shark Tank last weekend. The Sharks needed a dramatic penalty shoot-out to overcome the Irish side, with the match tied at 24-24 after extra-time. The nature of those results has prompted criticism of the Sharks' style of play in some quarters, with inevitable comparisons drawn to the more clinical Bulls. Kolisi, however, prefers to focus on the resolve and resilience within the team — qualities also evident in narrow away victories over Edinburgh and Ulster in the pool stages. 'What we learnt about ourselves as a team is that we can fight, especially in games like that, where in previous years we would have lost those matches,' the Springbok captain said at a media conference on Tuesday. 'There's growth in the team, growth in the squad as well — guys coming in when others are unavailable and standing up to the challenge. 'I remember in the game here at home against the Bulls, there were a lot of guys who couldn't play, and those who stepped in fought hard. That's what we do. 'At the end of the day, people will say what they want about how you played, but the result is what matters. Of course, you want to play well and improve, but we were able to fight at Edinburgh, and again at Ulster, and that's what counts. It's hard to win away, and we managed to do it even when we weren't at our best.'
