Bill Maher Slams High-Profile Democrats For Being Too 'Afraid' To Appear On His Show
Maher named several Democrats in his monologue, including former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, former Vice President Kamala Harris and former Presidents Bill Clinton and Barack Obama. He first poked fun at Newsom, however, for his 'perfect hair.'

'Hey, at least Gavin comes here,' said Maher. 'People ask me all the time, 'Why haven't you ever had Hillary or Bill Clinton on? Why didn't you have Kamala on during the last campaign?' You think we don't ask? We ask these people every week. They say no.'
Maher noted that it took eight years 'and a petition' to get Obama on his show in 2016.
'And these are people, all people, I voted for,' the 'Real Time' host continued. 'Think about that: they're afraid to come on the show of a guy who voted for them. The Republicans? They show up, and when they do, they take their beating like a man.'

Maher went on to play a montage of him sparring with past Republican guests, including former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, Trump's former U.S. Attorney General Bill Barr, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, Texas Sen. Ted Cruz and former Trump aide Steve Bannon.
He then reiterated that he 'would love' to have more notable Democrats on the show, specifically naming Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.), Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) and New York City's Democratic mayoral nominee, Zohran Mamdani.
'But I can't subpoena the guests,' joked Maher. 'And I can't fix that what the Democrats are scared of, more than anything else… is being primaried from the far-left, even though most Democrats are not far-left. They're mild-mannered and moderate, at least in my bathhouse.'
Warren has notably appeared on the show six times between 2009 and 2017.
Other notable members of the Democratic Party who have sat down with Maher include House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.), former Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg and Obama's former chief of staff Rahm Emanuel.
Maher appeared to suggest on Friday that Democrats might win more elections if they came on his show. He cited former CIA analyst Sen. Elissa Slotkin (D-Mich.), who urged her party in April to shed their 'weak and woke' reputation and 'fucking retake the flag.'

The female-skewing Freakier Friday, reteaming Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan, is likewise grinning in its sophomore outing with an estimated haul $14.5 million from 3,975 cinemas for a worldwide cume of $86.3 million against a budget under $45 million. The body-swap comedy fell 50 percent domestically. Nobody 2 isn't the weekend's only new player, but is by far doing the best of the bunch. Spike Lee's prestige pic Highest 2 Lowest, which reunites him for the first time in 18 years with Denzel Washington, is opening in select theaters before debuting relatively quickly on Apple TV+ in early September. While Apple is making a major push into theatrical — 51: The Movie is one of the summer's biggest blockbusters and is getting a traditional release in cinemas — Highest 2 Lowest doesn't appear to be part of that strategy. A24, which partnered with Apple on Lee's latest movie, isn't even reporting grosses so far, but those with visibility into numbers being reported by some theaters suggest Highest 2 Lowest is doing tepid business for a movie with such a high-profile director and cast, not to mention a splashy world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival. The Lionsgate-distributed Americana — starring Sydney Sweeney opposite Paul Walter Hauser and Halsey — is bombing in its nationwide debut in 1,123 theaters. The pic opened to an estimated $500,000 for a sixteenth-place finish. The crime-heist movie, which has been well received by critics, has taken more than two years to arrive on the big screen after first premiering at SXSW in 2023. Lionsgate insists the film is part of a multi-platform strategy, including premium VOD, and that it is no way a disappointment, financial or otherwise. Americana opens in the wake of a media firestorm engulfing Sweeney after American Eagle dropped its 'Sydney Has Great Jeans' campaign July 23. Almost overnight, some TikTok users took offense to a campaign clip that features Sweeney saying, 'Genes are passed down from parents to offspring, often determining traits like hair color, personality and even eye color. My jeans are blue.' They claimed the comments promote eugenics since Sweeney is white, blond-haired and blue-eyed. While countless users dismissed such theories as nonsense, the debate went viral. Even President Donald Trump weighed in after The Guardian reported that Sweeney registered as a Republican in Florida prior to the 2024 election. More to come. Newsom's Map Gambit Is a Short-Term Play
Gavin Newsom is doing what he does best: seeking attention. The California governor is succeeding even as his policies fail. He proposes to redraw the state's congressional map to parry a similar move by Texas Republicans. It's a gambit to elevate himself as his party's standard-bearer. It's also a blue herring. Denounce Donald Trump and Texas Republicans for undermining democracy, and maybe Americans will overlook how Democrats have entrenched one-party rule in California to such ill effect.
