BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) — Pete Hanna, the namesake of the Samford University's football stadium and basketball arena, died at 88 years old Sunday.
Hanna, former CEO and chairman of Hanna Steel, was a significant philanthropist for the university, going back to his days as a student-athlete, where he played halfback, center and linebacker from 1955-58. Though he graduated from the University of Alabama in 1960, he spent years as a Samford trustee.
'I have been blessed beyond my fondest dreams, and I am pleased that as a steward of the Lord Jesus Christ, I have a part in Samford's future,' Hanna said, according to his university obituary. 'This is a most unusual university, and we want it to continue to be outstanding as an academic university and a Christian university.'
The Pete Hanna Center was named after him during its 2006 groundbreaking. It's home to the basketball and volleyball teams, athletics department, Samford Athletics Hall of Fame and hosts commencement ceremonies.
During the Bulldogs' game against Furman in October 2023, the school's football stadium was renamed for Hanna, who was presented with a golden key to the facility.

'Pete had a loving heart, which was apparent by the way he operated his company, cared for his employees and generously sought to improve the community,' said Martin Newton, director of athletics at Samford. 'The blessings he extended toward Samford athletics and our entire institution won't be forgotten. Knowing that his impact will stretch for generations, so many of us are grateful for having known and befriended such a wonderful man.'
Hanna served for 14 years in the Alabama Army National Guard and retired as captain. According to his family's obituary, they will receive friends at the Southern Heritage Funeral Home from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday. A celebration of Hanna's life will follow.
'With a legacy extending beyond the facilities that bear his name, Pete Hanna provided a lasting impact of compassion, humility and service,' said Samford President Beck Taylor in a statement. 'While embracing his calling to become an industry leader, he stayed true to the principles of Christian stewardship and inspired others to do the same. The Samford family is grateful for having known Mr. Hanna, and we celebrate the life of a friend who embodied the best our university has to offer.'

PASTOR COREY BROOKS: I'm building hope on Chicago's notorious South Side

After the Civil Rights victories, many folks on the South Side of Chicago expected things to get better. It was already a solid working class community with a grocery store, a delicatessen, and other small businesses. Instead the liberal policies that came out of the post-60s era nuked us into a devastating culture of one thing that always strikes me is that not one new building since the 1960s has been built in my neighborhood. McDonalds left years ago and so did Walgreens. Both structures sit empty. The Projects which takes up most of my neighborhood has declined precipitously since its days of providing apartments to working class families. Nobody owns anything. So the gangsters claimed ownership and renamed the projects after their friend who was gunned down: is why I consider it a miracle that I along with my staff at Project H.O.O.D. have been fortunate to start the building of a nearly 100,000 square foot Leadership and Economic Opportunity Center. To see the construction, the cranes, the daily arrival of construction materials, the cement poured and on has been nothing short of amazing. We are not just building a center but a symbol of hope. I know this might sound cliched for the more cynical folks, but there is nothing cliched about hope in my neighborhood. As I mentioned earlier, we have had generations of children born into a world where they know the government as one of their parents. So, by building this center we are teaching these children that anything is possible and attainable. The blight they were born into does not have to be permanent. They can be the change just like I decided one day to beauty of this center, once built, is that it will help them develop into intelligent and developed individuals with ambitions for a good career and life. Inside those beams and boars, there will be job training, financial literacy, trauma counseling, trade school, music and arts center, a STEM lab, entrepreneurship accelerators, and a private Christian school for boys who have been written off by the system. By giving the youths in our neighborhood this opportunity, we are creating the possibility that they will one day be able to follow the path of opportunity of their own we still have a ways to go when it comes to finishing the building. We have completed 40% of the progress so far. The steel is up, the cables being wired, the elevator shafts being built, the walls forming, and the floors have been installed. The vision is becoming visible. What started as a rooftop dream is now a street-level revolution. I have already noticed changes in the neighborhood culture. Moms and Dads bring their young ones to watch the building being constructed. Kids tell me they can't wait to visit and that they're going to bring their friends. The older residents tell me they never thought they would see such a sight in their lifetimes. All of them keep asking me when the center will finally open.I tell them soon, as soon as possible. We have received no government handouts for this work and we have been pushing forward to stretch every dollar with faith, grit, and sacrifice. We still have to raise more funds to build this center as a debt-free enterprise so that every dollar we have goes to our kids, the future of a day goes by when I don't thank the people of America for their donations. Their generosity made this miracle possible. I also want to thank the team at Fox News Media for giving me this platform to speak to America — I can never repay them for their generosity. For those of you who are reading this and are wondering if change is still possible in my neighborhood as well as the greater America — I say look at this building. It's not just steel and concrete. It is proof. It is proof that when people gather around a purpose, poverty can be pushed back, violence can be replaced with a purpose, and despair can give way to you are in America, you can be the change for a better future.

Woman Says Her Friend is Throwing Herself a Bridal Shower but She Isn't Engaged

A woman has shared on Reddit that her friend is on a "rushed timeline" to get married and is hosting her bridal shower before she gets engaged The bride-to-be plans to get engaged two weeks before the wedding itself, the woman claims 'Almost all of us have decided against going to the shower, basically due to the principle of it being inappropriate throwing yourself a bridal shower months before you will even be engaged,' the woman saysA woman says she's decided not to attend the bridal shower of her friend who is yet to be engaged. And she isn't the only one. The woman took to Reddit to share that her friend is eager to host a bridal shower while asking for 'high priced and luxurious things.' And after speaking with a group of their mutual friends — who have known each other for 24 years and counting — many of them are in agreement and have also decided not to attend. 'I know that they have a rushed timeline since she wants to get married 2 weeks after they are engaged, but it is shocking being invited to a bridal shower for someone who isn't even engaged and doesn't have a venue booked yet for a wedding less than 2 months away,' the woman writes. The couple began dating in January and within their first week of dating they had already discussed marriage and signed up for marriage classes offered through their church, the woman says of her friend and her partner, explaining that they initially set a goal of becoming married by the beginning of September. is now available in the Apple App Store! The woman claims the boyfriend of her friend has demonstrated 'a lot of very concerning behaviors' since the inception of their relationship. She describes him as 'very religious' and says he wants to remain celibate until marriage. The 24-year-old guy has also expressed his concerns to his 29-year-old girlfriend about her ability to conceive due to her age. 'He made my friend get re-baptized since she was not a virgin,' the woman claims. The man has also asked her friend to swear off TV shows, like Friends and Bridgerton, because they are 'satanic and pornographic and compromise their Christian values,' the woman writes of her friend's relationship. The woman claims that not only are the friends concerned at the rate her friend is pursuing this relationship, but also her parents. The couple have never lived alone outside of their parent's homes, the woman writes. 'So neither of them have experience taking care of themselves without their parents' assistance,' she shares. Whenever the OP (original poster) tries to gently bring the conversation up to her friend, the friend responds defensively and 'always insists that they don't have a traditional relationship, but that they both know what they want and they are best friends,' the woman writes. Within three weeks of their romance, the woman says her friend found a 'fake topaz ring on the ground at a grocery store.' She then found a ring box to put it in and gave to her boyfriend so that he could pop the question after their sixth month anniversary. The friend shared photos of the ring along with the plan of the sixth month anniversary proposal that would be followed by a wedding one-to-two weeks later. A month ago, the bride-to-be went wedding dress shopping and 'said yes to the dress,' the woman writes. When she congratulated her friend, she took the opportunity to tell her that the date of the wedding was moved up to the beginning of August. However with that, the bride-to-be has yet to send out her wedding invitations and book a venue for the date. On May 28, the woman says she was surprised after receiving her bridal shower invitation to find that the date for the occasion is less than two weeks after the invite was sent. 'I looked at the registry, and she is asking for a lot of very high priced and luxurious things on a very short notice,' the woman writes after receiving the bridal shower invite. Never miss a story — sign up for to stay up-to-date on the best of what PEOPLE has to offer, from celebrity news to compelling human interest stories. The woman also writes that the pre-engagement bridal shower is just something that she can't get past, despite knowing that they are on a 'rushed timeline.' The woman brought it to their mutual friend group's attention and many are in agreement over the issue. 'Almost all of us have decided against going to the shower, basically due to the principle of it being inappropriate throwing yourself a bridal shower months before you will even be engaged,' the woman says of their conversations. 'There is nothing set in stone to demonstrate they will go through with this wedding other than saying they plan to get married in August,' the woman continues. The woman claims it's unfair to their friend group to ask them to spend money on expensive gifts when the women in the group are already busy planning their own weddings with their long term boyfriends, or are in the process of purchasing a home or are pregnant. 'It's too soon to know what the ramifications will be of having her entire friend group not show up for her bridal shower, but it will be interesting to see how the next 2 months of wedding planning go,' the woman admits. In the comments section, fellow Reddit users offered their take on the pre-engagement bridal shower. 'I bet she has a timeline of 'being married before I'm 30' and she's sticking to it,' one user responded, while another wrote, 'Your friend group should all pitch in and send her the series DVD box-set of Friends.' Suicide bomber killed in Uganda on Christian holy day, army says

Two people who the Ugandan army describe as "armed terrorists" have been killed in the capital, Kampala, as the country marks Martyrs Day - a Christian celebration to commemorate the faithful who died in the 19th Century. A counter-terrorism unit "intercepted and neutralized" the two, one of whom was a suicide bomber, in the upmarket suburb of Munyonyo, army spokesperson Chris Magezi said in a post on X. The incident took place near the Roman Catholic Munyonyo Martyrs' Shrine, where a small group had gathered to pray, local media reported. Reports also cited an explosion, with an eyewitness telling Uganda's Daily Monitor newspaper that "the explosive detonated midway towards the church". There were no other casualties, the Reuters news agency reports. The army spokesperson did not confirm the blast, but added that the authorities were on "heightened alert". One of those killed was a female "suicide bomber laden with powerful explosives", Col Magezi said. Footage from Uganda's NBS Television, showed security and forensics personnel at the scene of the incident, after having sealed off the area. Col Magezi told Reuters that it was believed the two people were linked to the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF), which has been linked to the Islamic State (IS) group. The ADF has not yet commented. Uganda has historically faced threats from the group. Last year, the army warned citizens that the ADF was planning to attack places of worship, public events, schools and urban areas. A year earlier, in 2023, the group was accused of carrying out a fatal attack on a Ugandan school which led to the killing of nearly 40 students. The Martyrs Day event, one of the largest Christian pilgrimages in Africa, draws millions of believers each year to honour 45 people, made up of 22 Catholics and 23 Anglicans, who were killed between 1885 and 1887 on the orders of Kabaka Mwanga II of Buganda for refusing to renounce their faith. The monarch demanded they revert back to their traditional religion, but they refused and were accused of disobeying him and later burned to death for it.
