4 standouts from Day 2 of Patriots' joint practices with Vikings

USA Today3 days ago
The New England Patriots battled it out with the Minnesota Vikings for a second straight day at Thursday's joint practice between the two teams.
There was a heavier focus on red zone work during the competitive team periods, and the Vikings seemed to get the better of the Patriots in this practice. Vikings quarterback J.J. McCarthy was missing All-Pro wide receiver Justin Jefferson and still managed to carve up the Patriots' defense.
Perhaps the most concerning part of the practice was the poor offensive line performance, particularly on the left side. It's important to note that the Vikings were a playoff team with 14 wins last season. Even without Jefferson, they are loaded at the skilled positions, and they have one of the best defenses in the NFL. This was always going to be a tough out for a young Patriots team.
Here were the four standout players from Day 2 of joint practices with the Vikings:
WR Efton Chism III
Efton Chism III was the clear standout working with the second-team unit for the Patriots. The undrafted rookie wide receiver has come on strong in the last two weeks of training camp practices, and he kept that momentum going against a Vikings defense that mostly held the Patriots in check. He had a strong connection with veteran quarterback Joshua Dobbs throughout the day.
DT Christian Barmore
On a day when J.J. McCarthy had his way with the Patriots' defense, veteran defensive tackle Christian Barmore was credited with two sacks at Thursday's practice. It was one of the few positive performances for a unit that didn't have many answers for the Vikings' offense. When healthy, Barmore is one of the best defensive tackles in the league. He clearly wasn't going down without a fight.
WR Kayshon Boutte
Patriots second-year wideout Kayshon Boutte connected with Drake Maye for the play of the day to close out the practice. He hauled in a 40-yard bomb from the young quarterback with three defenders in the vicinity, resulting in multiple Patriots players running onto the field to celebrate. It was a highlight-reel play that lifted some of the stench from a tough training camp practice.
QB Drake Maye
This wasn't the best showing from the Patriots' offense, but Drake Maye wasn't at fault for those issues. There wasn't much separation from receivers, and the offensive line was a complete disaster. Yet, Maye still completed tight-window throws and didn't turn the ball over. His best throw of the practice was the Hail Mary touchdown connection with wideout Kayshon Boutte to end the session.

Vikings coach Kevin O'Connell drops F-bomb during live TV interview in preseason bout vs Patriots

Minnesota Vikings' Kevin O'Connell gave a perfect example as to why NFL head coaches are not mic'd up on gameday. While other professional sporting events have mic'd up moments during live broadcasts, the NFL usually saves time for potential edits with that because of some, well, fruitful language. But with the NFL in the midst of preseason, the Vikings' broadcast decided to mic'd up O'Connell to provide some more entertainment for the fans watching at home. However, the live interview led to an F-bomb being dropped by the Vikings' lead man. During the third quarter in the game between the Vikings and New England Patriots, O'Connell was on the Fox 9 broadcast when he was answering a question while watching a play unfold. He didn't think of censoring himself after seeing something he didn't like. "I'm excited about this year's team and excited about this play-call, fellas," O'Connell told the broadcasters. "We've got a fast-motion…Oh no! F--- … It's coming back." The reason for O'Connell's expletive was noticing illegal motion at the line of scrimmage before the ball was even snapped. So, though the play would've gotten the Vikings a first down, it was called back for the penalty instead. It may not have been O'Connell's first-team offense on the field, but he's expecting his team to play sound football no matter who's in the game. The Vikings ended up losing to the Patriots, 20-12, though the expected starting quarterback, 2024 first-round pick, J.J. McCarthy didn't suit up yet again for the team's second preseason game. However, McCarthy has shined thus far in training camp practices, including joint work with the Patriots this week. McCarthy missed the entire 2024 season before it even began due to a meniscus tear. But O'Connell's Vikings went a surprising 14-3 with Sam Darnold at the helm. With Darnold now the starting quarterback for the Seattle Seahawks, it's McCarthy's show heading into his second year. O'Connell is hoping that he doesn't have to spew that many expletives from the sideline this season, as the Vikings are looking to get back into the playoffs.

Where should fantasy managers look to draft TreVeyon Henderson?

Yahoo Fantasy's Matt Harmon and Justin Boone examine the fantasy outlook for the Patriots rookie RB TreVeyon Henderson through two preseason games. Hear the full conversation on the 'Yahoo Fantasy Forecast' podcast - and subscribe on Apple Podcasts, Spotify or wherever you listen. View more Video Transcript The star of the preseason, let's say, is Travon Henderson. I think he's probably going to be the picture on this show. Um, you know, we had a clip that got posted last week when we talked about him, and I always find it funny when you talk about a player who's kind of on the rise like this, especially a rookie, especially in the summer, and you get people responding to it and some people are responding to it saying like, yeah, obviously, we already know that guy's great. How, how, why are you talking about him? It's a waste of time, right? And then you get people like, you know. Mad that you're going to push his ADP up, that they don't want you talking about him because they're not going to be able to get him at the same price that they've been getting him at in their mock drafts. Like, all of that is so funny to me. I love those comments. Keep them coming. I laugh when I see them, and we're not going to stop talking about guys that are on the rise, even if they are obvious players, because we're trying to throw that blanket over all of this, right? And there's some people that no ball and are hardcore fantasy players, and there's some people like some of my friends that just show up. This time of year, and they're trying to play catch up on who's on what team and what's going on, and we got to do stuff for them as well. We got to make sure they know about somebody like Travon Henderson who has just been crushing it, right? And we don't have to spend a ton of time because we've already talked about him on the show, but he continues to look great. 8 touches for 50 scrimmage yards and a touchdown through 2 preseason games. It just gives you like that glimpse of what he's capable of. And Rhamondre Stevenson is still going to be involved. I said this when we did the running back show the other day. When Jamir Gibbs had his rookie season, David Montgomery was still involved, and Jamir Gibbs on a per game basis was the RB 11 in half PPR fantasy points per game. So we could see a very big season from Henderson even if Stevenson is still getting a lot of work in that offense. I'm going to take him in the 4th round. That's a smash pick in the 4th round, even though we were getting him in the 5th and maybe even the 6th earlier this summer. Take him in the 4th. The third, I've seen him going in some leagues, that might be a little bit rich for me. He might pay that off, but I don't think you need to go that high with it. If someone wants to take him in the third, I'm gonna let them do it, and I'm gonna find somebody else. Close

Vikings' male cheerleaders fire back at critics amid social media frenzy

The Minnesota Vikings came under fire on social media ahead of the start of the preseason schedule because the team had two male cheerleaders on its squad. Blaize Shiek and Louie Conn have fired back at critics in social media posts. "Wait…did someone say our name?" Shiek wrote in a post on Instagram with Conn ahead of the Vikings' preseason game against the New England Patriots. Pictures of Shiek in a Vikings cheerleading uniform sparked a frenzy and a debate about male cheerleaders in the NFL. The Los Angeles Rams were the first organization to have male cheerleaders, which occurred in 2018. The Baltimore Ravens also featured several men on their cheerleading squad. The Carolina Panthers had the first transgender cheerleader on its squad until this year. The Vikings put out a statement in defense of Shiek and Conn. "Male cheerleaders have been part of previous Vikings teams and have long been associated with collegiate and professional cheerleading," the team told NBC News. "We support all our cheerleaders and are proud of the role they play as ambassadors of the organization." It is Sheik's first year as a Vikings cheerleader. He shared a post back in May, celebrating his rookie season. "Excited and honored to share that I am officially a 2025-26 Minnesota Vikings Cheerleader!" he wrote on social media. "I am so grateful for this journey, the support, and the opportunity to make a little history along the way. I hope to represent and inspire what's possible when you stay true to who you are." Conn was a part of the Iowa State Cyclones dance team before he joined the Vikings this season.
