Chelsea agree seven-year deal to sign João Pedro from Brighton
Chelsea have reached an agreement to sign João Pedro from Brighton. The Brazil forward was a target for Newcastle but was only interested in a move to Stamford Bridge.
Negotiations ramped up over the weekend and have concluded with Chelsea agreeing to pay a fee in excess of £50m for João Pedro. Brighton have been holding out for £60m for the 23-year-old, who signed from Watford two years ago.
Chelsea have been looking for a versatile attacker and João Pedro, who will sign a seven-year deal, is flying in from Brazil for a medical on Monday in the US. He will be able to join their squad for their Club World Cup quarter-final against Palmeiras on Friday night.
The west London club have also agreed to sign the Borussia Dortmund winger Jamie Gittens for a fee in the region of £55m. Gittens is not eligible to play for Chelsea at the Club World Cup as he has already featured for Dortmund in the US.
João Pedro missed Brighton's final two matches of the season after a training ground altercation with his teammate Jan Paul van Hecke. Yet Chelsea are convinced of the former Watford forward's talent. Sam Jewell brought João Pedro to Brighton and has since joined Chelsea's recruitment team. The club have lured a number of players and staff away from Brighton in the past three years.
The arrival of João Pedro will give Enzo Maresca more options in the final third. The head coach has been looking for a player capable of playing in a range of attacking positions, with Chelsea also considering a move for Mohammed Kudus. West Ham expect to receive bids from Kudus from elsewhere.
João Pedro is seen as a better fit than Christopher Nkunku and João Félix for Maresca's system. Félix is wanted by Benfica and is not part of the Club World Cup squad.

Nkunku is in the US and scored Chelsea's second against Benfica on Saturday but the France international has been out of favour and will be allowed to leave for the right price. Chelsea are also open to suitable offers for the England winger Noni Madueke.

MIAMI, June 29 (Reuters) - Harry Kane scored twice as Bayern Munich tamed Flamengo 4-2 in a tense affair at the Hard Rock Stadium on Sunday to set up a much-anticipated all-European quarter-final against Paris St Germain at the Club World Cup. Bayern, however, restored their two-goal lead before the interval when Goretzka, capitalising on the space left by the Flamengo defence, whipped a shot from outside the box past keeper Agustin Rossi. Tempers flared after a poor challenge by Pulgar on Kane as Flamengo struggled to contain their frustration. Filipe Luis's side pulled one back again 10 minutes into the second half, Jorginho sending Neuer the wrong way after they were awarded a penalty for a Michael Olise handball. The momentum had swung and Flamengo threatened with quick breaks, but Bayern held firm before finding the back of the net once more through Kane, who beat Rossi with another clinical low shot in the 73rd minute.

Consistent Molly Picklum leads the way after first win of WSL season in Brazil
Australian surfer Molly Picklum has shown why she is top of the women's World Surfing League standings, claiming her first win on tour this season in Saquarema, Brazil. After beating Canadian Erin Brooks 13.06 to 7.60 earlier on Sunday (Monday AEST) in the second semi-final, Picklum took on local Luana Silva in the final of the Vivo Rio Pro, stop nine of the competition. Picklum opened with a 6.83 and followed it up with the highest single wave score of the event for the women, an 8.17. Her final total of 15.00 was also the highest of the event for the women at Praia de Itauna. Silva's best two-wave score totalled 9.23, well short of being able to stop Picklum winning for the third time. 'She [Silva] has been surfing so well. I knew she's such a competitor and she's such a fighter,' said the 22-year-old from Gosford. 'I was pretty scared all the way until the end even though I had a couple of good scores. But yeah, she's capable of great things and I'm so happy to get that one over her.' The WSL Tour's most consistent women's surfer in 2025 – reaching the quarter-finals in eight out of nine events, including three finals – Picklum enjoys top spot with just two regular-season events remaining on the calendar. MIAMI, June 29 (Reuters) - Flamengo coach Filipe Luis said the football elite remained in Europe after the Brazilian side were beaten 4-2 in a last-16 clash against Bayern Munich at the Club World Cup on Sunday. Flamengo conceded two goals in the opening 10 minutes and although they twice reduced the arrears, Bayern were always in control as they set up a quarter-final tie with Champions League winners Paris St Germain. European teams were expected to dominate the expanded Club World Cup but sometimes struggled in the group phase while all Brazilian teams advanced and made an impression. Bayern, however, restored a measure of what the European football establishment would call "order" ahead of Inter Milan's clash with Brazil's Fluminense, also in the last 16. Palmeiras progressed by beating fellow Brazilian side Botafogo on Saturday. KEY QUOTES: Flamengo coach Luis Filipe: "The pressure they put on you is immense. They come at you with eight, 10 players. They deserved to win. "Our plan did work and we were able to apply pressure and create goal scoring opportunities but they were better than us, we're playing against the football elite.
