Zara Qairina's death: 'I'd want the truth, even if my family's involved'
He said the case should not be taken lightly, but urged the public not to politicise it or make any speculation that could lead to slander.
He said that although some had linked the death of the 13-year-old girl to prominent figures, the investigation would still be carried out with full transparency.
"We do not take this lightly and our directive is clear; there will be no compromise.
"People are saying all sorts of things, claiming she is the daughter of the Yang di-Pertua Negeri, or a minister - that is all talk.
"I don't care, but do not slander.
"The Malay proverb says, 'Don't build a palace over someone's grave.'
"This is a matter of death, it doesn't matter if it's the child of the poor or the rich, it's not a game.
"Even if it was my own family, I would certainly want to know the cause.
"I have instructed the Criminal Investigation Department chief in Kuala Lumpur (Criminal Investigation Department director Datuk M. Kumar) to personally monitor the case to prevent any issues.
"This is a Madani government - we do not protect anyone guilty of wrongdoing," he said when speaking at the 'Rancakkan Madani Kelantan' programme at the main hall of Universiti Sains Malaysia's Health Campus in Kubang Kerian today.
Anwar said he had no qualms if any revelations emerged following the post-mortem of the teenage girl.
Also present were Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abdul Kadir and Kelantan Menteri Besar Datuk Mohd Nassuruddin Daud.
Yesterday, the Attorney-General's Chambers (A-GC) directed the authorities to exhume the grave of the deceased, who had been buried after reportedly falling from a school dormitory building.
It said the move was among several instructions issued to enable a thorough investigation and to allow a post-mortem to be carried out on the remains.
After reviewing the full initial investigation report submitted by police, it found there was a need for further investigation to ensure all aspects of the case were examined comprehensively, it said.
Zara, was found unconscious after allegedly falling from her dormitory at SMKA Tun Datu Mustapha Limauan in Sabah.
She was confirmed dead at Queen Elizabeth I Hospital (HQEI) on July 17.
It was reported that her family had requested an inquest to determine whether there was any criminal element involved in her death.
The exhumation of the deceased's grave is likely to be carried out today once the order is obtained.

Malaysia uses AI to boost Quran appreciation among youth
KUALA LUMPUR: The government is intensifying efforts to foster Quran appreciation among younger generations by integrating modern technology, including artificial intelligence (AI). Datuk Dr Mohd Na'im Mokhtar, Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Religious Affairs), announced this during the closing ceremony of the 65th International Quran Recitation and Memorisation Assembly (MTHQA). Mohd Na'im emphasised the importance of nurturing a MADANI generation deeply connected to the Quran. He highlighted the role of religious agencies in advancing Quranic education. Darul Quran, under the Department of Islamic Development Malaysia (JAKIM), was recognised as a leading centre for professional tahfiz education. The institution has produced thousands of skilled huffaz dedicated to serving the nation and the Muslim community. The minister also introduced the Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) initiative for tahfiz students. This programme aims to equip huffaz with technical, entrepreneurial, and professional skills alongside Quran memorisation. Mohd Na'im stated that the MTHQA, themed 'Membangun Ummah MADANI', reflects the government's commitment to uplifting the ummah. He expressed hope that the event, first held in 1961, would remain a unifying platform for Muslims worldwide. The 65th MTHQA saw participation from 71 contestants representing 49 countries. Winners in the recitation and memorisation categories each received RM40,000, jewellery from YAPEIM, and additional prizes. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and other dignitaries attended the ceremony, reinforcing national support for Quranic initiatives. – Bernama

Cops to collect more evidence related to Zara's death
MACHANG: The police are focused on updating the investigation and collecting evidence related to the death of Form One student Zara Qairina Mahathir, says Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail ( pic ). 'The police are focusing on updating the investigation and collecting all evidence, and in carrying out this task, the police will not compromise on the principle of justice because we need to be fair to everyone involved, including the family of the late Zara and the school,' he said yesterday. He was met by reporters after the opening of 'Ijtimak Madani Ulama dan Guru Pondok Kelantan 2025' by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim at the Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) Machang campus here, Bernama reported. Saifuddin Nasution assured the public that the police will keep the people informed with the latest updates on the case. He said the move to exhume the body followed instructions by the Attorney General's Chambers (AGC). He added that he was briefed on the matter by the Inspector-General of Police Datuk Seri Mohd Khalid Ismail. In a statement, Bukit Aman said the need to exhume Zara Qairina's remains was based on the evaluation of the investigation paper. The AGC has studied the report, according to Bukit Aman Criminal Investigations Department director Comm Datuk M. Kumar. He said the findings from that study have led to a need to exhume the body of Zara Qairina to enable a post-mortem. This is to obtain additional information that is required to complete investigations regarding the case. He said justice will be upheld and that the police will refer the investigation paper back to the AGC in the near future. Family members believed that her death was linked to bullying at the school hostel. Zara Qairina's mother, through her lawyers, has asked for an inquest to be held and also for her body to be exhumed and a post-mortem conducted amid a social media campaign #JusticeforZara. On Friday, the AGC disclosed that it has directed the police to exhume the remains of Zara Qairina. The AGC stated that further investigations by the police were necessary to ensure all aspects of the case were thoroughly examined.

Kampung Angkat Madani initiative boosts rural growth
PETALING JAYA: The government's Kampung Angkat Madani programme has helped close the development gap between rural and urban areas through a community-focused approach, said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. In a written parliamentary reply, he said RM1 million had been channelled to each village involved in the initiative, with an additional RM200,000 allocated for technical and vocational education and training (TVET) projects. These cover both physical and non-physical components. 'For physical projects, the focus was on building basic infrastructure such as roads, street lighting, internet access and water supply. 'The non-physical projects include health screening, on-site verification of assistance and educational guidance for children who have dropped out of school,' he said in reply to Dr Mohammed Taufiq Johari (PH–Sungai Petani). Mohammed Taufiq had asked how the ministry was monitoring the programme's effectiveness in bridging the rural-urban gap in 2025. Anwar said the programme is monitored through the Madani Adopted Programme dashboard, a centralised platform where leadership teams track progress and submit monthly reports to the Implementation Coordination Unit of the Prime Minister's Department for follow-up action. He said the initiative had accelerated development in rural areas, ensured projects met local needs and delivered a broader impact to village communities. Overall, the programme is expected to directly improve the quality of life and socio-economic status of residents.
