Tottenham: Dejan Kulusevski to miss start of new season as Thomas Frank unsure on injury return date
Kulusevski underwent knee surgery in May, which ruled him out of the Europa League final against Manchester United, and he has not joined his team-mates for the start of pre-season.
Spurs face Reading and Luton away from home to start their list of friendly fixtures, before travelling to Hong Kong and South Korea to continue the preparations for the new campaign.
Kulusevski has been ruled out of those matches and is not close to a return, with Frank confirming that the 25-year-old will not be available for the start of the Premier League season on August 16 against Burnley.
'I don't like to put a timeline on it," Frank said.
"Put it this way, he's not ready for the first game of the season.'
Injuries were a serious problem for Tottenham last term, with a host of key first-team players missing significant chunks of the season.
Some of those issues remain, with Kulusevski and Radu Dragusin on the sidelines and James Maddison only just returning to part-training after a knee injury of his own.
Spurs have overhauled their medical department this summer. Adam Brett and Nick Davies, previously director of performance services and head of sports science, respectively, have both departed.
Nick Stubbings has followed Frank from Brentford to become medical lead and Tom Perryman has arrived as a strength and conditioning coach.
Asked if he felt Spurs were doing something wrong last season to be hit by so many injuries, Frank responded: "It's always difficult for me to look into what happened before me.
"Of course, we try to look into it and speak to people who were there last year and try to learn from it. For me, if there were mistakes that's another thing - I will definitely make some mistakes. I think we need to learn from that. We need to learn from last season.
"I have some ideas of what I think we can improve and do better. It should be possible to improve it."
He added: "Hopefully we can make good decisions, there will be that little bit of feeling sometimes with knowledge and numbers about when to rotate and when to rest. I think it's a big thing as well.
"But we know availability is crucial to us having success."

Kim wasn't thrilled with her performance off the tee, but said her shots into the greens and putting "really backed up my game. "Had a lot of good range, mid-range to long putts today, so that was nice," said Kim. "Just rolled it well." She teed off on 10 and had three birdies and a bogey in her first nine holes. After a birdie at the second she eagled the fifth, then closed with back-to-back birdies at eight and nine. "This week is always a bit of a birdie fest," Kim said. "Knowing that, I'm going to try not to get too ahead of myself and be greedy." Kaur also finished strong, closing birdie-birdie for a four-under 68 to join Kim on 11-under -- one shot clear of Akie Iwai, Pajaree Anannarukarn and Ashleigh Buhai. Overnight leader Adela Cernousek of France carded a three-over par 75 to fall seven shots off the pace. She missed a preseason game with a minor quad problem that, it turns out, should have been a red flag--Clark has not been healthy for a significant stretch of this WNBA season since. She played the first week of the WNBA season, then missed three weeks. Clark played for 10 days, then missed two more weeks. Finally, Clark came back for a week in early July, just before Indiana was to host the WNBA All-Star game, and got injured again. This time, it is her right groin that is the problem, and it's been a full four weeks since she last took the floor. Still, Clark--who had never missed a game in the WNBA or in college before this season-- has tried to stay engaged with her teammates and, perhaps more important, with the fans. That was again the case on Tuesday when the Fever played Dallas at home, a game televised on ESPN. Clark was still in civvies, but ESPN highlighted her before the game, putting in her time with fans signing autographs. "Caitlin Clark is for the fans," the post read. Caitlin Clark: 'I Do Feel This Responsibility' That's been important for Clark throughout her injury ordeal this season. She has appeared in only 13 games, but she understands that, for better or worse, she is the face of the new WNBA and a big part of the reason attention on the league has surged.
