
During N.F.L. Games, Going to Commercial Requires Its Own Playbook
Yet commercials are the lifeblood of the N.F.L. Without them, broadcasters could not afford to pay the league billions of dollars for rights fees, money that goes to paying players' salaries and much more.
Most games have 18 commercial breaks. A few timeouts, like at the end of the first and third quarters and at the two-minute warnings, are fixed. The league and networks avoid taking breaks if a team's opening drive of the game ends quickly, because they want fans to settle into the broadcast. If all goes well, the last commercials run at the two-minute warning in the fourth quarter.
Most commercial breaks, though, are chosen in real time as league executives, network producers and officials on the field look for natural breaks in the action. Finding them is more art than science because every game unfolds differently, with long drives, three-and-outs, injury timeouts and coaches' challenges.
'Our fans know that the commercial breaks are coming,' said Mike North, vice president of broadcast planning and scheduling at the N.F.L. 'The whole idea from where we sit is to try to use those breaks to cover downtime: resetting the field after a score; if there happens to be an injury, hopefully a minor one; or an instant replay review when the referee goes to the sideline.'
Their decisions will be seen on Sunday by more than 100 million viewers watching the Super Bowl and, advertisers hope, the 30-second commercials, some of which cost more than $8 million. The ads are so valuable that networks — Fox this year — add two extra breaks during the game, bringing the total to 20.
The league, networks and officials on the field call a minimum of four commercial breaks a quarter, but they try to balance between taking too many breaks that interrupt the flow of the game and waiting too long and risk having to cram in breaks as the game clock ticks down.
The logistics of determining when to call television timeouts require an intricate phone tree over a three-hour game. The referee, who controls when a game starts and stops and can overrule a request for a break, communicates with the back judge, who is in constant contact with two sideline officials standing near the 20-yard line. One of them wears a green hat and represents the league. The other has on orange gloves and works for the network.
They speak with Mr. North and other league officials in the press box and producers in the production truck outside the stadium. Sometimes, the decision to go to commercial is obvious, like after a score. At other times, the league and network take a break after an injury or a coach's challenge. The official wearing the orange gloves will cross his arms in an 'X' to signal that the network wants to go to break. The referee will then blow the whistle and stretch his arms out to form a T, meaning play is stopped for about 2 minutes and 20 seconds.
Sometimes, the green hat official will hold up a sign with ':30' printed on it to indicate that the network wants to take a 30-second timeout, not a full 2:20 break. When breaks end, the referee twirls his arm above his head three times, and the game clock restarts. If a team calls a timeout but the network does not want to go to commercial break, the official with the orange gloves will spin his arm in a circle above his head.
Some commercial timeouts are based on hunches. Early in the divisional round playoff game between the Los Angeles Rams and the Philadelphia Eagles, the Rams' coach, Sean McVay, challenged a call of an incomplete pass on third down. The officials ruled that the receiver had dropped the ball, but the replays were inconclusive, so Mr. North and NBC went to commercial because they bet the review would not be quick. When the break ended, the call was overturned and the Rams' drive continued. Mr. North felt good they could use a break seamlessly.
'As a producer, one of your No. 1 responsibilities is to create the best flow possible for the viewer at home,' said Fred Gaudelli, a longtime producer of prime-time N.F.L. games at ABC, ESPN and NBC. 'I produced games for 35 years, and I never did a game when all commercials didn't get in. They're going to get in. So don't sweat it. Let's do what's best for the viewer.'
Once or twice a season, a referee will restart the game during a break, forcing the network to cut away from the commercials. If networks are unable to play every commercial, they will make it up to an advertiser later in the season. There is no such option with the Super Bowl, because it is the final game of the year.
For decades, networks took timeouts whenever they wanted. But since the late 1990s, the N.F.L. has regulated their length, frequency and placement. The N.F.L. standardized breaks to include four 30-second commercials and 10 or so seconds for networks to run promotions for other shows or for the announcers to discuss elements of the game.
In 2016, to address complaints from viewers — including Commissioner Roger Goodell, who watches games closely — the league undertook a comprehensive look at how commercial breaks affected the experience of viewers and players and fans in the stadium.
It found that the need to cram in 20 or 22 breaks per game led to unnatural stoppages. For instance, networks routinely took commercial breaks after an extra point, returned to the stadium for the kickoff and then went back to commercial. If there was a punt with a few seconds left in the first quarter, the league determined there was no need to take a commercial at the change of possession because there is always a break at the end of the quarter.
So in 2017, the N.F.L. cut one of the five in-game breaks taken each quarter, but increased the length of breaks to 2 minutes 20 seconds.
'These changes are meant to give you more of what you want: a competitive game with fewer interruptions and distractions from the action,' Mr. Goodell wrote in a letter to fans explaining the moves.
Fewer breaks, it turned out, increased attention on commercials. Networks also introduced 'double boxes' that show an advertisement on one side and a shot of the stadium in the other box. The league tried to improve the flow of the game by, among other things, not going to break during late comebacks and game-winning drives and allowing referees to review calls on a tablet as opposed to large screens on the sideline.
When a full break feels too disruptive, networks may introduce an analyst to discuss a controversial call or a sideline reporter to provide updates on a player's injuries.
'You're sort of using natural downtime anyway, so people are never standing around with 'Why aren't we playing?'' said Hans Schroeder, the executive vice president of media distribution at the league. 'That's great for people in the stadium and it's great for people watching at home.'

Backup running back NFL Offensive Player of the Year Saquon Barkley logged 345 rushing attempts and 2005 yards rushing in the 2024 regular season. After helping the Philadelphia Eagles win the Super Bowl, head coach Nick Sirianni and OC Kevin Patullo could be looking to lighten Barkley's load slightly in 2025. Will Shipley produced when given opportunities as a rookie, and A.J. Dillon has always been a physical, reliable dual-threat running back. Shipley had seven carries for 48 yards in the opener (6.9 avg), while Dillon logged five carries for 27 yards and three catches for 27 yards. 3rd WR Spot A.J. Brown and DeVonta Smith are among the top ten at their positions, but both players missed multiple games in 2024. A reliable third option is a must for an offense that'll see teams shift towards taking away the duo on the outside. Jahan Dotson caught 19 of 33 targets for 216 yards in 17 regular-season games with the Eagles in 2024 after being acquired in a trade from Washington. Dotson's most likely competition will come from Johnny Wilson and undrafted rookie Darius Cooper. Wilson finished the preseason opener with three catches for 73 yards, while Cooper starred, catching six passes for 82 yards and one touchdown. Right guard position Tyler Steen lost training camp battles to Cam Jurgens in 2023 and Mekhi Becton in 2024, but has his best shot at earning the Eagles' right guard position in 2025. Kenyon Green was acquired in the trade for C.J. Gardner-Johnson, but he's been getting reps at left guard. Steen was impressive in the opener. Inside linebacker spot Zack Baun is an All-Pro; he'll be the engine that drives the Eagles' defense. He'll need a running mate while Nakobe Dean works to return from a patellar tendon injury that could cost him most of the 2025 season. That leaves first-round pick Jihaad Campbell, second-year linebacker Jeremiah Trotter Jr., and fifth-round pick Smael Mondon Jr. Campbell has been dominant in Eagles practice, while Trotter had six tackles and a QB hit in the opener. Mondon had four tackles. Left cornerback position The Eagles lost Darius Slay (Steelers), James Bradberry (free agent), Avonte Maddox (Lions), and Isaiah Rodgers (Vikings) in free agency and signed Adoree' Jackson. Even with those moves, Philadelphia didn't draft a cornerback until the fifth round when they selected Mac McWilliams out of UCF. Williams (5-10, 191) will add some depth on the outside and in the slot, but he was a fifth-round pick for a reason. Kelee Ringo and Jackson have battled throughout training camp, while Jakorian Bennett was acquired in a trade with the Raiders for Thomas Booker. Safety position The Eagles traded C.J. Gardner-Johnson to Houston for Kenyon Green, opening up a starting role for Sydney Brown or Tristin McCollum. Brown is a physical safety who is stout on special teams but doesn't operate efficiently in space or match up against elite pass catchers. Enter Andrew Mukuba, a Swiss army knife from Texas who could keep Brown relegated to special team duties. Mukuba can play the slot, operate in space, and play with range, drawing comparisons to Gardner-Johnson. Early on, it's been Brown with the edge, and if the season started today, the third-year safety would get the nod over Makuba, who has battled injuries and inconsistent play. Andre Sam has been solid and is another player to watch.

Most franchises are based on their talent under the age of 25, and the Ravens have several notable, high-profile performers who are still in their prime. OL Emery Jones: 21 The Ravens selected Jones at No. 91 overall after the offensive tackle spent three seasons at LSU. He was a two-time second-team All-SEC selection. LB Jay Higgins: 23 An All-American and All-Big 10 selection, Higgins has the look of an under-the-radar player who could end up next to Roquan Smith. Higgins (6-0, 224) started all 13 games in his final season with the Hawkeyes, totaling a team high 124 tackles (53 solo), including 2.5 tackles for loss, one sack, nine passes defensed, and four interceptions. OLB Adisa Isaac: 23 Kyle Van Noy and Odafe Oweh are the unquestioned starters, but the Ravens are hoping 2024 third-round pick Adisa Isaac can take the next step. Isaac saw action in four games and played 32 defensive snaps, as his NFL debut was delayed by a hamstring issue, which sidelined him for the Ravens' first two games. RB Keaton Mitchell: 23 Ravens RB Keaton Mitchell says he feels better than he did three years ago. As a rookie, Mitchell led all running backs with at least a dozen attempts in yards per carry (8.4 avg), and he has set personal records in all of his speed tracking analytics this offseason. OL Roger Rosengarten: 23 After alternating snaps in the first three weeks, Rosengarten took over as the Ravens' starting right tackle in Week 4 and never looked back, starting 16 games (including the playoffs). Among offensive tackles who played at least 50% of the snaps, Rosengarten ranked No. 39 at his position, according to Pro Football Focus (PFF). He was credited with four sacks allowed in 488 pass-blocking snaps. WR LaJohntay Wester: 23 Wester is another of the Colorado speedsters. In his lone season at Colorado after transferring from Florida Atlantic, the smooth and dynamic receiver recorded 74 receptions for 934 yards and 10 touchdowns. His punt return touchdown against Utah further showcased his versatility and playmaking ability. WR Zay Flowers: 24 A 2024 Pro Bowler, Flowers logged his 100th-career reception in his 21st-career game, becoming the fastest player in Ravens history (21 games) to reach the mark. DB Kyle Hamilton: 24 A second-team All-Pro last season, Hamilton started all 17 games for Baltimore in 2024, totaling a career-high 107 tackles (77 solo), two sacks, 4 TFL, 1 INT, 9 PD, 2 FFs, and 1 FR, en route to earning his second-straight Pro Bowl nod…Helped Baltimore's defense rank No. 1 against the run (80.1 ypg), No. 2 in sacks (54), and No. 5 (tied) in yards per play allowed (5.2). An off-season working out with Ronnie Stanley should allow Faalele to take the next steps as a run blocker. TE Isaiah Likely: 25 Likely saw action in 16 games (nine starts) for Baltimore in 2024, totaling career highs in receptions (42), receiving yards (477), and receiving TDs (6). Likely became the second-fastest Ravens TE (34 games) to reach double-digit receiving scores in a career, behind only Mark Andrews (28 games). A Seahawks Super Bowl disaster and the unraveling of a would-be dynasty: ‘They took a dream'

Marshawn Lynch imagined this moment countless times as a kid growing up in North Oakland: 'It's the end of the game … one more play … the quarterback hand the ball off to Marshawn … he jump in the end zone — touchdown! The Oakland Raiders win the Super Bowl!' Advertisement The final seconds of Super Bowl XLIX between the Seattle Seahawks and New England Patriots nearly played out that way. With Seattle on the New England 5-yard line, trailing 28-24 with 1:06 remaining, NBC's Cris Collinsworth said, 'Now you have to stop Marshawn Lynch.' Then Wilson put the ball in Lynch's hands. 'Here he goes,' play-by-play man Al Michaels said as the running back plowed forward. 'Beast Mode! To the half-yard line!' Offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell recalled that the Seahawks had failed on a pair of short-yardage runs earlier in the game: Vince Wilfork blew up a third-and-2 shotgun run for no gain in the first quarter, and linebacker Rob Ninkovich did the same on a third-and-1 carry in the third quarter. With those plays in mind, Bevell didn't think Lynch would just walk into the end zone if he called another run play on second down. Even though Lynch was also successful on a three-yard touchdown run on third-and-2 in the second quarter and produced a first down on a second-and-1 run in the third, Bevell believed he made the right decision based on the situation. Obviously, Lynch could have scored the game-winning touchdown, but when Bevell hears that he made the worst call of all time, 'I would not agree with that' is his retort. As for the specifics of the play he chose, Bevell felt good about giving Russell Wilson options: he could go to Doug Baldwin if the Patriots were in zone coverage, Ricardo Lockette if they were in man-to-man. 'The process was solid,' Bevell said. 'And I think the play call gave us a great opportunity to be very successful.' Choosing to throw on second down may have made sense to the coaching staff, but not to the dreamer from North Oakland. 'Not only did they take a ring, a moment — they took a dream,' Lynch said. 'That's a once-in-a-lifetime situation.' There wasn't any debate or discussion of audibling when Russell Wilson said the call. Sure, players I've spoken with had their objections, but they didn't feel it was their place to express it in that moment. Wilson was among the most powerful players in the huddle, and he fully believed in Bevell's call. So that left only Baldwin, Lynch, and possibly veteran center Max Unger as the guys with the cache to overrule the decision, although that would likely have required burning the team's final timeout. So onward they went. Advertisement Because receiver Chris Matthews had torched the Patriots earlier in the game, Brandon Browner replaced Logan Ryan as Matthews' primary defender. This substitution thrust backup cornerback Malcolm Butler into the game. On this final play, Browner lined up directly over Jermaine Kearse. Butler was several yards deep into the end zone, aligned over Lockette. Kearse figured there were two ways to play it: either Browner would take Lockette, or they'd 'lock' it, meaning the defenders follow who's in front of them. Butler and Browner chose the latter because they knew what was coming. Kearse thought it'd be an easy touchdown if he could disrupt Browner. But the bigger and stronger Browner overpowered Kearse, and Butler predicted a slant pattern by Lockette based on the receiver keeping his head forward then immediately turning to Wilson after jabbing outside with his right foot. Seattle's longtime play-by-play announcer Steve Raible described what followed: 'Lynch in the backfield … Russell looks, throws inside … OH MY GOD, IT'S PICKED OFF … AT THE GOAL LINE … IT'S PICKED OFF BY BUTLER … INTENDED FOR LOCKETTE AT THE GOAL LINE!' The atmosphere inside Seattle's locker room was one of tragedy. One year earlier, Lynch made sure Philthy Rich's 'Ready 2 Ride' blasted throughout the room in celebration of their triumph. This time, Lynch was fully dressed, headphones on, beelining for the exits by the time his teammates even arrived to a locker room soundtracked by silence. Heartbreak, despair, disgust, frustration, disbelief, and confusion filled the air. Tears flowed from the faces of coaches, executives, and players. Some players were inconsolable. Others were enraged, yelling and screaming at one another, and even some coaches. A backup defensive lineman punched a wall and injured his hand. Everyone I've ever spoken with described a dark, ominous room, like life had just been zapped from them, and they were all living the same nightmare. Advertisement 'It's like a death,' longtime vice president of player engagement Mo Kelly said. 'It's hard to ever get over that.' Getting over it was harder for some than others. The first step was hearing why they decided to throw the ball in that situation. Pete Carroll doubled down on his thought process: to get four bites at the apple with only one timeout, they had to throw ball at some point. It was sound logic schematically — but logic his locker room wasn't interesting in hearing, largely because they believed anything other than trusting Lynch to get across that line was flawed thinking. Throwing the ball was largely viewed as such a ludicrous notion that it birthed the conspiracy theory that Carroll and Bevell called that play to try and ensure Wilson won the MVP over Lynch, who at the time was feuding with the front office and making headlines for his rebellious stance against the press. Lynch publicly wondered if the coaches had plotted against him in that way. Carroll and Bevell are adamant that such a notion is ridiculous. Carroll isn't one to hold grudges, but he was upset his players were foolish enough to think he gave a damn about the MVP. When Carroll addressed the team at their meeting back in Seattle, he tripled down on the thought process and went as far as to say he'd throw the ball again if presented the same scenario. The room fell silent. Then the culture really started to fall apart. 'You already punched me in my stomach once,' one player told me of his reaction to Carroll's explanation, 'and he just took a knife this time and put it through my soul.' The Super Bowl loss and Carroll's reasoning behind the final play did irreparable damage to the Seahawks and their culture. For years, the players had essentially been programmed to believe they were a family. They internalized that idea and lived by it. This was especially true for the players whose only NFL experience was in Seattle. Losing the Super Bowl in that manner led them to poke holes in the message and the philosophy, like children growing up and bucking back at parents who they learned have been deceiving them. Their identity was to run the ball, but they felt they unnecessarily abandoned it when it mattered most. The Seahawks had been built around a collection of players who shared a familial bond. The bond was broken and shattered after the Super Bowl. The trust they once had was replaced by finger-pointing and skepticism. There wasn't a single dramatic blowup that made people feel this way, it was more a slow, drawn out feeling of division. But Carroll's explanation in the team meeting didn't help, neither did offensive line coach Tom Cable redirecting the blame, saying that if the defense hadn't blown a 10-point lead in the fourth quarter there'd be nothing to talk about. Cable's comment infuriated members of the defense. Any hope that the players wouldn't leave for the off-season with lingering bad feelings was gone. 'We didn't trust each other,' K.J. Wright said, describing the aftermath. 'We didn't connect with each other. It was a dark, gray cloud hovering over us. For it to get addressed the way it got addressed and for us to not talk about it — we needed therapy. If it was me, we'd have had therapy to let it out.' Wilson organized a trip to Hawaii for his teammates, with over 30 attendees. He wanted them to hang out and air their grievances in a safe space. It worked for some of the guys. They let it all out on the island and were able to leave the past where it belonged. It didn't work for everyone, though. And Wilson didn't make the situation any better by echoing Carroll's sentiment that he'd run the same play again if given the opportunity. Wilson had every right to share his truth but that's not a truth anyone wanted to hear, especially if their truth was that doing anything other than handing the ball to Lynch was idiotic and unforgivable. The Hawaii trip was a decent idea, but it was mostly a flop. Advertisement The Seahawks had become the spouse who stayed with their partner after being cheated on. The relationship remained intact, but the connection wasn't as strong. They forgave but didn't forget, and the feeling never faded. A text message here, a dinner conversation there. Venting to Kelly and longtime equipment director Erik Kennedy. A meeting before losing to the Packers in Week 2 of the 2015 season. Richard Sherman calling out the offensive coaches on the sideline on national television over a failed goal-line pass in 2016. An ESPN The Magazine article in 2017 explaining why Sherman won't let it go. A Sports Illustrated article in 2018 about other teammates basically feeling the same way. New coaches that joined the staff in 2018 could feel that players couldn't get over the fact they were only one-time champions. 'It lingered,' Baldwin said in 2022. 'We did our best to try and come out of it but … you got guys who are legitimately killing themselves. Every time you step out on that field and you get hit, you're taking days off your life. You have guys who are legitimately killing themselves to get to that moment. We were on the 1-yard line.
