'Aukaat mein raho': Javed Akhtar slams troll telling him to celebrate Pakistan's Independence Day, calling him ‘gaddar'

Veteran writer and lyricist Javed Akhtar, like the rest of the country, marked Independence Day on August 15 with a heartfelt note. However, when a troll insinuated that he was a Pakistani national who should be celebrating Pakistan's Independence Day instead, and even branded him a traitor, the lyricist didn't hold back, giving a sharp rebuke. Javed Akhtar slams trolls calling him a traitor. Javed Akhtar hits back at troll questioning his nationality On Friday, Javed took to X (formerly Twitter) and wrote, 'Happy Independence Day to all my Indian sisters and brothers. Let's not forget this independence was not given to us on a platter. Today we must remember and salute those who went to jails and those who went to gallows for getting us Azaadi. Let's see that we never lose this precious gift." Reacting to the post, a troll commented, 'Aapka happy independence to 14th August hai (your Independence Day is on August 14)." Javed replied, 'Beta, jab tumhare baap dada angrez ke joote chaat rahe thay, mere buzurg desh ki aazadi ke liye Kaala Pani mein mar rahe thay. Apni aukaat mein raho (Son, while your forefathers were licking the boots of the British, my ancestors were dying in Kala Pani for the country's freedom. Know your place).' Kaala Pani refers to the Cellular Jail in Andaman, where a lot of political prisoners were sent by the British during the colonial rule in India. Javed Akhtar's family ties to the freedom struggle Javed Akhtar's great-grandfather Fazl-e-Haq Khairabadi was an Indian independence activist, and participated in the Mutiny of 1857. His uncle, Ansar Harvani, was also a politician and independence activist, who opposed the Partition of India. Javed Akhtar reacts to a troll calling him a traitor Further, when a troll called him gaddar (traitor), Javed responded, 'Gaddaar voh hain jo Non-Cooperation aur Quit India Movement ke khilaf thay. Gaddaar voh hain jinhon ne jitna ho saka angrez ki madad ki. Gaddaar voh hain jo humare samvidhan aur tirange ke khilaf thay. Yeh pata laga kar voh kaun thay, apni jihaalat thodi si kam kar lo (Traitors are those who were against the Non-Cooperation and Quit India movements. Traitors are those who helped the British as much as they could. Traitors are those who were against our Constitution and our tricolour. Find out who they were and reduce your ignorance a little).' Many X users came out in support of Javed. One comment read, 'Gave a great reply to the hatemonger, sir 😃😊 They will never understand our sacrifices.' Another wrote, 'Javed saab rocked. What a savage reply.' Another comment read, 'Javed ji, you don't need to reply to such comments, just ignore.' Meanwhile, Javed Akhtar will be penning the lyrics for Rajkumar Santoshi's upcoming film Lahore 1947. AR Rahman will compose the music of the film. The film also stars Sunny Deol, Preity Zinta, Shabana Azmi, Ali Fazal, and Abhimanyu Singh in key roles. Shubhanshu Shukla to return to India on August 19, to meet PM Modi

Astronaut Shubhanshu Shukla is set to return to India on Sunday (August 16, 2025) after his historic visit to the International Space Station (ISS) and is eager to share his experiences with friends and colleagues back home as ISRO eyes its maiden human spaceflight in 2027. Mr. Shukla, who has been in the U.S., training for the Axiom-4 mission to ISS for the past year, is expected to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi and travel to his hometown Lucknow soon after. He is expected to be back in the capital to participate in the National Space Day celebrations on August 22-23. Mr. Shukla posted on Instagram a smiling photograph of himself sitting in an aeroplane, and said in its caption that he was filled with mixed emotions as he left the U.S. and could not wait to return to India to share his experiences with everyone back home. "As I sit on the plane to come back to India, I have a mix of emotions running through my heart. I feel sad leaving a fantastic group of people behind who were my friends and family for the past one year during this mission. I am also excited about meeting all my friends, family and everyone in the country for the first time post mission. I guess this is what life is -- everything all at once," Mr. Shukla said in the post. "Having received incredible love and support from everyone during and after the mission, I can't wait to come back to India to share my experiences with all of you. Goodbyes are hard but we need to keep moving in life. As my commander Peggy Whitson fondly says, 'the only constant in spaceflight is change'. I believe that applies to life as well," he said. Mr. Shukla also added, "I guess at the end of the day -'Yun hi chala chal rahi - jeevan gaadi hai samay pahiya'," recalling the song from the Bollywood movie Swades that was on his playlist just before he embarked on the Axiom-4 mission to the ISS on June 25 from the U.S. Mr. Shukla and his backup astronaut, Prashanth Nair, participated in the Independence Day celebrations at the Indian Consulate in Houston on Friday (August 15, 2025). Addressing the 79th Independence Day celebrations at the Red Fort, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday (August 15, 2025) said India was developing its own space station and recalled that Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla has returned from a space mission. "Our Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla has returned from the space station. In the coming days, he is returning to India," Mr. Modi had said. Mr. Shukla was part of the Axiom-4 private space mission that lifted off from Florida on June 25 and docked at the International Space Station on June 26. He returned to Earth on July 15. Along with three other astronauts — Peggy Whitson (U.S.), Slawosz Uznanski-Wisniewski (Poland), and Tibor Kapu (Hungary) — Shukla conducted over 60 experiments and 20 outreach sessions during the 18-day mission.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by ColorsTV (@colorstv) From 'Tanvi The Great' to 'The Bengal Files' On the professional front, Anupam Kher was last seen in 'Tanvi The Great' which is a touching story about a 21-year-old woman on the autism spectrum who dreams of joining the Indian Army to fulfill her late father's wish. ETimes gave the film a rating of 4 stars and an excerpt from our review reads, "Ultimately, 'Tanvi: The Great' is less about autism or the army and more about human connection—how understanding can grow in silence, how dreams can be nurtured by love, and how change often begins with one person choosing to listen. It's a rare drama that sidesteps melodrama and chooses subtlety." His upcoming film is Vivek Agnihotri's 'The Bengal Files', where he will portray Mahatma Gandhi . Sharing his first look on Instagram, Kher wrote: 'Some roles change your thoughts, your habits, your inner self. Playing #GandhiJi is one such role. Sharing it with you all for the first time my character from @vivekagnihotri's #TheBengalFiles! No prosthetics was used here! Jai Hind (sic)!' Part of Vivek Agnihotri's 'Files' trilogy 'The Bengal Files' marks the third installment in Agnihotri's trilogy which is following 'The Tashkent Files' (2019) and the blockbuster 'The Kashmir Files' (2022). The upcoming film 'The Bengali Files' features an ensemble cast including Mithun Chakraborty, Pallavi Joshi, Darshan Kumar, Puneet Issar, and Saswata Chatterjee. The movie is slated for release on September 5.
