$216k theft: California man charged for stealing rare Chinese texts from UCLA library; used aliases, returned fakes
A California library user has been charged for stealing rare Chinese manuscripts valued at $216,000, US officials announced on Thursday, reports AFP.
The suspect, identified as Jeffrey Ying, 38, reportedly used multiple aliases to access centuries-old works, some of them dating back over 600 years, at the University of California, Los Angeles library, then allegedly returned forged copies in their place.
He is a resident of Fremont, the Bay Area.
"The library noticed that several rare Chinese manuscripts were missing, and an initial investigation revealed the books were last viewed by a visitor who identified himself as 'Alan Fujimori,'" the Department of Justice said, reported AFP.
"Law enforcement also found pre-made labels known as asset tags associated with the same manuscripts that could be used to create 'dummy' books to return to the library in place of the original books."
When detectives searched the Los Angeles-area hotel where Ying was staying, they discovered blank manuscripts resembling the rare books he borrowed, as per the charging documents. Officials noted that Ying would often travel to China after checking out the materials from the library.
Ying was found in possession of multiple library cards issued under various names.
If found guilty of major artwork theft, Ying, who is currently in state custody, could face up to 10 years in federal prison.

'Sulai', a clear, colourless spirit traditionally brewed from fermented molasses or rice, has long been a part of the region's culture, particularly among tea garden communities. However, its unregulated production and frequent adulteration have turned it into a major public health hazard. Five killed as tree falls on bus in Barabanki
1 2 Lucknow: Five people, including two assistant development officers and a schoolteacher, were killed when a massive tree fell on a UP roadways bus near Rajabazar area of Barabanki on Friday, police said. The incident occurred at 10.40 am while the bus was en route from the district headquarters to Haidargarh with 60 passengers to officials, it took nearly one-and-a-half hours of intensive efforts to remove the heavy branches and retrieve the victims and rescue one injured woman. In a poignant scene, the injured woman, Rama Devi , trapped between seats could be heard pleading with bystanders. "This is a matter of life and death… instead of making videos, help us remove the branches so we can get out," she implored. Locals later scolded the person and joined the rescue effort, helping pull her out to safety. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath announced Rs 5 lakh compensation for each victim's family while the transport department provided an immediate relief of Rs 50,000 per family, with an additional Rs 7 lakh to be given from the Passenger Security Fund. Three Hyderabad residents lose over Rs 1.6 cr in stock investment frauds
1 2 Hyderabad: Cybercrime police have registered three separate cases of large-scale investment fraud, all following an identical playbook of WhatsApp stock-trading groups, fake IPO promises, and last-minute demands for fresh fees. Collectively, the fraudsters siphoned off nearly Rs 1.68 crore from three city residents, two of them govt employees and one a chartered accountant. According to the first complaint, a 39-year-old defence electronics research laboratory (DLRL) employee from Kanchanbagh was lured into a WhatsApp group titled ASBPL Start-Up Excellence Circle in mid-June. Convinced by the administrators, Abhishek and Abhijeet, that he was buying pre-listing block deals, the victim transferred over Rs 54.6 lakh in 28 instalments to accounts spread across seven banks. When he sought to withdraw the profits shown in an app dashboard, the fraudsters demanded an additional Rs 10 lakh to activate the high-value withdrawal channel, triggering suspicion. On his complaint, a case was registered at the Hyderabad cybercrime police station on Thursday. According to the complainant, the fraudsters extended a no-interest loan to cover oversubscribed IPO shares and later threatened to freeze his funds unless he paid a 10% management fee. All three cases have been booked under Sections 66-C and 66-D of the Information Technology Act and relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita dealing with cheating, impersonation, and criminal conspiracy. Preliminary investigation shows the money was dispersed through dozens of mule accounts in different banks. Police are now trying to identify the accused by analysing the bank account details.
