$216k theft: California man charged for stealing rare Chinese texts from UCLA library; used aliases, returned fakes
A California library user has been charged for stealing rare Chinese manuscripts valued at $216,000, US officials announced on Thursday, reports AFP.
The suspect, identified as Jeffrey Ying, 38, reportedly used multiple aliases to access centuries-old works, some of them dating back over 600 years, at the University of California, Los Angeles library, then allegedly returned forged copies in their place.
He is a resident of Fremont, the Bay Area.
"The library noticed that several rare Chinese manuscripts were missing, and an initial investigation revealed the books were last viewed by a visitor who identified himself as 'Alan Fujimori,'" the Department of Justice said, reported AFP.
"Law enforcement also found pre-made labels known as asset tags associated with the same manuscripts that could be used to create 'dummy' books to return to the library in place of the original books."
When detectives searched the Los Angeles-area hotel where Ying was staying, they discovered blank manuscripts resembling the rare books he borrowed, as per the charging documents. Officials noted that Ying would often travel to China after checking out the materials from the library.
Ying was found in possession of multiple library cards issued under various names.
If found guilty of major artwork theft, Ying, who is currently in state custody, could face up to 10 years in federal prison.

Golaghat excise department destroys 5k litres of illicit liquor, razes 24 dens
1 2 3 4 5 6 Dibrugarh: In a massive operation aimed at curbing illegal liquor trade, the excise department conducted sweeping raids across Golaghat district on Friday, dismantling more than two dozen illicit liquor dens and seizing large quantities of 'Sulai', a locally brewed rectified spirit widely consumed in rural areas and tea gardens. The operation led to the destruction of over 5,000 litres of illicit country liquor and the confiscation of manufacturing equipment. Raids were carried out at multiple locations, including Goroi Chuk, Gowal Gaon, Ratanpur, Na-Bhanga, Melia, Jitpur, Puspaban, and Boragaon, targeting the entire supply chain of the illegal trade. The operation specifically focused on raw materials, with authorities seizing hundreds of kilograms of 'Lali Gur' (molasses), a key ingredient in the fermentation process. The victims had consumed contaminated Sulai laced with methanol and other toxic substances, including dry cell batteries, which were added to increase potency. Methanol, even in small quantities, can cause blindness, organ failure, and death. 'Sulai', a clear, colourless spirit traditionally brewed from fermented molasses or rice, has long been a part of the region's culture, particularly among tea garden communities. However, its unregulated production and frequent adulteration have turned it into a major public health hazard. Illegal brewers and bootleggers often target economically vulnerable workers, offering cheap liquor with devastating consequences. The low cost of illicit 'Sulai' compared to licensed liquor makes it attractive to daily wage earners, despite the potentially fatal health risks. "The 2019 tragedy was a wake-up call. Since then, we have intensified enforcement, but the trade persists because of demand and the high profits involved. Today's operation is a step toward breaking that cycle," said a senior excise official involved in Friday's raids. Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI). Three Hyderabad residents lose over Rs 1.6 cr in stock investment frauds
1 2 Hyderabad: Cybercrime police have registered three separate cases of large-scale investment fraud, all following an identical playbook of WhatsApp stock-trading groups, fake IPO promises, and last-minute demands for fresh fees. Collectively, the fraudsters siphoned off nearly Rs 1.68 crore from three city residents, two of them govt employees and one a chartered accountant. According to the first complaint, a 39-year-old defence electronics research laboratory (DLRL) employee from Kanchanbagh was lured into a WhatsApp group titled ASBPL Start-Up Excellence Circle in mid-June. Convinced by the administrators, Abhishek and Abhijeet, that he was buying pre-listing block deals, the victim transferred over Rs 54.6 lakh in 28 instalments to accounts spread across seven banks. When he sought to withdraw the profits shown in an app dashboard, the fraudsters demanded an additional Rs 10 lakh to activate the high-value withdrawal channel, triggering suspicion. On his complaint, a case was registered at the Hyderabad cybercrime police station on Thursday. On the same day, a 63-year-old chartered accountant from Old Malakpet reported losing Rs 43 lakh after joining a WhatsApp group operated by fraudsters posing as representatives of a private bank's equity trading entity. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Treatment That Might Help You Against Knee Pain Knee pain | search ads Find Now Undo The victim watched his investment on a virtual platform balloon to Rs 3.74 crore before realising that the platform had no link to the private bank.
