Golar LNG Strengthens Africa Commitment as Chief Commercial Officer (CCO) Federico Petersen Joins African Energy Week (AEW) 2025 Speaker Lineup
Federico Petersen, Chief Commercial Officer of marine LNG infrastructure operator Golar LNG, has confirmed his participation as a speaker at African Energy Week (AEW): Invest in African Energies 2025, taking place from September 29 to October 3 in Cape Town. His participation follows a series of landmark achievements across the continent, positioning Golar LNG at the forefront of Africa's natural gas revolution. In July 2025, the company announced that its Gimi floating LNG (FLNG) unit has reached commercial operations date under a 20-year lease-and-operate agreement for the Greater Tortue Ahmeyim (GTA) project offshore Senegal and Mauritania. Backed by an estimated 15 trillion cubic feet (tcf) of natural gas, the Gimi facility will produce 2.4 million tons per annum (mtpa) of LNG, ramping up to its nameplate capacity of 2.7 mtpa. AEW: Invest in African Energies is the platform of choice for project operators, financiers, technology providers and government, and has emerged as the official place to sign deals in African energy. Visit for more information about this exciting event. In Nigeria, Golar LNG signed a project development agreement in June 2024 with global energy company the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation for the deployment of a new FLNG facility offshore the Niger Delta. With a planned processing capacity of 400-500 million standard cubic feet per day, the facility will produce LNG, LPG and condensate, with first gas targeted for 2027. The project falls under Nigeria's broader 'Decade of Gas' initiative, which aims to monetize the country's 209 tcf of gas reserves and accelerate energy access and industrial growth. Supported by reforms such as the Petroleum Industry Act and the Nigerian Gas Flaring Commercialization Program, the project is a critical step toward establishing Nigeria as a global gas hub. In Cameroon, Golar LNG operates the Hilli Episeyo FLNG facility offshore Kribi, which made history as the world's first LNG conversion and the project that introduced Cameroon as the world's 20 th LNG-exporting nation in 2018. In October 2023, the vessel offloaded its 100 th LNG cargo to the Energy Integrity, underscoring nearly six years of reliable operations. With a nameplate capacity of 2.4 mtpa and a strong track record of commercial uptime, Hilli Episeyo continues to serve as a benchmark for small- and mid-scale FLNG deployment. Golar LNG holds a 50% interest in Trains 1 and 2, with the facility enabling the monetization of associated gas while contributing to regional energy diversification and security. 'Golar LNG's proven ability to deliver bankable, scalable FLNG infrastructure in frontier markets has redefined what's possible for gas monetization in Africa. With operations in Senegal, Mauritania, Nigeria and Cameroon, the company is a true partner to Africa's energy future,' states Tomás Gerbasio, VP of Commercial and Strategic Engagement, African Energy Chamber. Federico's participation at AEW: Invest in African Energies highlights Golar LNG's commitment to advancing FLNG development and natural gas monetization across Africa. In line with the company's growing presence in Africa's energy landscape, Golar LNG will participate as a Gold Partner at this year's edition of the conference and exhibition, which serves as a strategic platform to showcase innovative FLNG solutions and a long-term commitment to the continent's energy development. Sempra, Japan's JERA enter into 20-year LNG supply deal
Sempra Infrastructure, a unit of U.S. energy company Sempra, will supply 1.5 million tonnes of liquefied natural gas (LNG) per year to Japan's biggest power generator JERA in a 20-year deal, it said on Thursday. The LNG would be supplied from Sempra's Port Arthur LNG Phase 2 development project in Texas, it added. The United States is the world's largest exporter of LNG, shipping 11.9 billion cubic feet per day of the supercooled fuel in 2024, and has gained further momentum following President Donald Trump's lifting of a moratorium on new export permits in January. Sempra Infrastructure CEO Justin Bird said the company remains focused on advancing its Port Arthur LNG Phase 2 development project to a final investment decision. The project has received all its key permits and is expected to include two liquefaction trains capable of producing about 13 Mtpa of LNG, the companies said in a statement. In May, Sempra's Port Arthur Phase 2 project in Texas had won U.S. approval to export liquefied natural gas to markets in Europe and Asia. Trump has pushed allies like Japan, which is the world's second-largest LNG buyer, and South Korea to buy U.S. oil and gas while threatening tariffs on their exports. The Port Arthur LNG Phase 1 project, which is currently under construction, is expected to achieve commercial operation in 2027 and 2028 for trains 1 and 2, respectively. U.S. liquefied natural gas producer NextDecade had also signed a 20-year deal in late May to supply JERA with 2 million tonnes per annum of LNG from its Rio Grande project's fifth liquefaction facility. ExxonMobil Partners with African Energy Week (AEW) 2025 as Diamond Sponsor – Showcasing Major Investments, Youth Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) Africa Initiatives, and Highlighting Women in Energy
As a Diamond Sponsor at AEW, ExxonMobil reaffirms its long-standing commitment to Africa's energy future through ambitious new investments, frontier exploration and impactful educational programs. The company will take a central role in shaping dialogue on the continent's upstream outlook, LNG development and the transition to more inclusive energy systems. As the world's largest publicly listed, private integrated energy company, ExxonMobil continues to be a leader in the frontier exploration space and deepen its footprint in Africa through a series of forward-looking, high-impact initiatives. In Nigeria, the company looks to make significant investment in the deepwater as part of a broader strategy to help increase national output. This comes on the heels of sustained production efforts at the Erha and Owowo fields, underlining the company's strategic focus on optimizing existing deepwater assets. Further south, ExxonMobil is maintaining production from the prolific Kizomba deepwater development in Angola's Block 15, where it recently signed a Production Sharing Contract (PSC) extension with the Angolan National Agency of Petroleum, Gas and Biofuels (ANPG), extending operations until 2037. The company also renewed its PSC for Block 17, in partnership with TotalEnergies to ensure continued production from key offshore Block 17 fields. In East Africa, ExxonMobil is making headway with the long-anticipated Rovuma LNG project in Mozambique's Area 4. The project – expected to reach a final investment decision in 2026 – aims to bring an additional 18 million tons per annum (MTPA) of LNG to market, building on Mozambique's emergence as a key global gas supplier. Beyond upstream operations, ExxonMobil is also investing in long-term capacity-building through the ExxonMobil Foundation's STEM Africa program. Launched in 2024, the program partners with Junior Achievement Africa to deliver immersive science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) education to students in Nigeria, Namibia, Angola and Mozambique. In its first year alone, the program reached over 3,000 students – 96% of whom expressed interest in pursuing STEM careers. In recognition of its impact, STEM Africa was awarded the Local Impact Award at the Big Five Board Awards in London earlier this month. 'ExxonMobil's role as a Diamond Sponsor at AEW 2025 is a testament to their bold, future-focused investments – from revitalizing offshore oilfields in Nigeria and Angola to advancing LNG capacity in Mozambique and exploring new frontiers in Africa's Atlantic Coast,' states NJ Ayuk, Executive Chairman of the African Energy Chamber. 'Their STEM Africa initiative demonstrates an equally strong commitment to building local talent and empowering young Africans to lead tomorrow's energy industry. This is the kind of strategic partnership Africa needs.' AEW 2025: Invest in African Energies will provide a premier platform for ExxonMobil to engage with African governments, investors, and stakeholders as the continent accelerates toward energy security and industrial growth.
