The Morning After: Everything Apple announced at WWDC 2025

Engadgeta day ago

Apple's Worldwide Developer Conference (WWDC 2025) kicked off yesterday, with the usual glossy keynote from the iPhone maker. As ever, the company outlined the changes it's made to its operating systems, all now named by year rather than version number. The biggest news is a visual overhaul of all the OSes, dubbed Liquid Glass , to bring them more in line with each other, and sharing features across the platforms. For instance, it's redesigned the iPhone's phone app, but it'll also be available on macOS Tahoe as well. Plus, some updates to Apple Intelligence , which include the useful (live translation of text and speech) and the less useful (using Image Playground to make backgrounds for your group chats).
The focus here, on smaller tweaks and features with more practical utility, is welcome after last year's show. After all, the company made some bold claims about what it was bringing to Siri, which it simply couldn't deliver in the time allowed. Apple does its best work when it's giving its users features that make their lives easier, not when it's trying to shout down its Silicon Valley rivals in AI.

There's nothing Warner Bros. likes more than a high-profile merger, followed swiftly by an equally high-profile de-merger. Not long after its ill-advised coupling with Discovery, WBD is cleaving itself in twain, and it's not hiding where it sees the future of its business . One company, Streaming and Studios, will hold on to Warner Bros, New Line, DC Studios, HBO and HBO Max. The other, Global Networks, includes the entity's cable channels and brands, like CNN, HGTV Cartoon Network and Discovery. Perhaps a better name for that second outfit would be The Stuff We'd Otherwise Lose Money On When People Ditch Cable Plus A Lot Of The Merger Debt, So Let's Cast It Into The Sea To Sink Now… Inc.

Nintendo is saying 'Well, excuuuuuse me' to the 2027 cinema release schedule, punting The Legend of Zelda back to May 7 . Shigeru Miyamoto said the delay was to ensure the film was as 'good as it can be,' even if the phrase live-action Zelda movie chills the blood by default. Mercifully, director Wes Ball has said he's aiming to make a movie in the spirit of a live action Miyazaki, which is the best anyone can hope for.

Prime Video reportedly shows almost twice as many ads as it used to

If it feels like you spend a lot more time watching ads in Prime Video than you used to, that may not be a mistake. Amazon has increased the number of ads or "ad load" in Prime Video to four-to-six minutes of ads per hour, Adweek reports. Amazon's plan to increase the amount of advertising in its streaming service was previously reported in October 2024. Shifting to a max of six minutes of ads per hour is nearly double the up to three-and-a-half minutes of ads that could play when Amazon first converted its basic Prime Video subscription to an ad-supported tier. The company used to offer all of Prime Video's features and an ad-free experience for the cost of Amazon Prime ($159 per year / $15 per month) or $9 per month, but announced at the end of 2023 that avoiding ads would cost an extra $3 every month. Besides inserting ads, Amazon's basic plan also doesn't support for features like Dolby Atmos and Dolby Vision. Engadget has reached out to Amazon to confirm the ad load changes and will update this article if we hear back. Regardless of your tolerance for ads, cheaper ad-supported subscriptions have quickly become expected from most streaming services. Netflix, Max, Peacock and Paramount+ all offer subscriptions with ads. Even Apple, who could theoretically afford to lose money on subscriptions, reportedly started building a team to sell ads for a possible ad-supported tier of Apple TV+ in 2023. While adding more interruptions to the Prime Video experience isn't what anyone wants, Adweek does note that streaming services still insert far fewer ad breaks than broadcast TV. The ad load on traditional television "typically ranges from 13 to 16 minutes per hour."

Apple is salvaging Image Playground with a boost from ChatGPT

When Apple first unveiled Image Playground last year, the company touted it as a quick and easy way to generate personalized, original images with the help of Apple Intelligence. Upon launch, the app was met with skepticism, as some users were disappointed by its limitations and low-quality results. For example, one Reddit user was surprised to find that Image Playground kept generating an image of a hand with six fingers when prompted to create an 'up close image of a hand.' In another instance, a user was unable to receive images of simple descriptions, such as 'old man' or 'flower.' Some people even questioned what the point of the app was, noting that it seemed juvenile when compared to popular AI image generators. (Of course, not everybody dislikes the app; some have described it as being a fun experience). Fast-forward to this year's WWDC, where the tech giant announced that it's going to boost Image Playground with a ChatGPT integration, which should allow for a better, more advanced AI image generation service. With the new ChatGPT integration, users will be able to access more styles that move beyond the emoji-like creations that Image Playground has become known for. Images can be created in the following new styles: Oil Painting, Watercolor, Vector, Anime, and Print. In addition, people will be able to select a new 'Any Style' option that allows them to describe exactly what they want. These new styles will be visible under a banner that reads 'ChatGPT style.' Boston, MA | REGISTER NOW Apple says that Image Playground will send a user's description to ChatGPT to generate an image. The tech giant notes that it won't share anything with ChatGPT without users' permission. By integrating ChatGPT into Image Playground, Apple is giving the app another shot at attracting users while positioning its AI image creation tool as a more well-rounded competitor to other similar free apps. Plus, it makes sense for Apple to leverage ChatGPT to boost Image Playground, especially since the company has already tapped OpenAI's tools in other ways. Last year, Apple announced that it was bringing ChatGPT to Siri and other first-party apps and capabilities across its operating systems. With Siri, the assistant leverages ChatGPT when it's unable to answer a question or its own or when a user specifically asks Siri to send an inquiry to ChatGPT. Apple has also integrated ChatGPT into system-wide tools like Writing Tools, allowing users to generate, rewrite, and summarize text in apps like Notes and Mail. The updated Image Playground app is expected to launch alongside the release of iOS 26 this fall.

Apple (AAPL) Gets Buy Rating Despite AI Letdown at WWDC25, Says Goldman Sachs

Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) is one of the 10 AI Stocks on Wall Street's Radar. One of the most notable analyst calls on Tuesday, June 10th, was for Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL). Goldman Sachs reiterated the stock as 'Buy' with a $253 price target. The tech giant hosted its annual developers' conference on Monday, failing to introduce substantial artificial intelligence updates. Nevertheless, the firm said it's sticking with the stock following its Worldwide Developers Conference reveal. 'AAPL traded down ~1% following the WWDC25 keynote (note: AAPL declined 2% last year after WWDC24), where the company announced design improvements and new features across its operating systems and first-party apps, but failed to demonstrate substantial progress in Apple Intelligence.' The company has also confirmed that any enhancements to make Siri more personal are postponed till next year. This is very unlike last year's conference, where Siri was a highlight and mentioned numerous times. Despite these disappointments, analysts at Goldman Sachs believe that Apple is still a leader in consumer devices, with new features aimed at improving the user experience. These features include a new user interface named 'Liquid Glass,' AI-driven capabilities, enhanced Visual Intelligence, and several quality-of-life features. Looking ahead, the firm anticipates an upcoming improvement in the iPhone replacement cycle, which aligns with the introduction of new iPhone models in the years 2025, 2026, and 2027. 'We are Buy-rated on AAPL as we believe that the market's focus on slower product revenue growth masks the strength of the Apple ecosystem and associated revenue durability & visibility.' Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) is a technology company known for its consumer electronics, particularly the iPhones and MacBooks. While we acknowledge the potential of AAPL as an investment, we believe certain AI stocks offer greater upside potential and carry less downside risk.
