‘We've no doubt about him, he seems a really a good guy' – Stephen Bradley has no attitude concerns about Connor Malley

Sligo Rovers boss John Russell described Malley as the 'most complete midfielder in the country' last October but their relationship soured after the Bit'O'Red knocked back winter approaches from Shamrock Rovers and Shelbourne for a player that had a year remaining on his contract.
He has made little or no impression this year amid murmurs of behind the scenes unrest that entered the public domain when Russell suggested that the player had been left out of the squad for a game with the Hoops because of how he had trained and conducted himself.
Malley's last league appearance was a brief cameo against Bohemians on May 10 and with the writing on the wall for him at The Showgrounds, Bradley moved to arrange a loan deal until the end of the season that will allow the ex-Middlesbrough trainee to effectively audition at a club that was prepared to pay a significant five-figure sum for his services at the end of last term.
Bradley says a positive first conversation with the 25-year-old and references from other people who have encountered him during his career convinced him that it was worth pursuing a deal.
'Look, I don't know exactly what went on behind the scenes. I've obviously met Connor before we signed him and had a bit of coffee and had a good hour and a half, two hours talking about everything,' said Bradley.
'You get a nice feel. We've walked away from players in the past after meeting them and but Connor was one, when we left, we (Bradley and sporting director Stephen McPhail) both said, 'yeah, he's the one that we want here'.
'He's shown his ability time and time again and we've seen it playing against him. So that was never in question. I don't know what's going on in the background, but I know teams made bids for Connor at the end of last season and they were rejected. And you're hearing different stories from the agent, from the player, from the clubs and you don't know what's going on.
'That's between them, like, you know, in terms of who said what and regarding the bids. And that can be unsettling for players in a group.
'So, yeah, I can understand (unhappiness) from John's point of view but I can also – from speaking to Connor – understand his point of view. We were pretty clear after we left him that he was someone we wanted here and around the group and spoke to quite a number of people that have worked with him in the past and they all say the same thing. So, they all can't be wrong in terms of what type he is.
'So, yeah, we're under, we've no doubt, first of all, that his ability is a really high level, but second of all, he seems a really good fella, a really good guy. He just wants to work, wants to play and, yeah, I'm looking forward to getting him around the group.'
Malley was involved in a weekend friendly but was allowed to go home and spend some time with family before taking part in an U-20 match this evening.
He is not eligible for involvement in the second leg of the Conference League formality with St Joseph's from Gibraltar tomorrow but will come into contention for the next round. Rovers have a four goal lead going into the second leg in Tallaght.

Drogheda Utd fuelled by Euro nightmare to push hard for qualification next term

Josh Thomas is showing Drogheda what they have been missing with his winning goal in his second successive league game to beat Bohs on Friday night. The problem for Kevin Doherty and the Boynesiders is that the Swansea City loanee's strikes in the 1-0 victories against Sligo Rovers and the Gypsies came 16 weeks apart. Thomas suffered a severe grade three quad tear in that home game against Sligo in February, just weeks into his stay, and the Bohs game was just his third league appearance. "When I initially done it, I didn't think it was going to be as long as it was," said the striker, who also hit the back of the net on his comeback in the FAI Cup win over Crumlin a fortnight ago. "And then I tried to come back against Cork away and it just completely went again." READ MORE: Keith Andrew picks his Brentford captain - and it's good news for Ireland fans READ MORE: Tottenham captain Son Heung-min announces final game for the club The former Wales under-21 international went to side-foot a pass in the warm-up against the Leesiders when disaster struck. "It just felt like I erupted," he recalled. "So, we took extra precaution, went home and did my rehab back at Swansea and we took extra care and, yeah, I'm back now." Doherty will be hoping that Thomas can maintain his impact for the remainder of the season-long loan after his late intervention on Friday night after coming off the bench. "I'm buzzing, obviously," he said. "It's a tough place to come, so it was good to get the three points. The boys did most of the work, I just topped it off. Drogheda's Josh Thomas with Aidan Kenna of St. Patrick's Athletic (Image: ©INPHO/Ben Brady) "I back myself against any defender, to be honest, especially when I'm in that position. It's what I've been doing since I was 10 years old. That's what a striker dreams of, just to get one chance in a game - I'm always like that and obviously, it couldn't have come in a better situation in a top of the table clash." The hard-earned victory in Phibsboro moved fourth-placed Drogheda to within a point of Bohs in the bunch chasing pace-setters Shamrock Rovers. It was also a morale-booster for the side after European football was snatched from them due to multiclub rules. Instead of enjoying Conference League action after their FAI Cup success, they went to Cambrils in Spain for an eight-day training camp. "Obviously we trained really hard all week," Thomas said. "I think it was harder than we all expected it to be. It wasn't a holiday like everyone was saying it was but it was tough. We had a good night towards the end of the week and came back with all the morale really high, so yeah, it was good." The disappointment of missing that European experience may fuel Drogheda's push to qualify again, this time through the league. "I think when something gets taken away from you that's not your fault, it gives you more momentum to show people why we were here in the first place," said the striker. "I know towards the end of last season they really turned around their form and then obviously we've taken it into this season as well. And I think on paper we can go head-to-head with anyone in the league when we're on it." Get the latest sports headlines straight to your inbox by signing up for free email .

But it was a decision that was strongly disputed by the home side. Sligo were in good form heading into last night's clash — and with Galway losing to Cork on Friday, they a win against Shels would see them move level with John Caulfield's Tribesmen. And facing them was a Shels side who endured a gruelling trip home from Azerbaijan following their Champions League tie against Qarabag. Will Fitzgerald's cross from the right was knocked on for Kavanagh. And the striker was well placed to fire in from close range. Coote and Boyd goals give Shelbourne victory away to Sligo Rovers

Sligo Rovers 0-2 Shelbourne SHELS bagged the three points at the Showgrounds to boost spirits ahead of their latest midweek Euro trip. Sligo Rovers will rue their profligacy in front of goal as the visitors were clinical with two second half opportunities to move to within a point of fourth-place Drogheda in the Premier Division table. READ MORE:Ireland warm up for Rugby World Cup with comeback win in Cork READ MORE: Madie Gibson stars as impressive Athlone Town progress in Champions League There was controversy seven minutes from time when Rovers lost goalkeeper Sam Sargeant to a straight red card from ref Rob Harvey for handling outside his penalty area, although replays showed the netminder did so on the line. In-form Rovers were also unhappy that they weren't awarded a second half penalty when Shels debutant Milan Mbeng appeared to foul Will Fitzgerald. After playing Qarabag in Baku in their Champions Cup qualifier second leg last Wednesday, and ahead of next Wednesday's first leg trip to Reijka in Croatia in the Europa League, Joey O'Brien will be pleased to leave the north west with a victory in Shels' first League game since July 4. Ali Coote produced a moment of magic to break the deadlock in the 47th minute when he raced away from Fitzgerald, side-stepped Paddy McClean and fired into the corner of the net from just outside the box. Then two Reds subs combined to double the lead 18 minutes from time when John Martin, whose four goals this season have all come against Sligo, turned brilliantly and surged into the Rovers box before passing to Sean Boyd, who finished well. However, Rovers boss John Russell will feel his side should have taken something from the game. Cian Kavanagh somehow missed from six yards in the ninth minute when set up by McClean's first-time centre. And McClean should have equalised in the 53rd minute when he headed over Owen Elding's cross from inside the six-yard box.
