Jason Ayto, Ross Wilson advance in Newcastle sporting director hiring process
No final decision has been made, but Ayto, the former Arsenal interim sporting director, and Wilson, Nottingham Forest's chief football officer, have advanced through a process which has been expedited due to Paul Mitchell's exit.

Mitchell left the club on Monday after less than a year in the role, while Darren Eales, Newcastle's CEO, is serving his notice after being diagnosed with blood cancer. Newcastle are in the final stages of appointing a new chief executive, with former Real Madrid executive David Hopkinson among the leading contenders.
Before Mitchell departed, interim responsibility for overseeing transfer deals transitioned to Andy Howe — the assistant head of recruitment and the nephew of Eddie Howe, the head coach — and Steve Nickson, the head of recruitment. The pair are working collaboratively to try and sign players from an Eddie Howe-led transfer list of targets, but Newcastle are yet to unveil a senior addition this summer, having missed out on Brighton & Hove Albion's Joao Pedro to Chelsea and with Brentford's Bryan Mbeumo specifying a preference to join Manchester United instead.
With the sporting director having already left and Eales to follow, Newcastle lack a stable senior executive structure and are in a state of flux off the field for a second successive summer.
Amanda Staveley departed as co-owner last July and the appointment of Mitchell followed, which initially unsettled Howe. Whereas Howe was not informed of Mitchell's arrival until 24 hours before, the head coach has been made aware of developments at certain stages of the process this time.
Ideally, Newcastle would prefer to bring in a chief executive before a sporting director but, should they decide upon the right candidate for the latter, those appointments could be reversed.
Ayto and Wilson are certainly prominent among the owners' thoughts, having reached the latter stages.
A former scout, Ayto had been with Arsenal for a decade and rose through the ranks to become assistant sporting director under Edu, leading an overhaul and modernisation of the club's recruitment department. When the Brazilian left Arsenal in November 2024, Ayto stepped up to become interim sporting director until the appointment of Andrea Berta. He left the club voluntarily at the end of last season.

Wilson has worked in senior positions at Southampton, Huddersfield Town, Watford, Falkirk and Rangers, who won their first league title for a decade during his tenure, and reached the Europa League final, before joining Forest in April 2023.
Last year, before Mitchell was appointed, then-Crystal Palace sporting director Dougie Freedman and current Southampton sporting director Johannes Spors reached the final two for the post at Newcastle. Freedman was subsequently offered the job, but turned Newcastle down, eventually leading to Mitchell's arrival.
Newcastle declined to comment on the present ongoing process for hiring a sporting director.

Trent Alexander-Arnold's move to Real Madrid is the most recent of them all and he is widely considered to be a traitor for the way he conducted himself. However, a beneficial La Liga move for one of Liverpool's talents may on the cards to break the cycle. Liverpool set to negotiate with La Liga again The player linked with a potential move is the young Welsh striker Lewis Koumas, who has recently been receiving opportunities in the first-team during domestic cup matches under Arne Slot. As with Jayden Danns in the academy, he's keen to start knocking on the door for regular football. However, with new signing Will Wright having joined the Reds from Salford, the pair's task is not set to get any easier, especially since Hugo Ekitike has signed for £79m and Alexander Isak is favoured. So it is to be expected that his future is going to be assessed this summer and the world is his oyster.

Leoni targeted by Liverpool as interest in young talent grows
Liverpool are the latest club to focus on Parma defender Giovanni Leoni, who has been given a €40m price tag amid Tottenham, Inter and Milan interest. The centre-back is only 18 years old and has just 17 Serie A appearances under his belt, scoring one goal, but already made a big impression. Considered one of the brightest young talents in Italian football, he has been linked with Inter and Milan throughout the summer. They were unprepared to pay the €40m asking price set by Parma, needing first to make sales before raising those kinds of funds for a teenager. According to The Times newspaper, Leoni is one of the young centre-backs that Liverpool are keeping tabs on, along with Crystal Palace player Marc Guehi. He had already been associated with a potential swoop from Premier League side Tottenham Hotspur. A product of the Padova youth academy, Leoni moved to Sampdoria in February 2024 and then was sold to Parma a few months later for €4.8m plus add-ons and a 10 per cent cut of the future transfer fee.

Ollie Watkins: striker makes promising move towards Man United
Currently, Manchester United are locked in a 'big battle' with Newcastle over RB Leipzig striker Benjamin Sesko. Following Newcastle's improved £78 million offer, it has now emerged that United have submitted a bid of their own. According to Fabrizio Romano, INEOS' offer for the striker stands at £73.8 million, add-ons included. Sesko is yet to choose his preferred destination, but the transfer guru suggests United believe he is keen on the move. Who Sesko will choose is what everyone is waiting to see. While there is hope of a move to Old Trafford, his transfer to United remains anything but certain. United would be wise to have a reliable Plan B lined up to nurse a heartbreak should they miss out on the Bundesliga forward. If not Sesko, the feeling is that United will turn to Aston Villa striker Ollie Watkins. Keen on Premier League-proven players, Watkins was packaged as head coach Ruben Amorim's preferred striker target, after missing out on his top choices. The 29-year-old's Premier League experience and proven record in front of goal could yet be just what United crave. But there were obstacles in the chase. Villa were reportedly reluctant to sell, and the figures involved (considering his age) were not encouraging. Those issues saw United shift focus to Sesko, but if they fail to land the 22-year-old, Watkins may still be the fallback. Encouragingly, obstacles appear to be gradually clearing in United's pursuit of Watkins. Watkins and what he thinks of his future at Villa Park The Sun have dropped a report where they claim the Englishman, keen to quit Villa Park and take the next step in his career, 'is ready to step into the void if Man Utd are unable to lure Benjamin Sesko to the club.' The UK outlet goes on to state that 'his wishes may overlap with Aston Villa's, who also face a battle to keep their summer spending within PSR limits.' Villa were not initially keen to sell him, as the report reiterates: 'Unai Emery had been keen to sell the likes of Jacob Ramsey and Leon Bailey to meet the Premier League's requirements, but have yet to receive the interest they had hoped for.' Now, they may be forced to sell, with £40–£50 million reportedly being enough. That is the kind of update Man United would have loved to hear from Villa Park (but Sesko remains the priority) The mere hint that Villa may soften their 'not for sale' stance over Watkins is a boost for United. It should be some comfort that, if generational talent Sesko slips through their fingers, like Liam Delap and Viktor Gyokeres did, there is at least one decent option out there, keen to tell them, 'Sign me.' Either way, all eyes and all focus should be on Sesko. He may yet decide Ollie Watkins' fate. online polls Follow us on Bluesky: @
