Tandy's Wales in-tray as he takes on top job
Backroom boys
One of the the first things Tandy must do is assemble his backroom staff.WRU director of rugby and elite performance Dave Reddin says that will not be solely Tandy's responsibility, and will instead be more a collaborative effort between the two of them.Cardiff boss Matt Sheratt was the interim head coach between Gatland and Tandy.Danny Wilson, Adam Jones, Gethin Jenkins, Rhys Thomas and Leigh Halfpenny were Sherratt's lieutenants in Japan after Gatland's old backroom staff of Jonathan Humphreys, Mike Forshaw, Rob Howley, Alex King and Neil Jenkins were stood down.Sherratt has been identified as a potential attack expert within Tandy's set-up while the WRU was impressed with the other coaches, although the majority of them are contracted to clubs.Wilson and Jones are head coach and scrum coach at Harlequins respectively, Gethin Jenkins is in the Cardiff set-up, while Thomas is involved at Gloucester.Reddin acknowledged there might need to be some interim appointments for the autumn series as the WRU negotiates to get the people it wants. He stressed long-term, though, being involved with the men's set-up was not a part-time position."Working with the Wales national team is a full-time job," said Reddin."No-one is coming here for a rest from club rugby. This is full-on. That's the only way we're going to drive success moving forward."
A testing autumn schedule
Wales have turned to Tandy to arrest a slide that has seen them finish bottom of the last two Six Nations Championships and plummet down the world rankings to 12th.Tandy will face a baptism of fire in his opening campaign, with his first match against Argentina on 9 November and further games against Japan, New Zealand and world champions South Africa. They will be the final matches before the draw for the 2027 World Cup is made in December. Tandy and Wales will know they will at least need to stay in that top 12 of the rankings to ensure a more favourable draw."I don't want to get hung up about results in the autumn, but it's going to be a brilliant benchmark for us as Steve starts his reign," said Reddin."That will give us a clear indication of where we are as we start to plan for the 2027 World Cup and beyond."Tandy will not be weighed down, at least, by Wales' record 18-match losing Test run, which was halted by victory over Japan in Kobe this month.
Collaboration and cooperation
One of the reasons Tandy has been chosen - rather than a proven national head coach with previous experience - is his understanding of the Welsh game.Tandy spent six years with Ospreys before leaving Welsh rugby in 2018 to take roles with the Waratahs, Scotland and the British and Irish Lions. He knows the professional set-up and is expected to have a more unified approach than Gatland."Collaboration is a quality Steve has," said Reddin."That's something we want to embody across the whole system because it should be a fundamental competitive advantage for Wales."Tandy will recognise the domestic situation has deteriorated rapidly since he left. The WRU is considering halving the number of teams in Wales in the men's professional game after admitting the current funding model is unsustainable. The governing body announced in May it would move away from the framework of four evenly-funded clubs after Ospreys and Scarlets did not sign up to its new Professional Rugby Agreement. Now the union has announced it will enter into formal consultation with Wales' four regional clubs and other key stakeholders that will lead to a domestic restructure by the 2027-28 season, with a decision on the plan expected by this October. That could mean fewer teams and job losses, meaning Tandy will have to deal with the uncertainty his players face when he brings them together.
An impossible job?
Scotland head coach Gregor Townsend was disappointed to lose Tandy, whose appointment has split opinion on social media.Views range from people being underwhelmed to others saying he is the right man at the right time.Tandy, 45, knows Welsh rugby always provokes debate and the former no-nonsense flanker will need a thick skin to deal with the role. Some have gone as far as to suggest this is an impossible job. Reddin disagrees."From my perspective, I don't think it's impossible at all," said Reddin."Are Wales going to be consistently ranked as the number one team in the world for the next 10 years? No, I don't think so."But can we be a genuine, top-five nation who are constantly competing for Six Nations titles, capable of mixing it with the best in the world? 100%. Otherwise, I wouldn't be here."Tandy will have to win over the doubters and the only way to do that, in the long-term, will be by delivering results. Given the dire situation Tandy is inheriting, that will be the ultimate test, with former Wales captain Jonathan Davies saying he needs time.Reddin says he hopes to provide Tandy with the tools to succeed."I don't think anybody gets inspired by a team that says, 'well, we're going to rock up and do our best'," said Reddin."Especially a passionate rugby nation like Wales, we've got to be more ambitious than that. Passion on its own is not enough, it's useless."You've got to get all the other bits right as well. If you've got those bits right, the passion can carry you somewhere special."Welsh rugby will hope Tandy will be the man to deliver on such bold sentiments.

Transfer news live: Liverpool formulate £120m Isak bid, Arsenal's Eze deadline, Man United's Sesko plan
Tottenham have advanced talks with Bayern Muninch to bring Joao Palhinha back to the Premier League and give Thomas Frank's side a midfield boost while Arsenal are aiming to bolster their forward line by signing Crystal Palace's Eberechi Eze. Palace want a fee in excess of £60m which is the amount of Eze's release clause but the Gunners are running out of time to trigger it. Manchester United are hopeful of securing a No.9 and are talking with RB Leipzig over a move for Benjamin Sesko. On the sales front, Jadon Sancho could be set to return to Borussia Dortmund and United are in talks with Chelsea and Aston Villa over Alejandro Garnacho. Meanwhile, Liverpool are interested in bringing to the club after he requested to 'explore his options' and have reportedly agreed personal terms with the striker. Newcastle value him at £150m but Liverpool will hope to reduce that if they put in an official bid. Nottingham Forest signs Dan Ndoye Nottingham Forest have signed Dan Ndoye from Bologna in a deal worth £34m. The winger joins on a five-year contract after Forest fought off interest from Napoli for the Swiss international. The 24-year-old scored eight goals and provided four assists in 30 Serie A appearances last season. Mike Jones1 August 2025 07:42 Spurs in advanced talks with Bayern Munich over Joao Palhinha Tottenham are in advanced talks with Bayern Munich over the loan signing of Joao Palhinha says Sky Sports News. Spurs have apparently also negotiated an option to buy in the deal. Should the deal go through Palhinha would return to the Premier League just one year after he joined Bayern from Fulham for a fee worth up to £47.4m. The 30-year-old midfielder made 25 appearances across all competitions for Bayern last season, including 17 outings in the Bundesliga. Mike Jones1 August 2025 07:34 Liverpool 'agree personal terms' deal with Isak The Sun is reporting that Liverpool have reached an agreement with Alexander Isak's team over personal terms for a five-year deal. The Newcastle striker wants to leave the club this summer and is pushing for an exit with the Premier League champions the most likely destination. Isak currently earns around £130,000 per week and a move to Liverpool could see that rise to £300,000 pw. Liverpool have yet to agree a fee with Newcastle but the North East club will demand at least £150m. The Reds believe they could do a deal for £120m instead. Arsenal know Eze release clause deadline This rumour feels very similar to Arsenal's failed pursuit of Benjamin Sesko. The Gunners have a price in mind and will not go past it. What that price is cannot be said but it seems to be lower than the £60m release clause Crystal Palace are waiting to be triggered. The Gunners are in no hurry having already strengthened their forward line with Viktor Gyokeres and Noni Madueke. For his part, Eze is said to be keen on the move and has told his agents, who are in contact with Arsenal, that he is tempted by the opportunity. Arsenal have until August 16 before Eze's release clause expires though it is believed Palace will keep their price the same after that deadline. Man Utd exploring swap deals with Chelsea and Aston Villa for Garnacho Sticking with United, the club have spoken to both Chelsea and Aston Villa about Alejandro Garnacho, as well as the possibility of players such as Nicolas Jackson and Ollie Watkins going the other way. United's PSR pressures are well known, meaning they are investigating deals where players go both ways. The club want an athletic number-six and a goalkeeper, with the potential order of signings dependent on opportunities and sales. Chelsea's interest in Garnacho is long-standing, but there is one main obstacle as regards any potential trade. While the Stamford Bridge hierarchy value Jackson at £80m, they don't want to pay more than £30m for Garnacho. Mike Jones1 August 2025 07:27 Manchester United in talks over Sesko We start at Old Trafford where Manchester United have opened talks with RB Leipzig over a move for 22-year-old Benjamin Sesko. Leipzig have set an asking price of €75m (£64.6m) plus add-ons for Sesko which means it could be an expensive move for United. They'd be taking a gamble on the youngster who only has experience of the Bundesliga and no doubt the club would want to negotiate that fee. Leipzig are in a strong position with Sesko having four years to run on his contract and did not budge in negotiations with Arsenal earlier in the window. United are also interested in Aston Villa's Ollie Watkins but have been told he is not for sale. Mike Jones1 August 2025 07:25

Steven Knight: Birmingham City show ‘would've been a tragedy' before US takeover
Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight has said his new series which follows Birmingham City, the football team he supports, 'would've been a tragedy' if it had been made before the club's US takeover. Prime Video's Built In Birmingham: Brady And The Blues, which Knight is executive producer on, will follow the football club as they are taken over by former NFL quarterback Tom Brady and US businessman Tom Wagner. Advertisement Knight told the PA news agency: 'For most of my supporting Blues career, there's been not a lot to make a film about to be honest. The series will follow Tom Wagner and Tom Brady's takeover of the football club. Photo: Nick Potts/PA. 'It would have been a tragedy or a comedy, or both, previous to this, and then when this thing happened, which most Blues fans still can't quite believe, that we're taken over by proper people with real money, and with ambition, then suddenly there was a story there. 'It's the story that Tom Brady, who would win, and win, and win, takes over a team that loses and draws, and (has) just a completely different culture and ethic. 'It was worth everything just to be there when Tom Brady and Tom Wagner entered a pub called The Roost, which is quite a rough Blues supporters' pub, just before a match and to see the two things come together in a really happy way.' Advertisement The series' first episode shows Brady and Wagner sacking then-manager John Eustace with the club in the Championship play-off places, replacing him with Wayne Rooney, who takes the team into the relegation zone, leading to some tense moments between the former Manchester United striker and Brady. Later in the episode, Rooney is sacked after the seven-time Super Bowl winner questions his work ethic, and the club's relegation to League One, the third tier of English football, is shown. Speaking about the show's tense moments, Knight said: 'Who wouldn't need to learn stuff? They're new to the country, new city. '(There's) fantastic moments in terms of entertainment, but I think Tom Brady would question anybody's work ethic. Advertisement 'It is so phenomenal, he just cannot bear to lose, it's just not an option, and so anyone who isn't doing absolutely everything they can, every hour of the day, to make success happen, is not pulling their weight. So, I did feel a bit for Wayne.' Despite his new series and the success of Disney+'s Welcome To Wrexham, which details the rise of the Welsh football club under celebrity owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, Knight believes the 'scepticism' towards US owners in English football will remain. He added: 'This is football, no-one from another football team is going to go, 'oh, really well done, that's fantastic, really pleased', that isn't ever going to happen. 'We don't expect it to happen and I think the more shrill the backlash, the more proof there is that we're doing something right, because it's worthy of attention. Advertisement 'These are proper business people with real money who want to do this, have said what they're going to do, and they're doing it. 'I think we won't ever win the hearts and minds of other football teams' supporters when they've got their shirts on. 'But I think a documentary can, at least, when someone's at home with the family and they're back to being a normal human being and not a football supporter, they can see the story and understand, and probably reflect that we're all the same. 'We all want the same thing for our club. We're all unreasonable about our club. We all want us to win the Champions League. Otherwise, what's the point?' Advertisement When asked about the upcoming Peaky Blinders film, which is due to be released on Netflix, Knight said he could confirm it would be released 'soon'. He said: 'I can tell you it's fantastic, and that's not just my opinion, but that's also the Netflix opinion, it's really good. I mean, it's brilliant, and we're really proud of it, and it's tested really, really well, and we can't wait for people to see it.' The original BBC series follows Tommy Shelby and his Birmingham gang of the series' name, and has covered topics such as the rise of fascism, Irish republican politics and communist activities through the period following the First World War. The Built In Birmingham: Brady And The Blues series will launch worldwide on Prime Video on Friday.
