All criminal trials in four B.C. courts to be rescheduled during FIFA World Cup
The chief justice of the British Columbia Supreme Court says all criminal trials that were to take place in Vancouver, Abbotsford, Chilliwack and New Westminster during the FIFA World Cup next year will have to be rescheduled.
Chief Justice Ron Skolrood says in a notice posted Monday that the tournament is expected to have 'very significant impacts' on court operations at the affected Supreme Court locations.
The notice says neither jury nor judge-only criminal trials will take place at the four locations from June 12 to July 8, 2026, and that no civil jury trials will take place either.
It says the number of non-jury civil trials may also have to be reduced in the lead up to the tournament. The notice cites the draw on police resources around the Lower Mainland, heavy traffic that will make it difficult for sheriffs to transport suspects, and a potential lack of hotel rooms for jurors and out-of-town witnesses.
Skolrood says the court is committed to having enough capacity for 'urgent matters,' but the service reductions during the tournament are 'unavoidable.'
'The full extent of the impacts is uncertain and will remain so for some time,' the notice says.
'We do know that the effects on the police and sheriff resources required to participate in or support the court's operations will be substantial, particularly in respect of criminal trials and jury trials.'

Ontario Court Justice Heather Perkins-McVey said she found Lich and Barber guilty of mischief because they routinely encouraged people to join or remain at the protest, despite knowing the adverse effects it was having on downtown residents and businesses. Article content Barber also was found guilty of counselling others to disobey a court order for telling people to ignore a judge's injunction directing convoy participants to stop honking their truck horns. Lich was not charged with that offence. Article content King was sentenced in February to three months of house arrest, 100 hours of community service at a food bank or men's shelter and a year of probation. Article content Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre criticized the Crown's sentencing proposals for Lich and Barber. In a social media post Monday, Poilievre compared the sentencing range to sentences for other crimes and asked, 'How is this justice?' Article content While it's quite rare for elected officials to comment directly on a sentencing hearing, Poilievre's message was echoed by several other prominent Conservatives. Sault police seek info on serious crash that injured e-scooter driver
The Sault Ste. Marie Police Service is seeking witnesses or dash cam footage of a serious collision that took place July 18. A motor vehicle and an e-scooter collided around 9:30 p.m. at the intersection of McNabb Street and Great Northern Road. 'The operator of the e-scooter sustained life-threatening physical injuries and was transported to hospital,' police said in a news release Wednesday. 'The driver of the motor vehicle did not sustain physical injuries.' Anyone who witnessed the collision or who has relevant dash cam or surveillance footage is asked to contact Const. North Bay police seek suspect in copper wire theft

Theft in industrial area The incident occurred over the weekend, in a secured outdoor area on Commerce Crescent in one of the city's industrial districts. Authorities say the suspect entered the restricted area and stole an undisclosed amount of copper wire. 'The estimated value of the stolen property has not yet been determined,' said North Bay police spokesperson Jennifer Cross, in an email to 'The matter is currently under active investigation,' said police in a news release.
