#SHOWBIZ: Gaga thrills 2.1 million fans at free beach concert
"I'm so honoured to be here with you tonight. My heart is full. I feel happy, proud and deeply grateful," the 39-year-old American singer said on stage from a mocked-up balcony adorned with a Brazilian flag. "Thank you, Brazil. I love you forever!"
The Rio concert was billed as the biggest of her career. The roughly two-hour performance was part of the "Todo Mundo no Rio" (Everybody in Rio) series, an initiative by the city to bring international stars to the coastal metropolis.
Lady Gaga had previously cancelled a planned appearance at the Rock in Rio music festival in 2017 due to health reasons. She told fans that Brazilians had waited more than a decade since her last performance in the country, and she would give her all on stage.
Fans began arriving at Copacabana as early as the day before to secure the best viewing spots.
Around 4,800 police officers were deployed for the event. According to city officials, the show drew about 500,000 tourists to Rio - more than double the expected number - and is projected to generate 600 million reais (US$106 million/MYR451.3 million) in revenue for the city.

A peaceful Fiordland escape in New Zealand
Passengers taking up paddles in Crooked Arm. — Photos: FLORIAN SANKTJOHANSER/dpa On board a ship in Fiordland National Park, New Zealand, we all rush to the bow for a chance to see the rare Fiordland penguin. The captain manoeuvres the vessel closer to the rocky shore, allowing us to catch a glimpse of the distinctive pale yellow feathers above the penguin's eye before it turns away. We are in the Fiordland National Park, in the far south-west of New Zealand, an area which is known for its challenging weather. It has rainfall 200 days a year, with 7m falling on average. There are also frequent storms in the region often referred to as the Roaring Forties, named after the strong westerly winds that occur in the Southern Hemisphere, generally between the latitudes of 40° and 50° south. Most visitors opt for a brief trip to the renowned Milford Sound, but you can enjoy a far more tranquil experience on a mini-cruise in Doubtful Sound, including a night on board. To reach Doubtful Sound, take a bus to Manapouri, then hop on a boat across the reservoir, grab another bus over a mountain saddle to Deep Cove, and there, the Fiordland Navigator awaits. The three-masted ship is designed to resemble a traditional sloop. As the vessel sets off, passengers are treated to views of the Browne Falls, one of the few permanent waterfalls in the area. Nature guide Divyesh Parmarm says most waterfalls form spontaneously after rain due to the steep rock faces. Hall Arm is considered the most beautiful area in Doubtful Sound. Doubtful Sound, the second largest and deepest of the 12 fjords in New Zealand's South Island, offers a tightly scheduled programme for visitors. Activities include kayaking and dinghy tours, with the sea's dark brown hue attributed to tannins from the trees. The rainforest, untouched by logging, is home to various bird species, including the New Zealand falcon. Parmarm says the trees' shallow roots intertwine for support, but during storms or heavy rain, they can cause tree avalanches. Captain Blake Reid adjusts the ship's route daily according to the weather conditions, seeking sheltered spots within the fjord's three arms. In inclement weather, the Fiordland Navigator can moor in Precipice Cove. Doubtful Sound, known as Patea by the Maori, was named by James Cook in 1770 as he was uncertain about navigating the fjord's winds. Unlike Cook, Reid has motor power to enable him to steer the ship into the Tasman Sea, where passengers can spot fur seals on the Nee Islets. The ship is cosy, with a bar, dining room, lounges, and observation decks. For dinner, there's a buffet with plenty of options to pick from. Parmarm gives us an engaging lecture with videos about the region's dramatic weather and wildlife. Later, we observe the starry sky and morning sunlight on the rock ridges. Our cruise concludes with a visit to the Hall Arm, where the ship's crew start the 'Sound of Silence' ritual, as after all, Doubtful Sound is also known as The Sound of Silence. They turn off the engines and generators and guests are asked to remain silent and still, creating a solemn and almost sacred moment. – FLORIAN SANKTJOHANSER/dpa

'Ketamine Queen' dealer to plead guilty over Matthew Perry death
Jasveen Sangha will admit several charges, including one of distribution of ketamine resulting in death or serious bodily injury in relation to the late star. 19 Aug 2025 08:45am Flowers and a note are placed at the memorial as fans pay tribute to the late actor Matthew Perry outside "Friends" building on October 30, 2023 in New York City. (Photo by John Lamparski / GETTY IMAGES NORTH AMERICA / Getty Images via AFP) LOS ANGELES - A dealer dubbed the "Ketamine Queen" has agreed to plead guilty to supplying the drugs that killed "Friends" actor Matthew Perry, the US Department of Justice said Monday. Jasveen Sangha, 42, will admit several charges, including one of distribution of ketamine resulting in death or serious bodily injury in relation to the late star. A dual citizen of the United States and Britain, she is expected to formally enter her pleas in the coming weeks. She has been in federal custody since August 2024. Sangha will become the fifth person to admit playing a part in the death of the beloved actor, who had openly struggled for decades with substance addiction. Perry, 54, was found dead in the hot tub of his Los Angeles home in October 2023. A criminal investigation was launched soon after an autopsy discovered he had high levels of ketamine -- an anesthetic -- in his system. Last month, Dr Salvador Plasencia pleaded guilty to four counts of distribution of ketamine in the weeks before Perry's death. Another doctor, Mark Chavez, admitted last year to conspiring to distribute ketamine to Perry. Plasencia allegedly bought ketamine off Chavez and sold it to the American-Canadian actor at hugely inflated prices. "I wonder how much this moron will pay," Plasencia wrote in one text message. According to her plea agreement, Sangha worked with a middleman, Erik Fleming, to sell 51 vials of ketamine to Perry's live-in personal assistant, Kenneth Iwamasa. Iwamasa repeatedly injected Perry with the ketamine that Sangha supplied, including on October 28, 2023, when he administered at least three shots of Sangha's ketamine, which killed the actor. The Justice Department said when Sangha heard news reports about Perry's sudden death, she tried to cover her tracks. "Delete all our messages," she instructed Fleming. When investigators raided Sangha's home they found methamphetamine, ketamine, ecstasy, cocaine, and counterfeit Xanax pills, as well as a money counting machine, a scale, and devices to detect wireless signals and hidden cameras, according to the Justice Department. 'Mostly sober' Sangha is expected to plead guilty to one count of maintaining a drug-involved premises, three counts of distribution of ketamine, and one count of distribution of ketamine resulting in death or serious bodily injury. "She's taking responsibility for her actions," her lawyer Mark Geragos told AFP. Sangha could face decades in prison when sentenced. The other people involved in the supply of drugs to Perry are expected to appear in court over the coming months to learn their fates. Perry had been taking ketamine as part of supervised therapy for depression. But prosecutors say that before his death he became addicted to the substance, which also has psychedelic properties and is a popular party drug. "Friends," which followed the lives of six New Yorkers navigating adulthood, dating and careers, drew a massive following and made megastars of previously unknown actors. Perry's role as the sarcastic man-child Chandler brought him fabulous wealth, but hid a dark struggle with addiction to painkillers and alcohol. In 2018, he suffered a drug-related burst colon and underwent multiple surgeries. In his 2022 memoir "Friends, Lovers and the Big Terrible Thing," Perry described going through detox dozens of times. "I have mostly been sober since 2001," he wrote, "save for about sixty or seventy little mishaps." - AFP More Like This
