Egyptian Space Agency unveils ambitious satellite projects, international partnerships
The Egyptian Space Agency (EgSA) is embarking on ambitious new satellite projects and expanding international collaborations, as announced during the agency's 10th Board of Directors meeting chaired by Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly. The Saturday meeting, held at EgSA headquarters in New Cairo, reviewed recent achievements and future plans, focusing on developing local space technology capabilities, fostering African cooperation, and contributing to development-focused space projects.
Among the key projects discussed were the development of a satellite to measure plasma characteristics in the ionosphere and the African Development Satellite project. The latter, part of an Egyptian initiative, involves developing a nanosatellite to monitor climate change impacts in collaboration with several African countries. A partnership with Bahrain to develop a hyperspectral imaging camera for China's Chang'e 7 lunar mission was also highlighted.
Egypt will host the New Space Africa 2025 conference in partnership with the African Space Agency, solidifying its leading role in the African space sector. The conference aims to boost continental cooperation in space and promote joint policies and strategies. EgSA's training programmes for African specialists, with 71 engineers from 34 countries trained since 2021, further demonstrate this commitment.
Prime Minister Madbouly commended EgSA's progress since his last visit, highlighting the agency's vital role in achieving national sustainable development goals through space technology. He emphasised the importance of utilising the agency's applications going forward. Egyptian Space Agency CEO Sherif Sedky provided a comprehensive report on recent achievements, including successful missions like EgyptSat 2 and NexSat 1.
The board addressed international collaborations, including agreements with the Greek and Kenyan space agencies, as well as academic partnerships and collaborations with international companies for technology transfer. A key initiative is the development of an Egyptian microsatellite platform to boost local manufacturing capabilities by 2026.
The meeting concluded with a review of EgSA's pursuit of ISO AS9100 quality certification and the approval of its 2025/2026 budget. These efforts underscore Egypt's dedication to establishing itself as a regional hub for space science and technology innovation. The meeting was attended by Minister of Communications and Information Technology Amr Talaat, Egyptian Space Agency CEO Sherif Sedky, Academy of Scientific Research President Gina El-Feky, and representatives of various ministries and agencies. It followed a tour of the EgSA facilities by the prime minister.

The Minister added that the number of users of the "Digital Egypt" platform has exceeded 8 million citizens, and that half a million young people have been trained in digital skills. He noted that the number of Egyptians working through global freelance platforms has jumped from 50,000 in 2020 to more than half a million in 2024. Egypt's Navy receives first locally built Azimuth tugboat "Ras El-Hekma" from Alexandria Shipyard - Defence
The Egyptian Navy received its first locally built Azimuth Stern Drive (ASD) tugboat, Ras El-Hekma, from Alexandria Shipyard on Thursday, the Egyptian Armed Forces announced. According to the Egyptian army, the tugboat is the first of three being constructed for the Navy under a contract between the Navy and Alexandria Shipyard, in cooperation with the French classification society Bureau Veritas (BV). The Ras El-Hekma tugboat (RASTR 3200 model) is competitive in price and has a powerful 85-ton bollard pull capacity and exceptional manoeuvrability. It is equipped with systems from top global maritime suppliers. This is the first time Egypt's marine industry has produced this model of tugboats. In manufacturing it, Alexandria Shipyard aims to enter the global tugboat market and aspires to become a regional hub for building and exporting this class of tugboats in the coming phase. Vice Admiral Ashraf Atwa, Commander of the Egyptian Navy and Chairman of the Marine Industries and Services Authority, attended the handover ceremony. In addition, Rear Admiral Hossam El-Din Ezzat, Chairman of Alexandria Shipyard, senior Navy officials, BV representatives, and delegates from leading international maritime companies attended the event. Egypt officially launches 5G, marking a leap towards digital transformation
Egypt's Minister of Communications and Information Technology, Amr Talaat, has officially announced the launch of 5G services from the Pyramids area. During the launch ceremony, the minister emphasized Egypt's commitment to adopting global technologies and keeping pace with the latest advancements, noting that it was among the first Arab nations to join the International Telecommunication Union. Talaat highlighted the pivotal role of the communications sector as a bridge for connection and a fundamental pillar for life, work, and development, asserting that technology has become a tangible reality across the globe. Mobile phone subscriptions have reached approximately 120 million, he said, with a 10 percent increase in users within a single year, a rate significantly exceeding the global average of just 2.5 percent. Talaat also noted ongoing cooperation with companies to complete service coverage across all roads and to finalize the 'Decent Life' projects related to technological services. He confirmed that efforts are underway to ensure telecommunications services will cover all parts of Egypt. The minister further noted the substantial growth in freelancing, with the number of Egyptian accounts on freelancing platforms reaching about half a million, a significant jump from just 50,000 previously. This underscores technology's impact in creating new employment opportunities. The CEO of Telecom Egypt, Mohamed Nasr, stated that the company's acquisition of the 5G license is part of investments exceeding LE35 billion this year, aimed at improving infrastructure. This investment will enable consumers to enjoy high-level digital services. These investments are designed to reduce response times, support smart cities, and provide unprecedented communication opportunities, he said. Nasr emphasized that 5G represents a revolution in telecommunications, supporting the build-out of a digital economy that strengthens Egypt's global standing. The CEO of Orange Egypt, Yasser Shaker, affirmed that the gathering of telecommunications companies to launch 5G technology from the Pyramids carries a deep symbolic meaning – signifying that Egypt's progress and development stretch from the era of the Pharaohs to the present day. The CEO of Vodafone Egypt, Mohamed Abdallah, stated that the launch of 5G technology, given Egypt's increasing digital awareness, marks a pivotal economic opportunity that will positively impact all sectors – from health to education. He assured Vodafone's commitment, as a strategic partner to the state, towards providing solutions that align with the needs of Egyptian society, supporting digital transformation, and offering advanced services that will contribute to improving community life. And the CEO of e& Egypt, Hazem Metwally, described the launch as a 'redefinition of technology uses and an opening of unprecedented horizons.' He noted that 5G will enable applications such as augmented reality, the Internet of Things, and Artificial Intelligence, reflecting a natural extension of the state's strategic vision.
