Xabi Alonso: 'We controlled the game well'
Bayer Leverkusen return to winning ways thanks to two first-half goals against Holstein Kiel. In their first-ever Bundesliga trip to Kiel, Die Werkself's boss adds another record to his name as he becomes the first coach to avoid defeat in 28 consecutive away Bundesliga games.
'We have developed a top mentality as you can see from this record. We were efficient and stable. And we want to continue like this,' said Alonso as he mentioned next weekend's trip to third-placed Eintracht Frankfurt.
'We're very happy with today's result. We controlled the game well and dominated it, even though it wasn't easy,' he said before praising the two goal scorers. 'Patrik's first goal was important to win this game. After the last two away draws, today's win was even more important for us.
'Having Amine (Adli) back on the pitch is very important for everyone. His attitude and his qualities are super important for the team as we saw today. We're very happy that he is available to us for the rest of the season.'

Francisco Lindor, Pete Alonso set new Mets duo franchise record
The post Francisco Lindor, Pete Alonso set new Mets duo franchise record appeared first on ClutchPoints. The New York Mets beat the Colorado Rockies 5-3 to sweep the series in Queens. Aside from helping Colorado set some dismal records and handing them their 50th loss, the Amazins made history on Sunday. Francisco Lindor and Pete Alonso both hit home runs for the Mets, marking the 28th time they've both gone yard in a game. Anthony DiComo says that it is the most in franchise history for any duo. Advertisement 'Francisco Lindor and Pete Alonso both homered today, marking the 28th time that duo has gone deep in a game,' DiComo posted. 'It's a new Mets record, per Elias. The old record belonged to Darryl Strawberry and Howard Johnson, who homered in the same game 27 times.' This is the fourth season that Lindor and Alonso have been teammates with the Mets. Aside from a rough 2023, their dominance has led to team success, with two playoff appearances and an NLCS berth in 2024. Strawberry and Johnson were teammates for six seasons in Queens, from Johnson's arrival in 1985 to Strawberry's departure in 1990. Juan Soto also hit a homer for the Mets on Sunday, his tenth of the season. While this may be the only season of this three-headed monster, they can make some Mets history while they're together. The Rockies are the perfect opponent to make some history against, as they have reached 50 losses before cracking ten wins. Despite some rough spots along the way, the Mets are flying in a difficult National League. Their 37-22 record is tied for the best in the National League and the best in the East. Lindor and Alonso will keep carrying them offensively as they have for the past four seasons. And when Soto finds his stride, the Mets will be difficult to beat. The Mets' schedule toughens up with a trip to LA to face the Dodgers this week.

Soto, Alonso and McNeil rally Mets past Nationals 5-4 in 10 innings
NEW YORK (AP) — Jeff McNeil doubled home the winning run in the 10th inning and the New York Mets rallied past the Washington Nationals 5-4 on Tuesday night in the opener of a three-game series between NL East foes. Juan Soto hit a solo homer and an RBI double for the Mets against his original team. He also threw out a runner at home plate from right field. Pete Alonso delivered a tying single in the eighth after Soto's two-out double trimmed it to 4-3. New York (43-24), which has the best record in the National League, has won four straight and 13 of 16 to move 19 games over .500 for the first time since finishing 101-61 in 2022. CJ Abrams homered, doubled twice and drove in two runs for the Nationals. Nathaniel Lowe launched a two-run homer off Griffin Canning in the first, and MacKenzie Gore pitched six steady innings in his latest terrific performance. The left-hander had six strikeouts, taking over the major league lead with 114, and walked none. Washington pitchers retired 12 straight batters before Starling Marte drew a two-out walk from Jose A. Ferrer in the eighth. Soto laced an RBI double that eluded diving right fielder Robert Hassell III for New York's first hit since the fourth, and closer Kyle Finnegan was summoned to face the red-hot Alonso. He lined a single off the left-field wall that tied it 4, but was thrown out at second trying for a double. Reed Garrett (2-2) pitched a perfect inning before McNeil lined the first pitch from Cole Henry (0-1) into right field to score pinch-runner Luisangel Acuña, the automatic runner placed at second base. Key moment Soto homered to left-center in the third. He said something after connecting and then stared down Gore a couple of times as he rounded the bases. The two were traded for each other as part of a 2022 blockbuster that also sent Abrams, Hassell and James Wood from San Diego to Washington. Key stats Alonso has 19 RBIs in his last nine games. ... Gore has permitted just three runs and four walks in 25 innings over his past four starts, leaving him with a 2.88 ERA this season. Up next Nationals RHP Jake Irvin (5-2, 4.02 ERA) faces LHP David Peterson (4-2, 2.80 ERA) in the middle game of the series Wednesday night. ___ AP MLB:
