ISKANDAR PUTERI: Police arrested a man within just three hours after he allegedly attempted to rob two Chinese nationals at their home in Gelang Patah here.
Iskandar Puteri OCPD Asst Comm M. Kumarasan said police received a report from a 14-year-old victim at around 1.34pm on Sunday (June 1) regarding the attempted robbery.
'The victim, together with her grandmother, who is in her 70s, was at home when the suspect entered the house at around 11.30am and tried to rob them,' he said on Monday (June 2).
ACP Kumarasan added that the suspect demanded valuables from the girl and proceeded to choke her, prompting a struggle between him and both victims.
'The commotion forced the suspect to flee the scene. Unfortunately, both victims sustained injuries during the incident and were later referred to the hospital for medical treatment,' he said.
Based on public information, police arrested a 33-year-old local man on the same day at around 2.30pm.
Following the arrest, police also recovered clothing believed to have been worn during the incident, including a T-shirt and a pair of shorts.

Pasar malam trader jailed 30 months for stealing lawnmower from former MB's home

ALOR STAR: A pasar malam trader was sentenced to 30 months in jail and fined RM1,500 for breaking into the home of former Kedah Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Ahmad Bashah Md Hanipah and stealing a lawnmower last Thursday. T. Rakesh Kumar pleaded guilty when the charge was read before Magistrate Nur Syifa Mohd Hamzah at the Magistrate's Court here today. He faces an additional six months in prison if he fails to pay the fine. According to the charge sheet, Rakesh broke into the residence, located in Taman Rakyat here, at 2.50am on May 29 and stole a lawnmower belonging to Ahmad Bashah. He was charged under Section 457 of the Penal Code, which provides for a jail term of up to 14 years and, for repeat offenders, a fine or whipping. Deputy public prosecutor Nur Sharmila Md Asri urged the court to impose a commensurate sentence along with a whipping, citing the accused's previous criminal record. In mitigation, Rakesh's counsel, Aina Shafina Idrus Saidi, appealed for leniency, stating that Rakesh is the sole caretaker of his wife and his elderly, ailing parents. The court ordered the sentence to run from the date of his arrest.

Man suspected of wife's murder wails, recites prayers in lockup

TANGKAK: A man suspected of brutally slashing his wife to death was seen crying uncontrollably and chanting religious verses while being held in the magistrate's court lockup this morning. The 33-year-old suspect, who is under investigation for murder, began shouting "Allahu Akbar" and repeatedly reciting the zikir as he awaited his remand proceedings at 8.30am. Court staff said he had appeared calm at first, but soon broke into loud wailing, reciting the takbir for nearly a minute inside the holding area. The suspect is accused of using a vegetable knife to slash his wife at their home in Taman Cahaya, Bukit Gambar, late Monday afternoon. He allegedly wrapped the woman's body in a blanket and left the crime scene. The next morning, he reportedly went to his mother-in-law's house and attempted to set fire to a vehicle and parts of the home. A source said the suspect later contacted his brother-in-law to ask for a ride to the nearest police station, where he allegedly confessed to the killing and led officers back to the house to show them the body. "The couple had been married for three years but had no children. "Their neighbours were not aware of the incident until police arrived," the source said. Investigations revealed that a heated argument had preceded the incident. The man had reportedly exhibited increasingly erratic behaviour in recent months, frequently quarrelling with the victim despite their previously cordial relationship. "The wife worked as a clerk at a factory, while the suspect was unemployed," the source added. The magistrate's court granted a seven-day remand order beginning today. The case is being investigated under Section 302 of the Penal Code for murder, as well as Section 435 for mischief by fire with intent to cause damage.

Man remanded seven days over wife's murder, car arson

TANGKAK: An unemployed man who allegedly killed his wife by slashing her with a vegetable knife before setting a car ablaze has been remanded for seven days. The 33-year-old suspect was brought before Magistrate Lee Kim Keat at the district magistrate's court this morning, where a remand order was granted to facilitate investigations under Sections 302 (murder) and 435 (mischief by fire) of the Penal Code. Dressed in a purple lock-up uniform, the suspect arrived at court under heavy police escort at 8.20am. After proceedings, he was seen smiling as he was escorted into a police truck to be taken to the Tangkak district police headquarters for temporary detention. The brutal incident is believed to have occurred between 4.15pm and 4.30pm in a residential area in Taman Cahaya, Bukit Gambir, where the suspect allegedly fatally slashed his 34-year-old wife, who worked as a clerk. Following the alleged murder, he is believed to have fled to his in-laws' house in Kampung Durian Chondong, where he allegedly set fire to a vehicle. Family members are said to have witnessed the act, prompting the suspect to flee again, this time returning to his own residence. Police arrested the suspect at his home at 7am yesterday.
