MILLIONS of older iPhones are set to be locked out of Apple's next big update.
Apple fans across the world are due to get the free iOS 26 upgrade later this year, giving their iPhones bonus features at no extra cost.

That'll include a robot that holds on phone calls so you don't have to, the ability to send polls in Messages, a translation feature that lets you understand foreign languages in real time – plus a brand new "glassy" look for your iPhone icons and menus.
These tempting perks were announced during today's special Worldwide Developer Conference (WWDC) event at Apple's California HQ.
It's coming to dozens of iPhone models going back years – but not all Apple customers are on the lucky list.
Several once-posh iPhone models are being cut-off, despite being able to get last year's iOS 18 update.
Phones as far back as the iPhone 11 and iPhone SE (2nd gen) will be able to get iOS 26.
But if you've got an iPhone XR, iPhone XS, or iPhone XS Max, you're out in the cold.
Anything older than that won't be eligible for the upgrade either – but that's no surprise, as they would've missed iOS 18 too.

It lets you create custom Genmoji emoji, can help you rewrite emails, and lets you use Siri to tap into ChatGPT.
WHAT'S NEW IN IOS 26?
For a start, it's called iOS 26 and not iOS 19 as expected.
That means Apple is matching the main year for the software, making naming simpler. This is true for iPad, Mac, Apple Watch, Apple TV, and Apple Vision Pro software too.

There's a new look for apps with glassy, translucent, round-edged icons and circular buttons, and a transparent design borrowed from the Apple Vision Pro headset.
The Phone app has been upgraded to streaming your Favourites, Recents, and Voicemails into a single panel.
Safari has a glossy new design, and the Camera app has been simplified.
Messages now allows you to send polls, and set synced backgrounds for your chats.

US State Department cable says agency using AI to help staff job panels
WASHINGTON, June 9 (Reuters) - The U.S. State Department will use an artificial intelligence chatbot to help it select the people who will perform annual reviews of promotions and moves, according to a cable issued Monday and reviewed by Reuters. The cable said that StateChat, an in-house chatbot which works using technology from Palantir and Microsoft, will be employed to pick foreign service officers for participation on the Foreign Service Selection Boards, the annual evaluation panels which decide whether and how to promote and shuffle around State Department employees. In a statement, a department spokesperson said the evaluations themselves "will not be done by AI." The boards, whose role is governed by the 1980 Foreign Service Act, play a critical role in the State Department's personnel promotion decisions, managing the annual process by which diplomats and others jump from one professional grade to the next. By statute, the boards are meant to include "a substantial number of women and members of minority groups." The State Department has been using StateChat since last year to transcribe notes, draft emails, and analyze diplomatic cables. Last week the agency's acting chief data and AI officer, Amy Ritualo, told a Palantir conference, opens new tab that StateChat had about 40,000 users across her agency. The program's role in the human resources process, however, has not previously been disclosed. Last month the State Department abruptly postponed the boards, and previously selected members received emails saying their services were no longer required. Monday's cable said that StateChat's technology would instead be used to "perform unbiased selection" for the boards based on employees' internally adjudicated skill codes and grades. That list would then be screened - for example for disciplinary and security issues - before being used to create the panels. There was no mention of female or minority representation. President Donald Trump's administration has repeatedly attacked what Republicans refer to as "DEI," a catch-all term covering work protecting civil rights, fighting discrimination, and boosting diversity. The American Foreign Service Association, which represents State Department employees, did not directly comment on the use of AI but said it was seeking clarification from agency leadership about how it intends to comply with its legal obligations around women and minority group representation. Palantir and Microsoft didn't immediately return messages. Although the deployment of AI by officials precedes Trump's reelection in 2024, his administration has aggressively expanded its use since his return to power. Last month Reuters reported that tech tycoon Elon Musk's U.S. DOGE Service was expanding its use of the AI chatbot Grok across the U.S. federal government. In April, Reuters reported that Trump administration officials had told some U.S. government employees that DOGE was using AI to monitor at least one federal agency's communications for hostility to the president.

The Nintendo Switch 2 has finally launched, and while some people managed to snag one on launch day across the country at Best Buy and GameStop, many are still on the hunt. Consoles at Walmart and Target have been flickering in and out of stock online, so your best bet is to keep checking. Meanwhile, Costco members can still order online, with delivery expected by 12 June, but availability is likely to change quickly. Best Buy and GameStop are sticking to in-store sales for now, so it's worth calling ahead before making the trip. Stock varies widely by location. If selected, you'll receive a notification with a purchase window. Invites are still being sent out, but they've been sporadic. AI takes backseat as Apple unveils software revamp and new apps
Apple's artificial intelligence features took a backseat on Monday at its latest annual Worldwide Developers Conference. The company announced a revamped software design called Liquid Glass, new phone and camera apps as well as new features on Apple Watch and Vision Pro. But in spite of pressure to compete with firms that have gone all-in on AI, Apple's AI announcements were limited to incremental features and upgrades. Users will have a few new Apple Intelligence-powered features to look forward to including live translation, a real-time language translation feature that will be integrated into messages, FaceTime and the Phone app. The Android operating system has offered a similar feature for several years. Apple also introduced a new fitness app called Workout Buddy, which uses an AI-generated voice to speak to you during your workouts. Consumers might soon notice some AI improvements to the non-Apple apps on their phone as well. The company said it was enabling app developers to tap into Apple's on-device large language model to improve their experience with AI features within third-party apps. Consumers will be able to choose whether they want their data or information shared off-device and with the developers. At last year's WWDC, Apple announced a suite of AI upgrades to Siri that were intended to make the virtual assistant more personable and dynamic. Many of those features have yet to be released in spite of specific commitments from Apple. 'This work needed more time to reach our high-quality bar,' Craig Federighi, Apple's vice president of software engineering, previously said of the delay. The silence on Siri was 'deafening', wrote Forrester's VP principal analyst Dipanjan Chatterjee. 'The topic was swiftly brushed aside to some indeterminate time next year. Apple continues to tweak its Apple Intelligence features, but no amount of text corrections or cute emojis can fill the yawning void of an intuitive, interactive AI experience,' Chatterjee wrote. 'The end of the Siri runway is coming up fast, and Apple needs to lift off.' Apple also announced a partnership with ChatGPT, a play to help the iPhone-maker catch up OpenAI, Microsoft and Google in the AI race. Wedbush Securities analyst Dan Ives said he expects Apple may need to forge more relationships with outside players to catch up with its competitors. 'Overall, WWDC laid out the vision for developers but was void of any major Apple Intelligence progress as Cupertino is playing it safe and close to the vest after the missteps last year,' Ives said.
