Popular Water Recalled Over Bacterial Contamination Concerns
Mineral water sold at Costco was voluntarily recalled by Coca-Cola over contamination concerns.
Affected bottles may be contaminated with bacteria called Pseudomonas.
Below, find a list of impacted lots.
Before you crack open a bubbly Topo Chico to beat the heat, check the bottle. Costco recently informed members that bulk cases of the mineral water sold in its warehouses in two states are being voluntarily recalled due to potential contamination with Pseudomonas, a group of bacteria commonly found in soil and water.
Keep reading for all the recall details, including exactly which Topo Chico products are affected and what to do if you purchased them.
The potentially contaminated Topo Chico Mineral Waters (item number 1439351) were sold in 18-packs of 16.9-ounce glass bottles in select Costco stores in Texas and Louisiana from May 20 to May 29, 2025, a notice to Costco customers said. Impacted product can be identified by the lot code 13A2541, which is printed on both the bottles' cardboard cases and their necks. The beverages were voluntarily recalled by Coca-Cola, their manufacturer. If you have recalled product, do not drink it.
Pseudomonas poses a low health risk to people with strong immune systems. People most at risk for health consequences are those with low immunity and those who are hospitalized or use medical devices, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Most types of the bacteria are highly resistant to antibiotics, and the most common type to cause infections among humans is Pseudomonas aeruginosa, the CDC says. Infections can occur throughout the body—in the blood, lungs, urinary tract, digestive tract, and more—depending on physical exposure, and symptoms vary depending on the infection location, but may include fever, pain, inflammation, discharge from the affected area, itchiness, discomfort, and more, according to the Cleveland Clinic. If you have a weakened immune system and become infected, you can grow sick very quickly. Otherwise, minor cases usually clear up within a few days with proper treatment.
The notice from Costco told customers to return the recalled product to their local Costco for a full refund. If you have questions or concerns regarding the recall, you can direct them to Coca-Cola at 1-800-438-2653. 'The safety and quality of the products we offer our consumers is our top priority,' the statement from Costco reads.
If you or someone in your household becomes ill after being exposed to a recalled product, contact a medical provider immediately.

After Chapter 11 bankruptcy, fast-food chain faces liquidation
Chicken has become a major battleground in the fast food space. You have your dedicated chicken chains like KFC and Chick-fil-A, and there's also Popeye's, Zaxby's, Raising Cane's, and countless others devoted specifically to selling chicken. You also have McDonald's Burger King, and Wendy's, which have all made chicken, a major part of the menu. Related: Popular Latin American chain files bankruptcy, closes restaurants That makes it incredibly hard to break into the space. Maybe you can offer a better product but does that difference matter when so many other chains, with so many locations are your competition? In some ways, fried chicken has become like craft beer. There are a lot of people who are very passionate about it that want to enter the space, but it's nearly impossible to differentiate yourself. Trying to market your chicken chain as superior to others seems like a really challenging idea, That's exactly what Sticky's has tried to do boldly using the marketing line "the best damn chicken finger you have ever tasted." Don't miss the move: Subscribe to TheStreet's free daily newsletter The company tried to justify that boast on its website. "Sticky's was created out of a love for chicken fingers and the desire to think outside of the box. Our founders realized that there were a lot of New Yorkers who really loved chicken fingers but didn't have a great place to get them; and thus, Sticky's was born! Our mission is to create the best damn experience through the comfort of chicken fingers in a fun, inclusive space," it shared. Image source: Getty Images While it opened with noble intentions (or at least lofty goals), Sticky's was not able to deliver. The chain has been in Chapter 11 bankruptcy for almost a year. During its period of court protection, the company closed three locations and a ghost kitchen. At the time of its filing with U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the District of Delaware, the company reported $500,000-$1 million in assets and $1 to $10 million in liabilities, with the largest creditor being distributor U.S. Foods. It seemed in late-April that the chain had found a lifeline. That court order is now under scrutiny which could lead to the company being liquidated. Harker Palmer Investors LLC tried to defend its offer in a June 3 court filing in the US Bankruptcy Court for the District of Delaware. The company sought to answer an objection from a Justice Department bankruptcy watchdog objection to the $2 million deal. It argued that the US Trustee's legal arguments are "unsupported" and that no creditors - including landlords and supplier US Foods - oppose the revised proposa," Bloomberg Law first reported. If the offer is not approved, Harker Palmer's lawyers argued, the fried chicken chain will have to be liquidated. "If the Modified Plan is not confirmed, conversion to Chapter 7 will follow resulting in no recovery to any creditors," the firm said in the filing. Chapter 7 would involve a trustee-supervised liquidation process. Costco CEO hints at major change members will love
Plenty of retailers claim to care about customers. But Costco actually proves it. Unlike other retailers, membership fees are a big part of Costco's revenue. For this reason, the company goes out of its way to continuously examine and enhance the member experience. Don't miss the move: Subscribe to TheStreet's free daily newsletter Costco's return policy, for example, is one of the most generous in all of retail. With few exceptions, customers can bring back any item at any time for a refund, even if it's been months since the date of purchase. Related: Costco quietly drops popular product, saddens fans Costco also strives to offer members the lowest prices possible. To that end, the company is very particular about what it puts on its shelves. If Costco can't source an item at a price it's happy with, the company will either pass or create its own low-cost version under the Kirkland label. Costco's free samples are another example of going above and beyond for customers. Granted, part of the goal is to tempt customers to buy more products by letting them try things for free. But it's still a nice perk you don't tend to see at other stores. One of the biggest benefits of joining Costco is getting to save money on gas. Costco is known for having some of the best gas prices in town. And Costco's gas is not only affordable, but also high in quality. Related: Costco brings back food court favorite, but members aren't happy The Kirkland Signature Gasoline sold at Costco fuel stations has the TOP TIER designation. This means it's formulated to keep engines clean and lead to better performance. Earlier this year, Costco made the decision to extend its gas station hours. Now, most Costco fuel stations are open from: 6 a.m to 10 p.m. Monday through Friday6 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. on Saturdays6 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. on Sundays These hours go well beyond normal warehouse club hours so that members can fill up their cars early in the day or later at night. Not surprisingly, during the company's most recent earnings call, Costco reported that members started buying more gas once fuel stations began opening earlier and closing later. While Costco has a clear plan in place to both retain and attract members, the company is constantly reevaluating its strategy. And during the company's most recent earnings call, CEO Ron Vachris said that given the great results that came from extending gas station hours, the management team would consider expanding warehouse club hours overall. "We continue to look at the hours as well," he said. Vachris and other Costco executives know that now more than ever, consumers need access to savings at every turn. Related: Costco makes key moves to protect prices from tariffs The combination of lingering inflation and tariff threats has a lot of people on edge, and they're looking for ways to stretch their paychecks as much as possible. To that end, Costco has pledged to do what it can to shield members from tariffs. During the third quarter of the year, Vachris said that Costco "rerouted many goods sourced from countries with large tariff exposure to our non-U.S. markets." But extending warehouse club hours is another way to not only enhance the member experience, but also make it easier for members to access affordable products they need. Although Costco warehouse club stores tend to be open pretty late during the week, many locations don't open until 9:30 a.m. or 10 a.m. on weekdays. These hours may be suitable for people who are home during the day, but they're not particularly worker-friendly. Palantir's Collection of Disease Data at C.D.C. Stirs Privacy Concerns
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's plans to consolidate data on diseases like measles and polio are raising concerns about patient privacy, delays in spotting long-term trends and ways the Trump administration may use the information. The agency told state officials earlier this week that it would shift disease information to a new system managed by Palantir, the data analysis and technology firm co-founded by Peter Thiel. The change is not entirely unexpected. The Covid pandemic revealed that the C.D.C.'s data systems were antiquated, hobbling the country's response in the crucial early months. A plan to modernize and consolidate the agency's data systems began during the Biden administration. But news that the Trump administration has expanded Palantir's work across the federal government in recent months, allowing it to compile detailed information about Americans, has introduced a new layer of anxiety and mistrust among state and local officials about sharing data with the C.D.C. Palantir's systems, including those at the C.D.C., rely on a platform called Foundry that could merge information from different agencies. The Department of Health and Human Services, the Food and Drug Administration and the National Institutes of Health all use Foundry. Some officials worry that a sprawling data collection system could expose or endanger people with sensitive health needs, like gender care, reproductive health care or disabilities. Some labor and other advocacy groups have tried to block the Trump administration from sharing data across agencies. Want all of The Times? Subscribe.
