Top Allrounder Hayley Matthews To Miss Women's Big Bash League
Melbourne Renegades' Hayley Matthews will miss WBBL season 11 due to a shoulder injury as she is set to undergo surgery.
Melbourne Renegades allrounder Hayley Matthews will miss the Women's Big Bash League season 11 due to a shoulder injury, the club announced on Thursday.
Matthews, pre-signed by the Renegades ahead of the WBBL Overseas Player Draft, was set for her fourth season in red. However, a shoulder injury sustained during the West Indies' recent ODI series has postponed her WBBL plans.
The world's top-ranked T20I all-rounder must withdraw to undergo shoulder surgery. Despite this, she will meet her national commitments, including captaining the West Indies and playing for her Barbados Royals in the Caribbean Premier League, before her surgery later this year.
Matthews would have occupied one of the Renegades' picks at Thursday's Big Bash drafts. However, the club now has all three overseas slots to fill during the event.
'We are clearly disappointed Hayley won't be with us this season. She's been instrumental during her time with the Renegades, not just with her performances but with her leadership and professionalism," General Manager James Rosengarten said.
'There's a very close relationship between the Renegades and Hayley, and we know it will continue next year and beyond. Hayley loves this club, and we share in her disappointment at not being available for this year's tournament."
Matthews' absence is a blow for the club, given her significant role in the Renegades' remarkable resurgence last season. The team recovered from a bottom-placed finish in WBBL 9 to win their maiden title at the MCG.
She had a career-best campaign in WBBL 10, scoring 324 runs at a strike rate of 130.6 and taking 14 wickets, earning her a spot in the WBBL 10 Team of the Tournament.

Heather Knight, Sarah Glenn Included In England's Squad For Women's ODI World Cup
Heather Knight, Sarah Glenn and Danni Wyatt-Hodge have been included in England's 15-member squad for the upcoming Women's ODI World Cup, to be held in India and Sri Lanka from September 30 to November 2. Heather, the side's former captain, had been in a race against time to be fit for the World Cup after suffering a significant tendon injury in her right hamstring during her match-winning knock of 66 not out in the third T20I against West Indies in May. But Heather has now made it to the World Cup squad led by Nat Sciver-Brunt, as she continues her comeback from injury. Meanwhile, Sarah and Danni make a return to England's ODI squad after having missed out on the 50-over series against India, which the hosts lost 2-1. Leg-spinner Sarah is one of four specialist spinners alongside Sophie Ecclestone, Charlie Dean and Linsey Smith. She is also one of six players embarking on playing their first ODI World Cup for England. 'Conditions mean we have gone for the extra spinner and we're lucky to be able to have such depth in this department, it's fantastic to welcome Sarah Glenn back. That does mean there's no room for Kate Cross, Maia Bouchier or Alice Davidson-Richards, which will be disappointing for them.' 'It's also great to have Danni back in the squad, she's been in good form in domestic cricket and she'll bring dynamism and depth to our batting, alongside Heather, who we are absolutely delighted to be able to select. She'll be a huge asset for us,' said head coach Charlotte Edwards in a statement. England, who have won the Women's ODI World Cup four times, will open their 2025 tournament campaign against South Africa on October 3, before taking on Bangladesh and Sri Lanka in Guwahati. After taking on Pakistan in Colombo, England will face India and Australia in Indore, before moving to Guwahati to take on New Zealand. The semifinals are scheduled for October 29 and 30, before the final takes place on November 2. 'Being selected to play for your country in a World Cup is one of the biggest honours in sport and I'm delighted for all the players named in the squad.' 'Like all global tournaments, it will be a huge challenge but we want to go as far as we possibly can in India and Sri Lanka and I believe that if we play our best cricket we can compete with anyone.' 'India and Sri Lanka are amazing places to play cricket, and as a group we have a huge opportunity to go and do something special. ODI World Cups are the pinnacle of our sport. They only come around every four years and we're so excited to get over there to start our preparation,' added Charlotte. England squad for Women's ODI World Cup: Em Arlott, Tammy Beaumont, Lauren Bell, Alice Capsey, Charlie Dean, Sophia Dunkley, Sophie Ecclestone, Lauren Filer, Sarah Glenn, Amy Jones, Heather Knight, Emma Lamb, Nat Sciver-Brunt, Linsey Smith and Danni Wyatt-Hodge.

England announce Women's World Cup squad; Heather Knight makes return
Former captain Heather Knight was on Thursday named in a 15-member England squad for the upcoming ICC Women's World Cup and the duo of Sarah Glenn and Danni Wyatt-Hodge also returned to the side after missing the recent series against India. Knight returns to the squad after having been on the sidelines for the last few months due to a tendon injury in her right hamstring. A press release issued by the England and Wales Cricket Board (RCB) said Knight has been named in the squad as she continues her comeback from injury and is hopeful of being fit in time for the tournament, which will be held from September 30 to November 2. Glenn is one of four specialist spinners in the squad and one of six players embarking on their maiden ODI World Cup, which will also be Nat Sciver-Brunt's first as captain in an ICC event. World No.1 ranked ODI batter Sciver-Brunt was appointed as the all-format skipper in April. Wyatt-Hodge also returns, having last featured for England in the 50-over format during their Ashes defeat in Australia, but Kate Cross, Maia Bouchier and Alice Davidson-Richards have been left out. The tournament is the country's first World Cup under new captain Sciver-Brunt and head coach Charlotte Edwards, with Australia returning as defending champions after they beat England in the 2022 final. "Being selected to play for your country in a World Cup is one of the biggest honours in sport and I'm delighted for all the players named in the squad," said Edwards. "Like all global tournaments, it will be a huge challenge but we want to go as far as we possibly can in India and I believe that if we play our best cricket we can compete with anyone. "Conditions mean we have gone for the extra spinner and we're lucky to be able to have such depth in this department, it's fantastic to welcome Sarah Glenn back. That does mean there's no room for Kate Cross, Maia Bouchier or Alice Davidson-Richards, which will be disappointing for them." The England coach added, "It's also great to have Danni back in the squad, she's been in good form in domestic cricket and she'll bring dynamism and depth to our batting, alongside Heather, who we are absolutely delighted to be able to select. She'll be a huge asset for us." Squad: Nat Sciver-Brunt (capt), Em Arlott, Tammy Beaumont, Lauren Bell, Alice Capsey, Charlie Dean, Sophia Dunkley, Sophie Ecclestone, Lauren Filer, Sarah Glenn, Amy Jones, Heather Knight, Emma Lamb, Linsey Smith, Danni Wyatt-Hodge.

Ignored For Asia Cup 2025, Star Pakistan Batter Joins New Team
Last Updated: The 33-year-old wicketkeeper-batter, who has 3414 runs to his name in T20Is, will play for the St Kitts and Nevis Patriots in the 2025 edition of the Caribbean Premier League. Star Pakistani wicketkeeper-batter Mohammad Rizwan was not picked in the Asia Cup 2025 squad. The 33-year-old right-handed batter, who has 3414 runs to his name in 106 T20Is played so far for Men in Green, was ignored for the premier continental event starting September 9 in Abu Dhabi, along with former all-format captain Babar Azam, pacer Naseem Shah and star spin bowling all-rounder Shadab Khan. The snub of Rizwan, who last played a shortest-format match for the Pakistani team in December last year, came as a surprise for many cricket fans and experts in Pakistan. But after getting ignored for the premier continental event, Rizwan joined a new team on Wednesday (August 20). He will play for the St Kitts and Nevis Patriots in the ongoing season of the Caribbean Premier League. Rizwan joined the franchise as a replacement for Afghanistan fast bowler Fazalhaq Farooqi. Farooqi will leave the CPL midway to join the Afghanistan squad for the T20I tri-series involving Pakistan and the UAE. It is the first time in his career that Rizwan will take part in the CPL. Apart from Rizwan, leg spinner Usama Mir is also playing in the CPL 2025. He was signed by Antigua and Barbuda Falcons on Thursday, whereas fast bowlers Naseem Shah and Abbas Afridi are already playing for St Kitts and Nevis Patriots. Former Pakistani all-rounder Imad Wasim, fast bowler Mohammad Amir and Salman Irshad are also playing in the CPL this year. Rizwan last played for PAK in ODIs Rizwan last played a competitive match (ODI) for Pakistan on August 12, 2025, in Tarouba against the West Indies. In that fixture, he came out to bat at No. 4 for the Pakistani team in the 295-run chase but got clean bowled for a golden duck by fast bowler Jayden Seales. In the three-match ODI series against the West Indies, Rizwan was only able to score a total of 69 runs, and under his leadership, Pakistan, for the first time in 34 years, lost a bilateral ODI series against the Men in Maroon. view comments First Published: August 21, 2025, 17:10 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
